Romance anime with a dark plot twist?

I'd also like to specify that I'm looking for things that are NOT Horror or Action series. All things considered a traditional romance story but then takes a dark or intense turn at some point. The twist itself can involve Horror or Action in some way, but I'd prefer that to not be a theme in the story otherwise.

Kind of a bizarre request I know, my apologies.

Edit: Just to clarify a bit, I mean "dark twist" as in something dark happens mid-story to change things up. Before that point I'd like it to be fairly traditional in setting.

The funny thing is School Days is actually not far off from what I'm looking for. Of course I'd hope for something better than School Days, and less harem like too.

A lot of these I will be checking out, even if most don't entirely fit what I'm looking for.

WIXOSS and Angel Beats maybe. These aren't really daaaaaark or gore or whatever, but they do have some plot twist that will let you like wut.

That's the exact sort of thing I'm looking for. I don't want something that starts dark, I want something that has a fairly regular story with a dark plot twist.
