Puella Magi Madoka Magica
| I like them both - but for totally different reasons. It's like being asked to choose between chocolate cake and steak: happily both exist, and you can have both. There's plenty that separates them: Sakura always cheers me up; Madoka makes me cry. Sakura uses a monster-of-the-week format for large portions, Madoka is a tightly constructed story. But all these things have their charms. One thing they do have in common (which I also like) is that there are plenty of antagonists, but no one you could really call evil. Of course, the first two episodes of Madoka have a lot of Sakura homages (e.g. the mysterious transfer student who glares at the main character; the 'mascot' who greets the heroine at the start of the second episode to assure her that no, it wasn't 'just a dream', Madoka's interest in costume design, etc.). I think some people in pushing the deconstruction line about Madoka have seen it as necessary to view its departure from those Sakura-esque beginnings as a rejection of those beginnings, or felt that to praise Madoka they had to diss Sakura. I don't see it like that at all. |
