This may be more practical, but when I ask someone if they like anime, they sometimes say spongebob or how to train your dragon. I understand Anime can mean Animation, so it can mean anything, and not just Japanese anime. But for how popular Japanese anime has gotten, I would assume the person I am asking knows what I'm asking them.

Anime stands for JAPANESE ANIMATION. It can only mean JAPANESE ANIMATION.
Or do you think OVA stands for Original Visual Anime?

The Japanese (you know, the people who actually coined the term) would like to disagree with you on that.

Oh, is that so?
Do you have a Japanese-born and Japanese-speaking specimen at your disposal to confirm that?
Also, I'm curious, while you're at it, ask him if he would call Spongebob "anime" or "animeshon"?
Until you can do that, I suggest you stay with the definition 6 different online dictionaries + common sense tells you.

I take you like examples, I'll give you an easy one:

Carnaval (not Carnival) is a popular Brazilian holiday/festival.
If you google it or search for the term on dictionaries you'll find that it's referred as "Brazilian festival" or something along this lines. That's how the WORLD knows it, and how it's defined.
The word's meaning is deeply related to brazil, but I can use it for other festivities as well - despise what the dictionary says.
I can go to Venice and say "Como é lindo o Carnaval de Veneza" (Venice's carnaval is really beautiful) and that's grammatically correct.
Why?
Because while the world knows Carnaval is a festival of brazil, I can say to my brazilian friend I enjoyed Venice's carnival and not only he will understand what I mean but it also still means the same shit.
I'm not saying their carnival is the same as mine, neither that Carnaval isn't a Brazilian party.

Now change Carnaval = anime, brazil = Japan, Venice = western, carnival = animation.
You see? Do I need to draw?
Unless you're Japanese or speaking Japanese, you're supposed to call ONLY Japanese animation, anime.

Carnaval is not only used in Brazil to mean Carnival, Quebec's winter carnival is called Carnaval de Quebec and Mexico's Carnival is called Carnaval. Carnaval has never only been used to refer to Brazilian Carnival.

You're changing "X1" for "Xa". Use Mexican sombreros if you wish.

Cleaned. Let's remember that name calling, insulting, baiting and abusing are against the forum guidelines.
------------

I remember encountering an argument a few years back about how Avatar could have been considered an anime. The argument continued on until one of the participants said that in Japan, every cartoon is considered "anime". So if a Japanese person were to be watching Sponge Bob or Avatar or Teen Titans or whatever else there is, they would refer to it as Anime, because all that means in Japan is animation/cartoons.

I didn't do much research on this to know if it's true or not, so I can't honestly say much else on this matter.

^true, and they're also called cartoons in Japan.
Japan is a sellout, whenever a big cartoon from overseas comes they immediately name it that and forget that anime = japan animation, just to sell the series, disgusting :(

Actually, I don't think Avatar was anime. It was an amazing show (the best show on nicktoons besides sponge bob) but was it made in Japan?

It is true that in Japanese, anime is used to refer to all kinds of animated works, but non-Japanese works are often designated as overseas anime (海外アニメ) specifically (obviously Japanese works usually have no such moniker attached). This can still range, however, from classic Disney to Avatar to Jackie Chan Adventures to (sadly) fanime.

You can find that information on the internet easily (e.g. check Wikipedia. Or don't if you think it's not valid). People have also posted actual Japanese articles and stuff on MAL that clearly refer to what we consider cartoons as anime. It's too much work for me to go find them again, so you can either take my word for it or just disregard my point because I'm too lazy

lmao! 6 different online English dictionaries. There's different meanings between Japan and the West.

Also, "common sense"? Really?
Does anime sound more like the word "animation" or "Japanese animation" to you? I'll give you a hint: "anime" doesn't have anything close to "Japan" in it.

edit: actually, I didn't provide an actual argument. So you know what?
Here you go
http://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=%E3%82%A2%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A1&ref=sa

What an actual Japanese dictionary will tell you if you look up "anime" (アニメ). Note that Japanese is not stated like anywhere in there

I'd like to point out that MAL is an English website, and there are many more members here from America or U.K. than Japan. I would stick with anime = Japanese animation. I don't speak Japanese.

While the Japanese refer to every cartoon as anime and every comic as manga, there's a reason we use those terms in the West to begin with.

I don't use random words from other languages on an English website for no reason whatsoever. In English-speaking countries the term anime means that it's an animation made in Japan. Using it to refer to any kind of animation is confusing for everyone.

If I say "Spongebob is an animación", is it wrong? No, it's just two languages mixed up. Same goes for anime.

In English, anime denotes animation from Japan.

I've never cared for the distinction, but MAL says otherwise - I've seen enough threads about non-japanese animation closed to realize the puritanism is strong.
Anyone who doesn't hate anime hasn't watched enough anime.

Actually, no, you never said you do until just now. Anyhow, that was quite the argument over something so pointless, just my two cents earlier.

Either trolls, or failures of semi-human otaku beings. Not sure if that's considered a good or a bad thing in society yet, I haven't gone outside to check in some time.
