I always wondered what shows people absolutely love but would never recommend to a new watcher. Personally, I'd say the Monogatari series (which is personally one of my favorites), because for myself it took awhile for me to really get good at reading subtitles quickly and catching overt Japanese references. Plus all the talking and staying in the same place can be hard for people to latch onto.

Anything that relies heavily on Japanese in-jokes, like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

All the shitty high school / romance series so they don't have to interact with a weeaboo and want to kill themselves after realizing these people exist.

Try harder.

Seconding SZS. I love it, but oh man is it full of Japanese cultural references. Not to mention that you need a decent understanding of the Japanese language to even get half the jokes because they just don't translate into English at all. I mean, the entire reason behind the protagonist being the way he is is because of his name's kanji.

EDIT: Also anything focusing on chuunibyou stuff, like Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! or Inou Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de. And things with lots of references to other anime, like Nyaruko-san and Lucky☆Star.

Kill la Kill. Relies on understanding tropes in high school and shonen as well as at least a vague familiarity with mecha and Mahou Shoujo. There's a few Japanese jokes as well.

Referrences to K-ON!, and battle royal, and a few others I have not seen. It just requires you to be confortable with anime in general.

I probably wouldn't recommend K-ON! because cute girls eating cake and drinking tea isn't going to be well received by people who haven't watched anime.

Bakemonogatari for obvious reasons.

Of course, but I found it more enjoyable as I watch more shows and more parts of it become more than spectacle. I still don't think it's great for newbies because it's so ridiculous.

I don't think anyone would warn a Japanese novice to American cinema to steer clear of, say, 2001: A Space Odyssey in favor of Armageddon, would they?

Honestly, this idea that some Anime could be too challenging for someone based solely on their unfamiliarity with it reeks of self agrandiszment. People over blowing the importance or worth of something they care about in order to make themselves feel special for liking it.

But one of those is clearly better than the other... there's a big difference between challenging and unenjoyable. I would not have liked WataMote if it had been the first anime I watched.

Soon as LotGH 2017 comes out. The anime community is going to become so cancerous you will need to take cover and hide.

Clearly? Perhaps to you. Personally I wouldn't think to compare the two.

Regardless, perceived quality is totally irrelevant in this instance, as people aren't suggesting that a show is 'too good' for a new viewer, but rather too challenging for their pitiful, newbie brains to appriciate so just stick to the simple stuff, champ. It's patronizing.

Actually, even though people often say that the really western inspired shows are good gateway anime, I beg to differ.

You show them something like Monster or Cowboy Bebop and they'll just end up disappointed when they come to the shocking realisation that Japan makes anime for Japanese people and not them. They'll go searching for more stuff like it and they'll probably find a handful of shows to their interest. But they'll be swimming through a sea of cutesy or otherwise distinctly Japanese shows to get that point.

When they realise that fact, that's when they get angry. When they get angry, they'll want to vent their frustrations. When they want to vent their frustrations, they'll take to their Internet. When they get on the Internet, they find anime forums. I think you know the rest.

I got into anime through cutesy stuff like K-On!, Haruhi and Lucky Star so I was fortunate enough to never go through that phase.

There are definitely shows I wouldn't have liked as an introduction but I guess it's more about knowing the taste of the person you're suggesting anime to than categorizing them into 'newbie' and 'non-newbie'.

Except from pretty evil troll picks like that and pupa,

I guess you shouldn't recommended animes which heavily build on knowledge about other animes like world_god_only_knows do. Though that series is a refined pick for the matured fan later. ;D
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting the results to change.

Gintama since there's no way he'd get all these references. Monogatari also seems like a strong contender.
