So... I found an anime that seems interesting. But I am very confused at the fact that there seem to be two animes titled "Haruhi Suzumiya".
There's "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" and "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" (sometimes titled simply as "Haruhi Suzumiya").

Now, I went to do a few searches about both, but it seems both of these are often confused as the same on Google. Now it has me even more confused...

Now, questions time: What is "The Disappearance"? What is "The Melancholy"? What's the difference? Which one should I watch first? Are they even related? Did I miss another "version" of that anime, too?

Please help me shed some light on this confusing predicament...
Thanks!

Watch The Melancholy first. It precedes The Disappearance.

Watch it in broadcast order for the TV show (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu and Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (2009)) first and then Disappearance.

You could theoretically skip and skim through the 2009 season just to save yourself some time. I enjoyed the 2009 season as it aired, but if I watched it again, I'd probably hate it.

Melancholy is the TV series. Disappearance is the movie that came afterwards. The order is TV series then movie, but you could probably skip second season of the series and go straight to the (god tier) movie after 1st season.

Nah watching all of the Endless Eight makes Shoushitsu more rewarding imo, it only got tiring on like the 6th iteration.

That's why if he wanted to at least go through the Endless 8 for a good 4-6 episodes he could just skip and skim. But there are some important things before and after that you might want to pay attention to before you go onto Disappearance.

google some stuff about haruhi watch order.

I'd go with the kyon/author intended order if its your first time.

there is actually like 7 or 8 episodes of basically the same thing re-animated/voiced/everything in the 2009 airing. You can skip them, but I'd watch a few for the effect. (hey, its not like we've got to wait a week for a new episode).

I freggin loved this series so much.

So you dont scerw shit up, thats the order im refering to. http://haruhi.wikia.com/wiki/The_Melancholy_of_Haruhi_Suzumiya_%28anime%29
do watch 12 and 19, and watch what you want in between in whatever order until you start to tire.

The sigh of Haruhi is somewhat stretched out, and im assuming is the segment that others have said is skimmable. I thought it was still decently entertaining, even tho the pacing was fairly obviously stretched out. Do watch Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody (8) tho, its imo the episode most central to the plot.

So, if I understand right; First, I watch "The Melancholy" which is the series, then "The Disappearance", which is the movie.
Anything else I missed?

And I'm still confused about the season thing... Is there a season I need to skip or something?

Sorry for being so stubborn to understand. It's late and I'm tired, and I'm pretty sure I should probably check this out tomorrow. :P

it's as simple as this:
watch this first > and then this second > and lastly watch this

not sure if this is on any other anime site, but when I watched the first two seasons of Haruhi on KissAnime it had both of the seasons scrambled together. This is a problem whether you're watching chronologically or by broadcast order since both orders are rumbled and out of order on the site. I have a list for KissAnime that tells you the correct order if you want to watch by broadcast order (which I heavily recommend - it's the order the show was meant to be watched in, plus it's more entertaining and makes the most sense compared to the chronological order)

Also in the 2009 sequel of Haruhi, you can skip endless 8 - just watch the first episode of endless 8 and the last. You're not missing anything big. Everything in between is just the same episode with very small and insignificant changes. But don't worry about that until you get there

I'd much rather see the whole thing as it was meant to be (broadcast order). So yeah, that would be nice.

broadcast order:
25, 1, 2, 7, 3, 10, 9, 11, 28, 4, 27, 26, 5, 6, 8, 12-24.

don't skip endless eight. Every episode is a tiny bit different, even the way voice actors pronounce things are different, the BGM and colour palette create different feelings. If they could do it, the viewers can at least watch it.
I think it should be approached outside of the story itself as it is not terribly important. I highly recommend to sit through it for your own sake. I think that it IS actually deep but not on the first glance.

Watching the 1st 2 is enough to get the general idea before skipping to the last one.

Pro-tip.

When you go to an anime, there's a "prequel" and "sequel" button below the episode synopsis.

So you don't look baka asking that question again.

What i have to do if it's something like this:
Original(1990) - Prequel (1994) - Sequel (2005) - Prequel of the Prequel (2007) - Sequel of the prequel but a prequel of the original (2011)

Ugh. I just decided to watch this list in the current order it's shown on the website (I hope I'm allowed to link this here?).

Because seriously, I have no idea what's the "Endless Eight" or most of the stuff that was mentioned in this thread. I assume it's a season/chapter/episode or something.

Anyways, at least I have this website with all of the episodes listed, and I'm just going to hope it's in the correct order.

And a big thank you to everyone. You really were all helpful to me. Seriously, I love this forum.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Season 1 --> The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Season 2 --> The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Movie --> The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan

Endless 8 is basically an arc that begins in the final 2 episodes of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Season 1, and continues in the beginning of Season 2. Almost the same thing happens over and over again in these episodes that it's barely worth watching.

Yeah but there are more stories past the anime in the LN.
Endless 8 is also 30 pages in the LN while in the anime it is 8 episodes.

Question time:

I've been watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya on Kissanime. It seems I have watched 14 of 28 episodes (yes, I've just reached Endless Eight and can now understand what it's all about), according to the website.

According to MyAnimeList, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has a total of 14 episodes. So what's happening here, is it because Kissanime includes the two "seasons" or something?

I think you might be watching it in chronological order which makes the separation of the two seasons a little less clear because the 2009 season interleaves with the original 2006 season. The first Endless Eight episode you should watch if you're watching S1 -> S2 should be the 2nd episode of S2.

There was Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (The Melancholy...)
there was a sequel
next sequel was Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu (The Disappearance...)
Alternative was Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu

I really wish they made next series centered on Mikuru! ... Asahina Mikuru no Shoushitsu

or...

Asahina Mikuru no Gaikan!
(The Appearance of Asahina Mikuru)

Get it?

I'd like to see that :)

I wrote this for my wall, might as well drop it here for anyone passing trough.

The original broadcast of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" (only 14 episodes) in 2006 was released in what is known as "Kyon's Order". The episodes did not follow their chronological timeline. The order as is follows plus 1 plus 5, because reasons. In 2009 all episodes were broadcast in order 1-28.

Order they are broadcast with their Chronological episode # /Title
Ep25: The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00
Ep1: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part One
Ep2: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Two
Ep7: The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya
Ep3: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Three
Ep10: Remote Island Syndrome (Part One)
Ep9: Mystérique Sign
Ep11: Remote Island Syndrome (Part Two)
Ep8: Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody (Personal Recommendation not included in the original broadcast)
Ep28: Someday in the Rain
Ep4: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Four
Ep27: The Day of Sagittarius
Ep20-24. The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya1-5 (Another Personal Addition not broadcast)
Ep26: Live Alive
Ep5: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Five
Ep6: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Six
Ep12-19: The Endless Eight. Or at least episodes 12,14,15,19.
Movie: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

So much anime, so little time. Because of the unusual writing of the story, it's possible to shortcut the series and still get the full effect of the main plotline. Chronological Order.

Ep 1-6: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 1-6
Ep 8: Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody
Ep9: Mysterique Sign
Ep 27: The Day of Sagittarius (has some Yuki development, also just a fun ep)
Eps 12, 14 or 15, and 19 of The Endless Eight, 12 and 19 are a must, and at least one in between.
Movie: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

Regardless of how you watch it. Enjoy!
