Not sure. I guess I just keep hoping they will get better or something. I don't like wandering what will happen next. That's the reason I kept watching Dexter after the halfway point lol. Dexter isn't an anime, but the same idea holds.
I guess if something truly repulsed me I'd drop it. I don't start those kind of shows because they are quite easy to spot though (Prison School, for ex).

But Dexter was really good during season 1 & 2 so I can understand why you'd finish it and it's not like the other season was shitty, it's just not as good as the first 2 seasons.

For a few reasons.

1 : Completionists. I dislike dropping anime, so I'll see it through to the end.

2 : The anime might get better later on. I thought Owari no Seraph S1 was truly dreadful in the first half, but it scraped by decently by the time it finished. It got better.

3 : The idea that "If I don't finish the anime, the time I spent watching those 3,4,5 episodes is wasted."
It's kind of a funny thing, because I end up wasting even more time by watching more episodes so that I can say I've finished it.

Because the anime usually doesn't start off that shitty. Along with that, when I'm halfway through a series and it turns into utter shit I feel like I might as well finish it out instead of quitting (only dropped 2 anime out of 250).

I can totally understand watching a bad show with a good premise to the end. It can be a fun mental exercise to try and pinpoint what went wrong or how it could have been done better. But when the show is garbage to start with... I just don't know. I guess it's like watching a train wreck. Also, sometimes people just want something to fuel their anger.

Because it's a generalized score for the entire anime (or individual season). Sometimes the ending can make the anime better or worse. Like, if the anime is a 5 the whole way through, and the last episode is really disappointing, the score will drop. Or if it's pretty decent, it may raise. It depends. Also, it's not like the anime starts out that bad usually.

Though, if the anime is really bad a majority of the time (like Isuca) I continue to watch it in hopes it might get better. But I don't really like to drop anime. :3

Just varying degrees of crappiness and length. I was watching Akame I tried to finish it but just couldnt go any further, but other ones like coyote ragtime I pushed through.

Because who knows, there might be a redeeming quality in the end. You can't just judge an anime if it's shitty until you've seen it to the end IMO. I've read some crappy books but in the later chapters, it gets really good thus changing my overall opinion on the book.

Now I understand your point of just dropping it. It's the same concept as sports. Suppose your favorite team was losing horribly. Most people would turn their TVs off and a very few would watch it till the end hoping for their team to have a comeback but the probability is low. An anime that is considered shitty would probably stay shitty till the end. Very rarely would the shitty anime turn out to be great.

Sometimes is just about broadening your scores. As long as you keep watching, some of them might be changing in order to make your list more consistant to what you really think about them (or your bias).

Also because of the reason some people already mentioned, you might have watched something a long time ago and nowadays you have a different opinion of it. That's why the average of my last completed shows is way better than the overall one, as you said, OP, I'm trying to pick things I'd enjoy.

Then I find guys watching shows just in order to complete studios works or stuff like that. But they have huge lists of maybe +1000 completed. Maybe they want to have an opinion about more stuff, but that's another topic I guess.

I see people with completed anime that they scored 1-4. Why would they finish watching something so shitty? It's like if it's me watching a paint dry, after a second I'd realize that it sucks and stop watching it but these people, they'd probably watch it for 10 minutes or until the paint dries before they realize it sucks lol.

watching paint dry means it's stretched, slow, boring and uneventful. You can't know that after a second.
I probably regret this post by now.

I think these people either want to complete as many anime as they can, or they just want to give the anime a chance until the end.

As for me, I don't have the patience for that. If I don't like it after three episodes, I'll usually feel like continuing it will just be a waste of time I could be spending on another series.

It is getting harder not to drop series though... kind of like right now 1/2 way through Fate/SN:UBW

I wouldn't really like it if I watched fantastic anime one after another tbh. I'd get too into the idea that anime is God's Grace or something, so it's good to keep a balance. And sometimes, you come across an anime that is fun to watch BECAUSE it's bad, so that you can have fun tearing to fucking shreds.

To me, 4 can be "guilty pleasure anime with few story/character merits and below-average animation/sound/etc. quality" -- bad enough for a low rating, but still enjoyable. Or as the ANN rating scale puts it, "Not really good, but not a total waste either". Most things I'd rate truly bad like 1-3 tend to be hentai or short OVAs; I'm enough of a completionist as it is, but I'm certainly not going to drop a 1-episode title at minute 18 of 25 or whatever.

There is only one anime that I have given a 1 to and actually watched a related anime to it (Nendo no Tatakai). They were both only a minute long, but I still think it's a bit weird that I watched the sequel.

Completionist seems to be most correct.

Finishing the show allows me to give it a more accurate and valid score. I don't think I have another reason.

I've rarely seen anime that improves greatly over the last 2-3 episodes.

With a lot of anime, you can tell how they are based on 10 episodes. They give you can accurate enough image of what the anime is like.

I finish bad anime so that I can hate on it. If I don't finish it, I can't hate on it because it could've gotten better, and I will have wasted the time I spent watching some of it. But if I finish it, it will have been worth it because I'll get to rant about it, and ranting is fun.

watching terrible anime makes me appreciate better anime - it is easier to see the great things that tend to disappear in good animes when you see these things done poorly in bad animes.

although I can't say I have never dropped an anime, I usually like to give animes the benefit of the doubt, hoping that they will improve. I also never drop an anime when I am over 2/3 of the way finished with it. At that point you might as well just finish it off-

Generally for me it's either not wanting to give up hope on it, or because I've heard very good things about it, but failed to see it and held out to the end to see what made it so great.

I tend not to drop things, I just take extremely long hiatuses(they can even last years). I find that while an anime might piss me off with how bad it seems I still really want to see its outcome. Call it morbid fascination call it masochism, whatever. Don't get me wrong, I get pissed off, and I need my breaks but I still want to see how it turns our for better or worse :/
