Anyone can condition me as to what makes an anime pretentious and some possible examples of this? Would it be its flawed attempt at handling mature themes, or is pretentious just a buzzword in the community when something is trying to portray intricate messages or morals through its story?

i guess that just makes it stupid rather than pretentious though, idk

Both of these are correct. A good example of a pretentious anime would be Code Geass.

Pretentious is an unfair label an anime receives when its fans overthink it and hype it up to be more deep and meaningful than it really is, and anyone who doesn't agree with their interpretation of it "didn't get it".

0) It's a buzzword that is often misused. It's best not to use it unless you're sure what you're doing.

1) Complicated themes, references to obscure philosophical and moral systems and so on have their place in anime. In fact, they need a lot of place and time in your anime to show their worth. If you don't give it to them - the anime becomes pretentious.
For example, Evangelion includes Tree of Sephiroth, Dead Sea Scrolls and other christian symbolism for no apparent reason. And then fails to make use of them.

2) On the other hand, slow-paced anime with unusual worlds and mysterious characters are a good place to show off some moral lessons or something. If you don't deliver, or deliver something inconsistent, anime is likely to be called pretentious.

^ You see what I did there? Saying something is pretentious, bad, overrated ect. Is just a lazy way to express ones dislike. It doesn't mean the person just didn't understand the series or cannot explain why they thought the series was bad or pretentious.

If you want I could write a whole essay why I think serial lain is not a good series. so yea, it just means the person didn't think it was worth his or her time to write a in depth opinion on the series, and not because he or she didn't understand it.

What ghouly said is just as shallow as people saying a series is pretentious. Try again. :P with ghouly logic, anyone that post buzzwords like pretentious, overrated, bad ect. Either doesn't understand the series or isn't capable of explaining why he or she doesn't like the series. And we all know for majority of the time, folks don't think its worth their time.

Anime like Nagi No Asakura, Anohana, Angel Beats and Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso.

Anime that makes drama so forced. They force everything soooo much in order to make shit look sad. Forced love, forced sadness, forced everything.

I doubt it, haters could not pick up on the core theme in the show which shows they just don't have the attention span to enjoy or understand the simple themes explored in the show.

Pretentious is something that takes more than 5 seconds of the first watch through to understand. I typed this as bluntly as a 4th grade essay so as to not seem pretentious either.

What if someone were to construct a series with legitimately unfounded symbolism, out-of-place references to philosophy and/or psychology, and present it all very ambiguously? Would you still say that there's no way it can be pretentious, since no one can explain the meaning behind the symbolism, purpose of references, etc.?

It's amazing how anime is a slightly older and smaller medium in comparison to video games yet has three times the amount of retards and wannabe critics.

Like fuck, not everything was made to cater to your taste. Just because you don't get it doesn't mean it's bad or "pretentious".

It's just you being pretentious. The western world is much of a pansy to tackle many subjects that anime does.

Huh? Pretty sure anime is several decades older than Videogames unless you count that tennis game they made on a radar back in the 40s.

Seriously, not that difficult to google the definition of a word.

A work of art is pretentious only if its creators try to present idiotic garbage as intellectual or 'deep' to impress everyone. The key component is the desire to seem important. If there's just symbolism lying around doing nothing, no matter how inappropriate or inaccurate it is, it isn't pretentious unless it is made out to be the most important thing in the show.
