| I actually went in depth with this at my panel at Banzai last October. So there are some things to do and to not do when using chopsticks. It's mostly based off of either luck or ceremonies, usually having to do with funerals. Those are usually the Don'ts. Don't: Cross your chopsticks on the table (it signifies bad luck '|x|') Pass food from chopstick to chopstick (another thing done in funerals) Stabbing your chopsticks upright in your food (it's shown as an offering to the dead) Point with your chopsticks (just rude) While here are some Dos: Do: Lay your chopsticks pointing from right to left when not using them Use the reverse side to pick up food when shared from another person's plate Use a rest for the tip of your chopsticks when laying them down (or use the rolled up wrapper from the disposable chopsticks if in a restaurant) So kinda as a way for helping out the Asian restaurant community when I visit Columbia I ask for a bunch of their chopsticks to leave out to help out their business. If you've ever been to a convention, try to hit those places early. Come dinner time they are crowded like mad. This place called Menkoi Ramen House gets slammed relentlessly by convention goers and it's only about a 40ish seat place regularly. But hey, authentic ramen beats the 3 minute stuff plus it is mad filling. Needed when you're on your feet constantly traversing each panel heh. |
