This Japanese reference book was talking sh*t about anime and manga

I mean, sure you can argue this thing was published in the 80's but still. The amount of shots fired was like damn. "(Anime is) a lowering of taste produced by television," woah man chill you're starting to sound like the Miyazaki memes here. Personally, I'm a bit more rustled that the whole book only gave anime/manga two paragraphs of attention but that's just me. I'm used to everyone talking smack about anime and manga, especially my favorites.

Discuss what little relevance this book has today.

Sounds like a guy who was never good enough to be a mangaka so he settled to writing novels

Probably pissed no ones buying his books, so he had to vent about it somewhere to feel superior.

The back of the book said he was some Japanese born and American raised teacher that teaches at Harvard. That Harvard knowledge really shines in these excerpts, eh?

He also had a Japanese wife and wrote that book in his 70's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_O._Reischauer

Even more edgy. I like it. Guess there just wasn't enough good anime and manga yet back then.

The college was selling outdated books and I spotted this gem out of the pile, but I wasn't expected something quite this outdated lol. Still shows a lot though.

To me is more like he had limited or no knowledge of anime and manga and going by generalizations. Considering his age , time period and the fact that he wasn't in the anime or any animated industry that he would have a negative outlook of animation in general and comics.

I'm not sure how I feel about a college professor writing a book off generalizations but it's whatever. Anyone who knows anything about anime and manga know's he's full of it anyway, at least on that particular subject.

Good.

But seriously tho Japanese ppl seem to hate anime (With the exception of Miyazaki) unless they themselves are into anime.

Well anime and manga were not the main focus of the book so he can get away with it I suppose. If the book was only about anime and manga then that would be inexcusable.

Yeah he'd lose what little credibility he had starting out if this was just about anime and manga. I'm just surprised he didn't speak more about them, but he would have just been slandering the medium some more anyway.

Author just had good taste.

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself."

The writer has a point. Modern pop culture is a destructive influence on society and has created generations of non-productive non critical thinking mass consumers and chronic masturbators. But it's contribution to societal degradation is probably worse in western countries.

Let's worry about the school losing its accreditation again together.
