Today I came across this, while wasting time on 9gag pls don't judge.

http://img-9gag-fun.9cache.com/photo/aYW9qrm_460sv.mp4

And I had no fucking idea, I was surprised that isn't known or popular, like Perfect Blue and requiem for dream.

Also found this while writing this thread:
http://www.discordance.fr/wp-content/IMG/2011/02/Perfect-Blue_Black-Swan.jpg

Anybody know of other stuff like this? it can be the opposite (an anime copying a scene from a western movie or TV show)

I think I heard somewhere, and I'm not sure if it was legit, but Black Swan was something of an adaption of Perfect Blue. Like the filmmaker bought the rights or something.

It's a pretty similar story.

Western directors sometimes get their inspiration from anime, but everything has already been done before so you can't really say that they take inspirtation from just one particulair show.

Walter White is basically a Yagami Light ripoff (besides the fact that he gets development).

Not really..

The shows have similar aspects, but the characters Walter and Light are not really similar at all. They're just in a comparable situation.

That's not even remotely true..

Light Yagamai is not the first protagonist, that goes through the power corruption theme.

It seems too specific and almost identical, to be a coincidence (talking about the Paprika/inception scenes here) not to mention, those scenes aren't common.

I feel like Scott Pilgrim was also influenced by Utena a lot. In the comics there is a poster early on but the ending is super referencing Utena a lot. Gideon is totally parallels Akio in a lot of ways. Plus the whole sword from chest thing. It is been a while since I read the comics but I read them again I bet I find a lot more.

Other than what OP mentioned, two things off the top of my thread.

I know that the Wachowski brothers took heavy inspiration from Ghost in The Shell to make the Matrix trilogy.

And I've heard that the Edge of Tomorrow was roughly based on All You Need is Kill. Well All You Need is Kill is a manga, but I felt it was relevant.

The Lion King Movies are based on shakespeare plays apparently.

And yeah nooo avatar is not like mononoke at all.

Even if Pacific Rim Draws heavily from mecha shows, I still loved it. Much cooler than transformers.

I don't expect Disney to admit they ripped off Kimba, but if you've actually seen some of the Kimba anime, I dunno...

I watched Kimba when I was a kid, I actually thought it was American, made by the same people that made Lion King.

But how about shows like Avatar or The Boondocks being drawn and animated in an anime style?

Steven Universe takes inspiration from DBZ and Madoka Magica. Gems in Steven Universe can fuse by dancing but they must be in sync just like in the case of the fusion dance in DBZ. There was also the episode Garnet's Universe which parodied DBZ.

The Crystal Gems have a few similarities with the magical girls of Madoka Magica.
Even though Steven Universe is slightly influenced by Madoka Magica I like it a million times better. Madoka Magica is just an angsty, edgy, over dramatic mahou shoujo while Steven Universe is just pure fun.

I recently watched Princess Mononoke and this guy looked really familiar

What being from a certain popular western cartoon does he look similar to?

When it comes to the other way around in DBZ Goku became slightly inspired by Superman. The common moe artstyle in anime (huge eyes, little to no nose, big head) was inspired by Disney and Betty Boop.

Kenji Yamamoto's Kai soundtrack was greatly influenced by the soundtracks of popular Hollywood movies. So much so that it got him fired for plagiarism.

Comparison

Kai track Ebb and Flow

Avatar track War

Frieza's 3rd form is also obviously inspired by the aliens from the Alien series

Rui Nagai is my favorite. He rips off a song for The Big O, someone complains, so he rips off another one. The Big O has three opening themes, all of which are based on existing songs. Check this out:

Now check out these.

That cracks me up.
Wow yeah they are really similar.

That reminds me Naruto has a Bond inspired opening

I have heard that certain sci fi anime such as Armitage III and Bubblegum Crisis were influenced by the movie Bladerunner. I haven't seen Bladerunner yet but from the synopsis it does seem like it could have influenced Armitage III (especially Armitage III) and Bubblegum Crisis.

I haven't watched either yet, but apparently for many people Disney's Atlantis: The lost empire is a blatant copy of Nadia: The secret of Blue Water.

It's not. While both are stories about psychological despair, the point of view of Aronofsky is different from Kon's, seeing as well that they stem from different cultural contexts (Mima's story is focused on the perception of failure, Nina's on the pressure towards success, so in the end they are quite antagonistic). However Black swan takes a lot of individual elements from Perfect Blue, aesthetic or scenes, as shown by the video linked by BlueScarf.

Aronofsky did buy the rights, though. But I heard that it was originally to copy the bathtub scene in Requiem for a dream.

Blade Runner is a huge influence on The Big O, too. The Big O has a ton of western influences (Twin Peaks, Batman, Dark City, Blade Runner, Metropolis, Wings of Desire), but I'm working on pretty lengthy blog about that right now. It has way too many to get into specific examples in this thread. The Batman: TAS ones are obvious though, Sunrise did a lot of the animation for that series and it shows.
Big O seems like my type of anime.

offmodel said:
I actually think The Big O would have been the best example of a human/android romance done in sci-fi, had it been finished.
Armitage III to me had the best human/ android romance in anime because of everything that happened between Armitage and Ross. I can't say that for sure though because I haven't seen Big O .

Funny enough, Chiaki J. Konaka wrote Armitage III and most of The Big O (he was the head writer, has credit for all of season 2 and the key season 1 episodes), so I'm betting you'll enjoy it. There are quite a few similarities.
That's great to hear and really piques my interest in watching Big O.

Having watched both I got to say no. They are both based on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea so that causes a lot of similarities. There are a few things that might have been influenced from Nadia but to say it was a straight rip off I think is a bit much.
