I just realized that One Punch Man is so popular in my university that it became the talk of the town. I did not expect for the show to become so popular like this that even non-japanimation fans knew about it. I knew that its japanese webcomic was already popular but I dunno if it contributed for OPM to be that popular since I ask some peeps if they read aboot its Japanese comic but they dont know about it as well. Why did One Punch Man become so popular with the normies? What are factors that made this show so mainstream? Can a new Japanimation show be popular to the normies in the upcoming years? Discuss

PS: I dont care if yuo hipsters are salty with the OPM threads or the show itself I jsut want to know how this show went mainstream af

Yeah.

OP, it happens in my uni as well. With that quality animation, of course most of them will be hooked at first glance.

Because shounen is the most popular gender so it's easy to attract people with its parody.

no it's not. it's originaly a webtoon manga that normal people draw for fun, then get enough fanbase.

OT: TBH, it's mainly because visuality wise, both manga and anime. nothing more.

For the anime: omg this animation quality is amazing,so awesome, best anime ever...plus great comedy too, best anime ever.

For the manga: omg this art is godlike, best manga ever...plus great comedy too, best manga ever.

For the webcomic: the artstyle sucks, but hey it's funny

There's not enough cuteness in it for Japan. It's more based off toughness for the western audience.

Cause it's good.
Even the web comic with it's mediocre art still keeps you reading.

And the fights are GOOD :O

Agreed, SnK was really flashy and differed from the norm, so can it be safe to assume that the more abnormal an anime is in the west, the more people will watch it? That would explain a lot.

I even had one of my friends change his profile pic on Skype to Saitama and I never even realized he liked anime.

The manga is way more popular than the anime in Japan. That's because Madhouse is shit and so is westerners' taste.

I do think that One Punch Man is in some ways appealing because it is a parody of both anime and the Western superhero genre at the same time, whether that was intentional or not. I mean, look at Saitama. Cape and all, he looks more like a superhero than your average modern anime character.

The super hero genre is the greatest , most popular and universal genre in existence. Literally everyone in the world knows Superman, Batman, Spiderman. OPM being mainly a superhero parody (it also paraodies battle shonen (mainly DBZ) and mahou shoujo on one occasion) makes it easily watchable for non anime fans. The great animation, Saitama being op would also contribute to the appeal .

What? KyoAni is as much loved in the West than in Japan. It's a fan-service studio.
Madhouse is still shit tho. Crappy animation, soulless adaptation, ugly chara-design, recycled themes and backgroud. Watching Madhouse anime is as exciting as slicing bread. Just to discover that each slice of bread are exactly the same plain piece of cafeteria's crappiest meal one after one.

At least KyoAni has actually good animation and some variety as well.
