We are currently looking for 2-3 people who would like to help us run MAL's official event Fantasy Anime League.

The Fantasy Anime League (FAL) is similar to Fantasy Sports but with an anime twist. Players form their own team by selecting anime from the upcoming season. These teams then compete by getting weekly points according to certain criteria. For players that wish to be more active, FAL also offers some strategic elements. For more information check out the FAL Club and the introduction.

We're looking for people with solid programming knowledge in Python. You should also be able to be on IRC to communicate with the rest of the FAL staff.

Your tasks as part of the FAL staff:
- Modifying our scripts (e.g. fixing bugs)
- Implementing new features when the rules change
- Running the scripts after the week's deadline at 18:00/19:00 UTC (every 2-3 weeks)
- Discussing changes and other FAL related things

If you're interested please send me a PM on MAL or on IRC (#myanimelist@rizon.net).

If you have any questions or concerns (for example, you can program but you can't make it for the deadline) but would still like to help, please message me and we can discuss it.

I look forward to hearing from you :)

Debugging? Reading other people's codes? Good luck with that.

This sounds like the Anime Characters Rank Wars (I really miss that club) but this whole Python thing is a huge turn-off.

Do you know the difference between Python and Java? I'm only familiar with the latter.

The syntax is really different, for starters.

But in general, Python is a higher level programming language, and is a lot easier to use - it requires you to type a whole lot less to get essentially the same result as you would using Java.

Does helping out with FAL offer the chance to gain these badges as well?

If it wasn't given any thought yet, then this might be a nice chance to expand the matter from MAL Rewrite to FAL as well.

couldn't we try and solicit help across different parts of the internet, such as Reddit too? or other anime sites? (e.x: Crunchyroll, anime nation, anime forums, animesuki)

Maybe we could find more people for the future as well since, since like most people, I don't know how to program either.

Unfortunately debugging and maintenance are hard jobs to fill in the IT industry due to the perception that they are not "glamourous" jobs. That being said, they are essential as maintenance is often more labour intensive than making a product. The main reason why debugging is difficult is often down to poor documentation by those who implemented to original program. If you have good documentation (and inline scripting comments) it can make the job easier for the maintenance programmer.

I'm studying computer science but Python is not one of my best and most used languages. I can still work with it most of the time though. If no one wants to do it, feel free to contact me and I will take a look what I can do.
