This show to me is about showing the similarities between the angles of earth and the seals of heaven. The Manga helps develop the characters much more and tells the story much better than the show. Try to watch how the ones each character want to protect most can't, and put this into considerations when watching this show.
When in doubt, runnnnnnnn

I love CLAMP, I really do. Almost all of their stories have captivated me and kept me reading/watching eagerly... except X.

It's really, really boring. I try to force myself through an episode or two every once in a while, but just can't do it. I watch one every few months and just can't touch the series again for a while. I really want to finish it, out of my love for CLAMP, but it's just... really not my kettle of fish.

I disagree. The show doesn't drag on. The first half of the series is setting the stage for the final battle and introducing the two sides of the conflict. The second half is the actual (and rather epic) battle for the fate of the world, with Kamui at it's heart. Lives are lost and sacrifices are made, all in a beautiful, breathtaking way. The only complaint I have about the anime is that some of the comedy was cut out.

As for themes... There are several. People living on through the wishes they leave with the ones they love is the major one in the anime. The other clear one is that for any life lost, a person who shed tears - thus, it's wrong to kill humans. The manga seems to be going on a rather different path, obviously rejecting the ideals the anime came with.

I don't like the anime neither, I HATE how MadHouse did it, but you can't say the manga is boring. if you're referring only to the anime,I agree, but don't say X is boring. Have you even read the manga? X is the most awesome manga ever made and SURELY the best in Clamp's history.

I actually think anime is very well done, considering the task of animating the best manga ever drawn/written that is not even finished. I think they managed to portray the characters pretty well and I even like some differences they made to the plotline.

But I must agree with Rena, there is no way you can dismiss X if you've never tried reading the manga, especially if you're a CLAMP fan ;) trust us, it's worth reading.

Back to the topic though. And this is where I really bow down to the CLAMP girls, that they manage to tackle the most complex themes without trivialising them. The polarity of Ten and Chi no Ryu is, one might even say, prophetic, because I think that in this day and age, any deepthinking human being posed the question, how do we make peace between the destructive human species and the Earth? And I love it that they didn't make it about the fight between good and evel (basically anyone who thinks that didn't understand a thing) because it is not. Both sides have their good sides and bad sides, not to speak about the characters of which every one is painfully complex.

This anime actually has a pretty weak foundation to begin with - just good vs evil which is seen in loads of places - but from that shaky ground it builds itself into a fortress of value and worthiness. I've never watched an anime where the protagonist had to face the choice - and it was a difficult one - between salvation or destruction of earth. X was a thrilling anime to watch and I enjoyed every moment of it.

There is no evil. The characters have their own morals, ambitions, and dreams.

For the most part, all the characters have wishes. Its what the series is really about. Kamui's wish hangs in the balance and it connects with the earth's final calamity or miracle.
