Kakukaku Shikajika Kakukaku Shikajika is a autobiography of Akiko Higashimura’s (mangaka of Princess Jellyfish) early years focusing on an important teacher in her life. It starts out in Higahimura’s final year of high school. Where all she wants to do in life is become a mangaka. Her art club friend suggests she start taking extra art classes with her. Higahimura is in for a big shock though when the sensei is a very blunt old man wielding a bokken. At first she is terrified at they are at odds but she grows closed to Hidaka sensei. Who helps her immensely with her art. But things start to go awry when Higashimura goes off to college and ends up spending more time goofing off than doing her school work… If you like Bakuman. and like something of a personal journey, I really recommend Kakukaku Shikajika, it doesn’t go quite into the details like Bakuman. but does give a good perspective of the kind of work that goes into becoming a mangaka. It is also a really great personal story about how sometimes we ignore the important people in our lives and maybe miss out on last chances.
