What's the point of being an RPG hero if the entire world isn't in danger?

Just because the villains intent isn't to destroy or take over the world doesn't mean they don't pose a threat to it.

Come to think of it, I'm somewhat interested in this too. From the games I've played, I can only name a few that doesn't have the "Destroy/Rule the World" motive. From memory; Yu Yevon from FFX (though arguable), Venat and Vayne from FFXII and.... I can't remember anything else.

Have you ever played Dragon Quest 4? Psaro didn't necessarily want to take over or destroy the world actually I'd go into detail but that would be spoiling the story. Also he's the oldest RPG villain I can think of with an actual back story, character developement, and doesn't just appear at the very end of the game.

Jowy from Suiko2 didn't want to destroy the world. He wanted to fix the empire.

I'm sure there are at least a few SNES games that did it too, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. A NES game that did it was really ahead of its time though, good job finding those.

I just mentioned two NES games.

IIRC, wasn't psaro's goal just to kill all of the humans? That's not much different. If I had to guess though, it was probably a D&D game.

Kind of but its a bit more complicated than that. What I mean is he was driven by a motive that wasn't just destroy the world for the sake of destroying the world.

I considered the Dark Cloud the primary antagonist. Also Sweet Home and DQ 4 came before it.

Cloud of Darkness was moreso a program of the worlds than an antagonist. It was the final boss, yes, but it didn't even appear until after Xande was defeated and it wasn't like CoD was controlling Xande or manipulating things behind the scenes. It's like Necron from FFIX. It was the final boss, but Kuja/Garland were the main antagonists.

Fair enough. And the final Boss of FF 9 is called Necron? Sounds like some game designers were watching Ralph Bakshi cartoons lol.
