The official end of an era. I'll give it to them, they managed to hang on for a long time. But yeah, the demand isn't really there anymore. Porn is no longer restricted to the VHS tapes and magazines you had to hide from your parents/partners. Modern technology allows for instant access and gratification.  |

My first taste of porn was indeed a playboy a buddy of ours brought to school....LOL, this was in the 90s when magazines were still very much relevant. I was like 10 or 11...but I liked what I saw. Anyway....their brand is the only thing they still have going for them. I don't know why anyone would ever buy playboy magazine for anything other than nostalgia sake... | Damn shame. Playboy is pretty tame in terms of the nudity, it's softcore like you guys said. And it really is SOFTcore. Still, I remember being nervous as hell walking into a store to get one of the Special Editions, you know, one of those issues which has no articles at all but the Playmates themselves (all nude, of course). It was the only physical porn I ever bought but I can at least say I did buy a Playboy mag. So yeah, Playboy without nudes isn't Playboy at all. But it always seemed like the end of the brand in terms of the nudes was in sight. |

| The whole article focuses on the destruction of softcore or something but that is bullshit. Softcore hasn't gone away. Nor did pictures of naked ladies. There is softcore all over the internet with sexy photo-shoots of sexy ladies. Not all nudes are of women shoving three dicks in their ass or sucking cock. Many are softcore. It just that the internet gives more and for free and even more variety. Basically it gives the same product better. Therefore Playboy has no use. It's simple as that. Nothing is lost by not having Playboy showing us softcore naked ladies. We still have and always will have plenty of that. |

Playboy was a groundbreaking publication in its first two decades or so, and it was an important part of the sexual revolution of the 1960s. Over the years, I have seen a few copies from the 1950s through the 1970s, and I was impressed by the quality of the journalism. This allowed it to appeal to people beyond its target audience of horny young and middle-aged men. Anybody with an open-minded attitude toward sexuality could find something worthwhile in Playboy in its heyday. Sure, it might have been a bit sexist (especially by today's standards), but it had a sense of freedom about it that I haven't often seen elsewhere. It seems to me that the decline started during the 1980s. Perhaps Playboy was a victim of its own success. Despite the occasional conservative backlash, the sexual revolution has largely succeeded in the west. This success, along with the wide availability of pictures of naked women on the internet, has perhaps rendered magazines like Playboy irrelevant. I suppose it must either reinvent itself or die. I may not be part of Playboy's target demographic, but I still appreciate the work that the magazine did in its earlier years to advance the cause of sexual freedom. And, I must admit, the pictures were great. |
