Maybe it's because most Japanese girls aren't that busty?
Personally as an ecchi lover I love all boobies, from the Levy McGardens to the Lady Js. After all a great man once said, "when your grabbing boobs, your grabbing life!"

I wonder what percent of guys are into this. I know I'm not. A naturally large bust is fine, but a lot of female anime characters have impractically large boobs, or look like they have implants.

Valid point. But on the other side of the spectrum there's a big loli market. It's often one extreme or the other. The middle ground is rarely covered when targeting the male audience.

That's what I'm wondering. I'm hoping the resident psychologists here can help explain it.
Why do the girls in Ore Twintails have twintails? Why do the girls in Miniskirt Pirates wear miniskirts? Ecchi defines the target audience and gives them what they want.

Question for you and everyone.
Do you enjoy ecchi? If so, do you feel it sufficiently caters to your preferences? Or does it sometimes not?

I do enjoy a bit of ecchi, but I prefer it when it isn't the main theme of the series. I think there's a good reason why battle harems are so common.
Can you name a popular ecchi that doesn't have characters with big boobs? It obvious that guys in general like big boobs and since it is anime they exaggerate and cater to a wide variety of fetishes.

I've got an ecchi anime in my favorites and an ecchi manga in my favorites. I don't mind ecchi at all just so long as its used appropriately, like the foodgasms in Souma for instance, where it enhances the scene rather than distracts from the scene.
Because flat girls are more oftenly stereotyped in moe anime than ecchi ones. Really how many anime have you seen in the last few years that were strictly aimed at lolicons and was an ecchi anime? There are a handful at most. Super busty girls on the other hand can't really be stereotyped as moeblobs in the same way, and are thus almost exclusively relegated to ecchi anime alone

This is why To Love Ru is the best, its got sizes for everyone!

Ecchi series with big enough harems tend to eventually get just about every character type out there included. Doesn't happen right away though, and in most cases some of them will remain mere side characters. TLRD is a great exception thanks to the harem plan though
Don't understand it, myself. My dad once said to me "anything bigger than a handful is a waste" and I've always shared that sentiment, lol. Big are good, but too big and they're just ridiculous.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether! It's an entirely different kind of flying.

Same. Some light fanservice to supplement the visuals is fine, but, as AltoRoark99 said, it seems like producers aren't even trying to do anything more than fanservice, and they're usually fixated with just one kind—boobs, boobs, and more boobs.

The Monogatari Series. It only has one character (I think) with naturally big boobs. And I know it's not technically an ecchi, but it definitely qualities as one.

Souma is kind of another boobs obsessed anime. The only fanservice in that series was Nikumi's cleavage and Isshiki's ass. Not that I'm complaining about either. Just saying.

Shomin Sample has a lot of service for lolicons. No Game No Life is maybe another. But you're probably right. I can't recall seeing many lolis in ecchi. Or maybe I have, and my brain purged them from my memory.

Makes sense.

Right? I try to keep an open mind with all anime genres, but ecchi and harem are becoming insufferably repetitive. I don't love boobs enough to enjoy most of it.

Are the female characters demons or monsters or something? I remember seeing tails on them.
I don't mind most things. I dislike some things, but the super oversized breasts, that are bigger than the head, are the only thing that I consider outright disgusting.

Some of them are from different planets.
Lala and her sisters are from Deviluke and have tails.
One of the characters is a humanoid plant-thing.
One is an assassin from another world with no immediately noticeable physical differences.
The rest are all regular humans though.

I can only make assumptions here based on what I've seen and heard.
- Exaggeration of appealing physical features for entertainment and comedic effect
- Stock physical character attribute included to provide variety
- The idea that the emphasis on breasts lend to greater sexual stimulation and attraction
- The fact that there are people who get off to large and over sized breasts
- Large breasts implying "sexiness," where as flat chested characters would be reserved for the realm of "cuteness." Overlap exists, but not without the obligatory lolicon accusation by in-story characters
- It's enjoyed here due to fawning over breasts in real life making for awkward conversations
- The lack of realism and the lessened commitment to and implications of sexual acts makes it more approachable than hentai actual pornography
- Some reason relating to psychological imprints and physiological, primeval desires that I'm not knowledgeable about
Extended thoughts
With what ecchi I have watched, entertainment seems to come from absurdity. As in, a test of what you find appealing and attractive, before having those preferences be put on full display. These aren't shows meant to be taken seriously, nor should they be praised as legitimately good shows. At least, that's what I get from a general audience or forum community. Ecchi is to be enjoyed tongue in cheek, just as over sized breasts aren't supposed to be seriously. It's perverted, it's awkward, and it's funny because of how it's supposed to be wrong.
Imagine if a show took ecchi seriously, where a woman with over sized breasts went about her daily life, treated as either a sex object or a walking slab of meat. Social anxiety could be a real thing here, as that woman would be uncomfortable ever being in a relationship. Would her partner only like her for her breasts? Does her breasts overtake what she may be as an individual? Does it become her defining trait, despite her best attempts at diverting attention away from her appearance? Could she develop some sort of complex, where she could never wear a bathing suit or even light clothes without feeling self-conscious?
In some ways, that would be a fascinating story that takes apart a known cliche in anime. However, I'd argue it would mostly be uncomfortable, where it would challenge our morals and demand the admittance of our own shallow perceptions. It wouldn't be fun.
Anime does get away with a lot of things, including playing up the sexual attributes of people of different ages, either gender, indeterminate genders, animal people, aliens and variable species. The medium is visually unrealistic. It's drawn and animated, abstracting salient features from real life for the purposes of entertainment. I can't say if this is correct or not, as it would diverge into a rant about the potentials of anime.
For the purposes of this topic however, I'll say that titillation isn't inherently wrong, but it can be done in bad taste.

Lala and her sisters Momo and Nana are aliens from planet Deviluke, hence the devil tails.
Thanks. The next time I'm in the mood for something smutty, I'll try it.

That makes perfect sense.
Prison School, a notoriously tasteless series, is one of my favorites this year. What differentiates that ecchi from others is that it actually had a decent plot, great art, and (I thought) it was hilarious. There was one character with oversized breasts, but most of the female characters had natural proportions. Although it was full of absurdities, it didn't depend solely on boobs and craziness to hold your attention; that's what I appreciated about it.

I'd watch that. You're right, it wouldn't be fun, but it would be different, and different can be entertaining. Mardock Scramble is an unnerving psychological drama with ecchi elements. The young female lead, who's proportioned naturally, is naked a lot, but the characters usually don't make a big deal out of it, nor does the camera cut to any closeups. It's subtle, and doesn't call too much attention to itself. The main focus is the story and the conversations. I wrote a brief review. Basically what I'm saying is that fanservice shouldn't be exclusive to comedy.

that is a comedy for them. well, i don't mind it tho, it looks funny, but it's still werid, or maybe "disgusting" is the right word to say.

But I like big breasts. Of course, there is a way to design them. You can't just inflate them. Look at Divergence Eve where it looks bad, or at Freezing whee it looks great. There's an art to drawing it too.
That said, I care less about sexiness in anime. I care more about generally looking cool. I'd prefer the series to avoid fanservice and just have a cool female design (Danganronpa, Future Diary).

I like smaller tits and small girls with slimmer bodies. Tatstumaki from OPM is my type of woman.
