Who was the first primary antagonist in an RPG to have a motive other than taking over or destroying the world?

| Come to think of it, I'm somewhat interested in this too. From the games I've played, I can only name a few that doesn't have the "Destroy/Rule the World" motive. From memory; Yu Yevon from FFX (though arguable), Venat and Vayne from FFXII and.... I can't remember anything else. |

| Jowy from Suiko2 didn't want to destroy the world. He wanted to fix the empire. I'm sure there are at least a few SNES games that did it too, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. A NES game that did it was really ahead of its time though, good job finding those. |

| IIRC, wasn't psaro's goal just to kill all of the humans? That's not much different. If I had to guess though, it was probably a D&D game. |

It was the final boss, yes, but it didn't even appear until after Xande was defeated and it wasn't like CoD was controlling Xande or manipulating things behind the scenes. It's like Necron from FFIX. It was the final boss, but Kuja/Garland were the main antagonists. |
