When people don't know what the word means they just assume the other person doesn't know what it means either because it's being used on something bad that they like.

Let's consult google, an incredibly accurate source :P

"at the forefront of a trend; experimental or avant-garde."

THis is kind of vague, because it doesn't give us the purpose of edginess, but I guess that's why we end up with all this ambiguity.

If we apply MAL's common definition we get "being at the forefront of a trend for the sake of being at the forefront of a trend"

so pushing the boundaries of what people are comfortable with just to do it. This could apply to anything with unnecessary gore or fan-service but also any other trend, be it heavy dialogue or a show consisting solely of action sequences. This is not a bad thing in and of itself and doesn't seem to be mutually exclusive with maturity.

AoT and Deadman wonderland could both be described as such with gore that has no other purpose than to gross you out, or make the violence feel more intense. In the case of AoT it's relevant because giant naked people trying to kill small clothed people with their bear hands will yield quite a bit of gore, but it's still a bit excessive. I guess edginess isn't very well defined.

Using buzzwords to describe things isn't very useful anyway.

Btw, I don't know what relation have the words "edgy" and "mature". Wouldn't be dark the better word? Because something mature doesn't have to be bloody.

The difference between edgy and mature is the difference between trying and doing.

"Mature doesn't mean gore and sex". MAL replying to something no one has ever said.

Anyway, there's no difference. 'Edgy' is just a word used to condescendingly mock, looking at recent examples, shounen shows that have gore. There's talk about themes or whatever to try to hide how shallow this whole thing is.
