I'm speechless... I freakin loved this first episode, I can't explain it, but the atmosphere and overall feeling is what made this episode amazing (oh and the fact that the child characters are interesting and not annoying, which is in the least... super rare)

Decent first episode, although the kid's face kind of annoys me for some reason.

It's kind of cool to see the war from a civilian's point of view, a child at that. Great animation for such an old series and I especially liked the music.

I think it's safe to say that the moment that Zaku flew above that kid, it was love at first sight.

I thought that too :D
I'm loving this already. Alfred and his cute way of interest is soo much like a 10 year old boy's attitude. This is such an amazing concept by the creators~

That intro gave me the impression that the series would take an even more gritty instance to the Gundam themes, and then that cheery opening song kicks in and we get some happy-go-lucky elementary kids story. Even when the MS start attacking, they are not one bit disturbed by the destruction and (possible) deaths around them (and yet another cheery song). I'm not sure if they wanted to show how the kids are oblivious to the horrors of war, or if they're just trying to keep the metaseries' practice of pulling a happy first episode.

Well, I gave a chance to the 50 episode long Zeta, so I'm not dropping these OVA so soon.

I have only seen the Original and Seed (dropped Destiny), but I can still safely say this is the best Gundam show by a significant amount. The art, groundbreaking animation, music, atmosphere, and likability of characters in the first and episode and the rest is impressive. Its worth watching Gundam just for this show. Also great Japanese voice casts, some of my favorites from their other shows, although Tenshinhan and Picollo's voice actors from the Original Mobile Suit Gundam was a real treat.

I really really enjoyed this.
I'm refraining from reading the synopsis to all the Gundam stuff i'm watching so I didn't know this was going to be focused on an elementary school kid.

Also hold up one freaking minute. The little boy was voiced by this fabulous man? OMG...
He was like 13 at the time. A-fucking-plus right there!

I love the atmosphere of this one. This time, it's focused on civilian (and a kid one at that!) of Side 6, the neutral colony. I also love that some kind of portrait (?) photo slideshow of the ED.

It's almost scarily eye-opening after watching all those Zetas and ZZ's, how it looks from a single civilian's eye when Kamille or Amuro flies to a colony, bringing destruction with them. And this first episode succeeded in that even surprisingly well.

I felt like I was watching Miyazaki's Grave of the Fireflies for a moment there.

Definitely looking forward to more!

That was fucking fantastic. I just love the feeling and visuals of the early 90s anime (though this is from 1989 apparently). The animation is extremely good and the beginning was seriously intense. I loved how the Mobile Suits use machine guns. That was incredible.

It seems I'm getting into a seriously good and underrated series here, let's hope everything stays as good.

Huh, I found this first episode just okay. The kids' reactions to the MS fighting was pretty passive and one kid even mentioned that the main kid was going to miss class... Them being passive is okay, but it's a bit unbelievable that they could still think that class would meet when mobile suits are attacking in the city.

The Zaku flying overhead and the ending was totally love at first sight for that little kid.

That was a amazing first episode, the opening battle was
really well done, seeing how ordinary people live in the colonies was pretty neat too.

Anyone get the feeling that bit with Al destroying the town in the video game is foreshadowing what's actually going to happen.

Not so sure about it being a foreshadowing of Al straight up destroying the colony but it's probably letting us know that he'll soon enough get a taste of what it actually means to do IRL what he did in his little game.

Anyway, it was a fine first episode : the passiveness of the kids kinda bothered me too, even though the fact that they're completely oblivious to the horrors of the war might explain it to a certain extent, but other than that really nothing bad to say.
Also the kid's face as he watched the Zaku flying away totally won me over. I'm hooked and really looking forward to the next episodes.

Finally got my ass off and began watching the side stories after finishing ZZ and Char's Counterattack last Feb. Starting with War in the Pocket.

It's good episode, i love how it focuses more on the side of the war like Zaku which normally get's destroyed in Zeta and ZZ so easily.

I knew Chris is voiced by Hayashibara, Megumi. She really sounds young here.

And lol why is that there's a freaking battle going on and the kids are being allowed to wander around like that? No ones panicking or putting everyone in shelter or so.

Like the music, very 80s like, lol the Video Games are still light gun retro games despite the technology of having a colony on space :P

Good stuff!! Hope to see more of the other side for sure ^^

Pretty damn good first episode,it's not convoluted and sets everything up perfectly.Really good as an introduction.
I gotta say though, the anime has aged pretty well in my opinion.

I agree about the characters, except for the girl in his class. She is an annoying brat. And a smartass and tattletale to boot.

Love at first sight... not between the boy and the machine but me and this anime.: Character-designs from Mikimoto, 80s-90s music and style, a great and exciting intro (the Zeon mission), an attractive change in the point-of-view it takes. And Hayashibara Megumi (I am a lot more attached to voices from this period and Hayashibara is a very good trade for Furuya)

It was nice for a first OAV to take the time to show the everyday life of spacenoids (this won't probably happen again, since it has only 6 episodes). The children reaction was exactly what I would have figured out based on their age, the fact their colony never took a part in the conflict, etc... The Zeon
child soldier is nothing bad since it takes place shortly after the end of the war, when both sides had to face men shortage. I am even more interested: I loved those war movies where a lost soldier is found by someone of the opposite camp who then elaborate upon that. (there is often a child who will "like" the soldier in those stories)

Andy got headshot.
She snitched on him. lol
In the nuts.
Al bumps into a girl.
Her name is Chris.
Oh shit. Al's topless already. The kid moves fast.
Hai. Hai.
Al peeking.
Dat explosion.
Zeon is attacking.
Of course Al runs after it.
Now he has a gun pointed at him.

Good start.

I watched this series some time ago, didn't like it then and honestly after watching
it looks as if I'll like this even less this time around. Some notes of interest:

  • Why do fedie pilots usually suck?
  • Melon Fanta
  • No white knight for the girl
  • Stilted dialogue

Coming here after the original movie trilogy, great 1st episode. Glad to see kids who are not annoying, and I enjoy the dynamics between them. Chris is also cool, I love how casual and carefree her relationship with Al seems to be.
Also interesting how even during the fight scenes there's no serious music. Is it to point out that kids don't yet take the horrors of war seriously?

P.S. Note how many famous people worked on this. Junichi Satou, Hiroyuki Yamaga, Takeshi Honda... Great

P.P.S. I also loved the eyecatches

P.P.P.S. Why do civilians still use paper letters in the world of Gundam?

The thing is you're comparing a long TV series with a short OAV series. OAVs were "deluxe" productions usually. Also, this has to do with the differences between the chara-designers style too I think (and thanks to the money/time, you get more faithful in-episode renditions of the original charadesign).

Time to start my third Gundam. I didn't understand the connection between the battle in the beginning with the rest of the episode (it was clear after the next episode lol). Besides that, it was good start. The kid is ok and this is just an introduction.

This is the first time I'm dipping my toes in a non-Tomino Gundam series. Very promising start. The animation is gorgeous, the OST is excellent so far, and the action, while limited in this first episode, is great. Overall I get the feeling this one's gonna tug on my heartstrings.

It's awesome seeing the Zaku in action in gorgeous, big budget 80s animation.

So i originally planned to watch Thunderbolt next in my chronological journey through the UC, only to realize via research that it is not only, in fact, happening in its own timeline, but also an unfinished manga adaptation that ends on a cliffhanger.

So now i guess ill watch this instead. This and 0083 are very popular in the fandom, but so was 8th MS Team and that was 2/10 guttertrash. Just like 8th MS Team, this is a very promising first episode. I hope it doesnt let me down.

My only complaint so far is that the GMs seem less than useless. If GMs are that ineffective against Zeon, why even use them?

So onto the ovas Finshed Chars counterattack and okay our new protag is a elemntry school boy way yoounger than our previos ones. I really like the pacing of the episode its slow and not mcuh happened but i liked it compare tpo the previos shpws where im all confused by episode 1. Seems als parents are seperated its a common theme for protags parents to not like each other lol. Al is a cute charcter and christina seems cool she was also mentioned in chars counter attack by quess so i woinder what her charcter is about and she is also voiced by Megumi hayshibara which is neet
