Do you think there will ever be yuri like this again in anime?

Now... I'm not complaining about the shift from yuri being female targetted to male targetted. That's fine... I like the fanservicey shit they make now just as much. So I'm not against shows like yuru yuri, koihime musou, or Cross Ange at all... And Devil Lady was an absolutely amazing show targetted to a male demographic. But there was a different tone to the ones I've seen that weren't.

But I wonder if we'll ever see something reminiscent of Maria-sama, Oniisama e..., or Utena again? Maybe... maybe not. I guess there's probably less of a demand for class S type shit like that nowadays. I wonder if that type of yuri is simply dead and that's all there is too it. Maybe one day.

I know nothing about Oniisama e, and I hate the concept of Maria-sama so I don't care about those too. Regarding Utena, I doubt we'll ever get something like that ever again. Utena was a very Ikuhara-esque show and based on YKA, I think he won't ever make something as great as Penguindrum or Utena again.

But we might get something great with yuri again. At least I hope because I don't like the yuri right now at all.

No... Nothing like Utena will ever be made again... Even Ikuhara could not make another anime like Utena. That's like asking George Lucas to make a better movie than Star Wars

Sakura Trick... well... I'm sure the next yuri anime will be just like that. 12 episodes, typical moe art style, SOL, and a romance that doesn't go very far...
I guarantee you the next yuri anime will be like that.

In Euphonium, the yuri vibes were magnificent so yuri is still alive.
All credit goes to Sacred.

as far as yuri goes just read manga, i seriously doubt the mainstream appeal of a mature yuri romance story that goes beyond cute girls kissing

If I had to guess, I would say Citrus is likely to be the next full on yuri anime. Of course, I probably never would have guess Sakura Trick was next to get an anime, I don't know how these things sell in Japan. But Citrus sells pretty well from what I see. I think it's a decent enough compromise between the stuff OP mentioned and Sakura Trick. Not too moe, but it's not exactly a josei either.

Manga has that and a lot of the really sugary stuff doesn't get adapted either. Full on Yuri often doesn't sell well and with the declining anime market, it's a bit risky to adapt them.

Yea... but you can probably take a full on yuri and just spice it up with heavy fanservice, and heavy violence.... but... then again, it would be nothing like the stuff I mentioned

For a bleach fanboy, I never thought you'd even be aware of these sort of anime. Damn

I wouldn't put Utena anywhere near the other shows you listed.

If you mean something like maria-sama but actually going somewhere, yes, I would be fine with that, othewise meh. I would still hate it less than shit like sakura trick.

What I want to see is an actual good yuri being animated. (the full story, not just 1/4 of it)
But it doesn't seem to be happening any time soon.

Well times are changing, I actually like the shift, class S shows seemed to be grounded by the fact that these relationships were treated as just a phase which they would grow out of.

Yea... though in reality, sometimes such relationships are a phase, other times they're not.

But regardless... it was more legit than simply using it for the sake of fanservice and humor (which I don't mind at all by the way), I just like for variety to stay around

Maybe. We never know what they're going to announce next, I mean YKA was something nobody really knew about, but it got an anime anyway.

Thing is, what kinds of yuri being published today (as in currently serialized) can be comparable to those legends? Not many that aren't already finished. Although adapting old manga has become pretty common nowadays. The Japanese just aren't willing to tread in serious, story-driven yuri anymore, because they won't sell as much as something like Yuru Yuri. For them it's just safer to do the Class S bullshit and call it a day.

Now the most we can expect either later this year or somewhere in 2016 is a Citrus anime. It's already got an upcoming drama CD, so it's highly likely.

Well... more shows like yuru yuri is fine... I mean besides Oniisama e..., revolutionary girl utena and Devil Lady, there aren't any "masterpieces" in yuri in general. I mean, Yuru Yuri is better than half the yuri out there... plus Devil Lady is like Noir but only with a little bit more yuri.
I'm fine with more BeeTrain style subtext stuff.

No there won't. The concept has drastically changed from a specific type of drama subtext to shipping all-female shows or lesbians in shows that are clearly a very different genre.
