It's ranked the 78th best anime movie, Gintama's second movie (favourite movie of all time) is ranked the 1st.

Do you guys think this is an awesome movie?

I don't, unfortunately. Sorry bud.

Thats obvious, you have a prepubescent girl as your avatar.

@ OP, amazing movie from a time when anime was more than overused cliche's and fanservice. The music, imagery and animation inspired a generation.

I'm with you OP. Akira has been my favourite film since I first experienced it in 1992. I love everything about it. The visuals. The music. The sheer energy. Even the somewhat confusing plot. It's a film that I can watch and rewatch on multiple levels and always discover some new connection within the story or detail in the film's stunning animation. I don't know if it's THE best, but it's my favorite anime movie and I consider it at least one of the best.

Yes best anime ever without hesitation and who dare compare this anime to Naruto deserve to be hung by his balls ( Naruto = Shonen Akira = Seinen.) . Best Manga EVER MADE and better to read than to watch so imagine how powerful is this Manga. Katsuhiro Otomo is just a genius. I just watched it ( again X) ) and still now nobody did better. Sorry kids and Naruto's fanboys but this time old school win.

Nope, the first half an hour was some really good cyberpunk, and yes the animation is great (but topped by the original GitS movie imo) but the story is a fucking mess.

Ghost in the Shell was released 7 years after Akira u can't compare the animation. Technics was very different. It's just a non-sense to compare them. And the budget was very different too. I agree GitS animation was just awesome and the opening fabulous. But Akira ost is better.

Well when the thread is about something as broad as "the best anime movie ever made", it does make sense to compare it with every other anime movie, to figure out which one is the best.

You have got to read the manga if you liked Akira. It is far better and over half the manga story was not animated in the movie.

Not a movie, but I honestly enjoyed Glasslip more than Akira. Somehow Akira was based on a highly acclaimed manga and yet fails to have a comprehensible story. They characters all look the same, even the females, so it's hard to even know what character is even on screen without someone using their name. Tsumiki no Ie, Eve no Jikan, Wolf Children, Madang-Eul Naon Amtalg, Hal, Nasu: Andalusia no Natsu, Chirin no Suzu, and Flanders no Inu are much better anime movies.

It is the only anime film I see listed in my current Top 10 film list. I think it's definitely the best animated film I've seen. I had the pleasure to see it in the theater last year in Japanese, and I was even further convinced of its majesty. Apart from the engrossing, complex plot, the film itself is just a pleasure to look at. The amount of detail is overwhelming.

I'd also like to point out this great YT vlog on the deconstructing the amount of detail in one particular scene -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBAJdtPVnZc

I'll be sad if Otomo never releases a feature length animated film again.

Redline is on my watchlist, but based on what I've seen in the trailer I can appreciate what you're saying. But at the same time bro, gotta look at Akira in context. For being made in 1988, it still holds amazingly well. It's like an exhibit of a dying/dead method of producing animation.

i think you misinterpreted the word 'topped'. it would be embarrassing in the anime industry to say that something from 20 years ago still holds the top. same, but different example would be video game graphics from 20 years ago and now. don't get me wrong, i appreciate 80s-90s OVAs and movies

Not the best but among the best animes and a mark on Anime's history, as 'Akira' is one of the artworks that introduced anime to the western people.

The animation was nice, and I really enjoyed the city designs, but by and large I found it to be... really boring.

Truly, this movie is full of great designs and gif-material, but the actual story holding it all together had me checking the time every few minutes. I might rewatch it again someday with a friend, but probably not on my own.

the animation was good, but story-wise it's unbelievably bad. in fact, the ending was so bad, that it just left me staring at the credits for a couple of seconds just to realize that it's over. it's really hard to find a shittier ending than that

No, 'Akira' is not the best anime movie ever made. But it is one of the best animes ever made and much western people knew anime because of this Katsuhiro Otomo's artwork.

Redundancy (laughs).

Naah,it's great but not the best. Perfect Blue, 5 Centimeter Per Second,Toki wa Kakeru Shoujo,Kimi no Na Wa, Princess Mononoke,GiTS and Kaguya Hime are better. If you like lots of actions, destruction and explosion then it's great but the story is not that great.

Yes. Enjoy your answer.

It is by far not just the best anime movie, but one of my all-time favourite films of all time. The symbolism is amazing, the animation more so, and it reminds me of Gangs of New York somehow. If I could, I'd award it far more than 10/10.

Not the best, but it was certainly a game changer.

I first saw Akira back in the mid-90s, and it was phenomenal. I always wanted to be Kaneda. After seeing it, I used to ride down the street on my red bicycle, with a lead pipe in my hand, trying to re-enact scenes from the movie. I even printed out pictures of the stickers that Kaneda had on his bike, and taped them all over my bicycle.

Ironically, I would generally never watch an Anime as violent as Akira nowadays, but that film still holds a place in my heart, and I have fond memories of it. I rented the tape from the video store many times, and I also own it on laserdisc.

Akira is the best movie ever made. it has the best atmosphere in animation out of any animated movie ever created and on top of it the story is so realistic to the point that is where our society is heading is a cataclysmic supernatural event that will shape and re-scope entire human history. if you don't understand why it's the greatest movie ever made you're just not very in tune with the spirit world.

Yeah no.. I mean I'm sure it was great back in the day, but for today' standard the animation is.. well below today' standard for good animation (e.g. KNY).
And the art style is of course subjective but IMO it is very very outdated and unpleasant to look at.
I don't know how signatures work
