Anime/Manga Search
The old search landing pages, which used to be populated by recent reviews and recommendations, are in the process of being revamped.

While the pages are temporarily only a wall of text, you can see the beginnings of our new genre search pages, anime studio pages, and manga magazine pages. Results are currently sorted by most entries/members, and the view can be toggled between cells or lists.

This is the first step in a series of improvements coming for our anime/manga searches. Please look forward to more robust search and display options in the future.

Anime DB Moderators Needed
Site-wide recruitment is still ongoing! Consider applying if you'd like to help contribute more to MAL.

Other Dev Concerns
I suspect there will be some complaints that this update was pushed before all the bugs are worked out on the new profile design, and before the review system sees more improvements. Please understand that development on MAL is now (finally!) a team effort. This means that multiple projects are being planned, developed, debugged, and executed simultaneously.

A series of fixes for the profile design should be pushed sometime today. We haven't had time to make any posts in regards to the profile design yet, but we're reading and processing all your feedback. Review changes are also still in the pipeline; they have not been forgotten.

Please try to understand that multiple ongoing projects is the way development works on MAL now. We appreciate your patience.

Oh boy. What do you expect when the devs can't even finish one project properly?

Uhh, yeah? Never said otherwise. In any case, I meant it as MAL lacking a proper base to work on comparing to most of the well planned out software projects do. Not to mention devs incompetence in handling such projects. Moreover, software components are usually worked simultaneously if they have enough manpower. Do we have enough manpower?

Top anime/manga pages are still there, and there's still the option when you use advanced search to find something.

Interesting that Sho-Comi apparently has more manga entries than any other manga magazine. I wouldn't have expected that.

interesting question,
they could have copied the filters/sorting from the seasonal anime page (since they seems to have copied the design from there anyway)

There's only one fix it needs, reverting to the old layout or at least the option to choose which to use. No matter how long you polish a turd, it's still a turd.

Ah..toei..yeah you shouldn't be surprised since it's like the bigest and oldest and richest animation studio in japan..I'm more surprised about Madhouse,..I mean, I didn't expect them to be in the 3rd place right after Toei and Sunrise..

Also..I think if A-1 keep it up with 3-5 anime every season..it will surpass Toei in some years..you now..they actually start making anime only in 2006..(Toei since 40s)

#2, each entry needs to be tagged with 1 (one) studio recognized as the actual animation studio (or if multiple studios are credited with that position, all of them). No more random Lantis or Aniplex under producers, make it so we can clearly so what animation studio produced them.

This would help a lot.

Even if you are younger, it shouldn’t stop you from sending in your application. Show Kineta that you have: a)a passion for that website, b)good English skills and c) show her that you understand c.1) Database Guidelines: Characters & People, c.2) Database Guidelines: Anime. If it is not a problem for you, you will surely become a moderator.

Particular props for making sorting by year more visible. I don't think most people knew you could do that before via the seasonal anime page.

If you want to fill in other associated companies, do it AniDB- or ANN-style where you list their position for each entry. The current way of associating producers with entries is just stupid.

I think we all know the answer to this... And the answer is very simple.
How to fix the review section, detailed here

The average reader (HS level) reads at about 200 WPM. So a 500-800 word review should take 3-5 minutes to read. That's an acceptable length for something you're interested in spending 25 minutes to 4.5 hours of your life watching.

Oh, and ANN requires any and all reviews to be 800-1200 words, no matter the length of the show.
