Chapter 9: Part 5: How Things Fell Apart Music: Protaku was reliving the story he had been told many times. He was seeing the nightmare that had plagued him throughout his childhood. The weather was fierce. Wind blew from the heights of the city, to the streets and through the alleyways. A sense of sad desperation seemed to seep through the evening lights. Even the stars in the sky seemed to be trickling with tears. A small family of three was running from corner to corner. Their furtive eyes darted back and forth, quickly pacing out which trail to take. Forward? Right? Left? Backwards! They ran backwards, retracing their steps as the sudden mechanical grinding of a war-machine swept past. The father nervously stared at his watch, brow furrowed and sweat forming on his head. "What happened to the backup?" He nervously muttered. His wife meanwhile grabbed the child tightly. "Protaku, take my emblem. It'll protect you in your time of need." The young boy looked up in the sea blue eyes of his mother. "But... dad said that was your protection." He could feel the hopelessness beginning to sap his sense of well being. He turned back to her and said, "Mommy... Are we going to die?" She grabbed his hands tightly and shook her head. "You're going to live. Live and become the new governor." She flinched slightly, as a small trickle of red began to spill from her lips. "Go back and get help from her family. You know who... Walker..." Protaku continued to stare at her with his worried look. "But... I can't do it alone! I need you" Sensing that she had only a few minutes at most left, the mother tenderly gripped her son's hand. Her voice rose as she spoke, then grew weaker as she finished. "I bequeath you the Emblem of Chaos. May it inspire you, and cure your pain". She kissed her son on his forehead, taking one last glimpse at him. She smiled, thinking that Protaku resembled his father greatly. Then she threw him as hard as she could. Protaku flew through the air. He was thrown away from his father. Thrown away from his mother. Thrown away from the end of his future. His last memory before he hit the electrified wall of the building behind him was to curse his weakness. To promise himself that he'd never let something like this happen again. To hope that he wouldn't lose something precious. He hit the wall with a thud, the life draining out of him. A curious black color began to envelop him, cradling him and shielding him. The war-machine that had flown so far past paused, sensing one of its targets disappearing. It rushed back to the last known location of the electrical dent, finding nothing except a trail of blood. Chasing down after the origin, the machine found itself facing the two humans. Code scrolled down its consciousness, overflowing with data. Eliminator 039 commencing duties: Extermination of all human lifeforms within guidelines. Blood detected. Eliminating source of blood. It fought the two, utilizing the latest in technology, and ultimately won. The last line of code that scrolled through its memory banks were as such: Targets eviscerated and eliminated. Self-destruct in progress. The explosion rocked the area, crackling the electric field once more. A black colored orb formed then dissipated, discarding the body of a small boy. Protaku screamed in rage, his yells echoing off the small walls of the dimension. Eyes glowing black, he rushed towards 7star. Then like smoke after a flame, he grew pale and collapsed. His blade clanged on the floor, inches from 7star's face. Protaku's last memory before he faded was one of bitter regret. His mind scrambled, looking for some solution or thought. "Will I once more collapse? Will I be unable to return to protect what I cherish?" Walker's face flickered before him. Then all went black. END |

Chapter 9: Part 6: White Knight Left Alone Music: For a moment there was silence all around. The slight thud on the ground was all that remained of Protaku's presence. 7star had a faint smile on his lips as he stared at the other two combatants. "To be completely honest, I had to hold back a bit with Protaku around." 7star ripped off the white gloves that had been covering his hands, revealing an intricate set of symbols on each hand. With the smile turning into a full grin, 7star spoke: "This is goodbye for real, Zenith and Apex." Silver lines curled and crossed over open space. The weapons lying on the floor arranged themselves, linking and splitting all over. Each part of the room divided itself separately and symmetrically. In the span of an instant, the room shone with silver light. Zenith grabbed his sword, springing into action. He grabbed Apex by his hair, yanking him forward. "We're in over our head. Get us out. NOW!" Zenith yelled. Sensing the urgency in Zenith's voice, Apex began casting an escape spell. "Not a long winded one! Idiot, get down!" yelled Zenith again. Zenith jumped, pulling Apex until they both stood in the center of the room. He activated his blood red gate, stabbing it into the palm of his hand. His blood mingled with the warm red light, giving off a waxy scarlet haze. He strained the remainder of his power to the fullest before calling out: Blood Feud A red gate emanated from his heart, pulsing with each beat. Zenith glared at 7star, noting the silvery arcs activate. He began to worry that he had acted too late. The red arced around him, swarming him and Apex as they were lifted into mid-air. The red orb now began to spin, creating its own warp to another dimension. As Zenith recalled, he was supposed to be at Canicus. Imagining himself arriving somewhere there, he concentrated his power inward. Apex merely stared in awe, the two colors seemingly fighting with each other. The red had changed, the energy shifting to a stellar blue. 7star activated his technique as well: Heaven's Remorse The silvery streams changed into dotted lines where each dot became an arc. The silver arcs flew forward, slicing everything in its path. Stray blades and weapons strewn about were sliced neatly in half, turning into silver powder after being cut. From every direction, the arcs flew. Universally, they reached Zenith's position and exploded. Imagined explosion: When the shock wave from the explosion faded, there was nothing left. Both Zenith and Apex seemed to be gone, as well as any trace of power on either end. 7star shrugged, calling back in the silvery trails. They were absorbed once more into his hand, and the room grew dim. He walked over to Protaku, focusing his energies now on healing. Checking both of their energies, 7star figured that they'd be able to reach whenever or wherever everyone else was soon enough. First though, rest was in order for the two of them. He took out a bunch of crystals, crushing them and creating an oval halo about himself and Protaku. He could only hope everyone else was finding success in their actions. He did have one thing to ease his mind however. Despite Zenith's escape, he had left a massive warp in space. It wouldn't take much energy to recreate a gate and follow after. END |

Chapter 9: Part 6: Pawn Reaches End Square Music: Conq took a deep breath, lungs heaving as he ran alone up the final flight of stairs. He stopped and looked back, grimly taking in the fact that the following footsteps didn't belong to Peace. Conq quickly reviewed what had happened as he rushed upwards. On the 80th floor, both he and Peace had run out of ammo. All that remained were two sets of grenades. Figuring that their only way to escape was to reach the roof and signal for help, Peace had decided to stay back and attempt to hold the creatures off. "Conq, you had better get out of here alive, you hear?" Peace grumbled as he adjusted the sights on his revolver. Conq gave him a worried look, saying, "Are you sure you'll be ok with those weapons that are out of ammo?" Peace frowned, his signature poker face showing no change in emotion. "All my weapons have explosives laced inside, to eradicate any evidence that I've been here or there. I should be fine as long as I can blow enough up. And you're bringing backup right?" Conq nodded, worry still evident from his expression. Peace smiled a bit, rubbing Conq on the head. "Now hurry up. I'm sure we'll meet again sometime sooner or later" Conq just took off, hoping for the best. Peace chuckled a bit inside, wondering if he had that much confidence himself. Honestly, the explosives he had should only last them for the next ten floors. Something had to be done to stall all these inhuman beasts. He heard the pitter patter of continuing footsteps and set off the first charge. Leaning forward, he activated a second explosive round. The creatures regrouped, slithering up the walls and around the corners. Peace slowly walked backwards, activating his third and fourth explosive gun. Down to his last round of his median sized rifle and his grappling rope, he stared into the eyes of the creatures. Contrary to his earlier thoughts, they weren't glazed over or without intelligence. Instead, they seemed to be following one another. They were slowly learning how to deal with his weapons. One had even only lost his arm and kept the rest of his body intact. Peace edged backwards to the window in the back of the room. "Come at me, menaces!" He jumped backwards out of the building, hooking his rope on the window of the floor below. The creatures followed, willingly jumping outside and falling eighty stories to their demise. For a second, Peace thought that he might've lost them all. Then, he heard a thud behind him. Peace clicked the detonator only to realize he had dropped it when he had jumped. "What a way to go." He remained stone faced as the beast jumped at him. Meanwhile running up the 99th floor, Conq heard a bloodcurdling scream from the lower floors. Quietly praying in his heart that it wasn't Peace, he ran up and reached the roof. He scrambled into the center of the roof, trying to figure out how in the world he'd find someone to help. Panting in exhaustion, he collapsed on the ground for a moment. Raising himself up and regaining his bearings, he noticed a silvery gate opening. Filled with hope, Conq reached towards it. "7star, I thought you'd never come!" The figure who exited, however didn't match up to Conq's expectations one bit. Ichi-0900, Shadow-Hunter and well-known bounty hunter strode out of the gate. "What do we have here exactly?" the stranger spoke while twirling his katana. A creature rushed for Conq, only to be exactly sliced in half. "Seems like fun." Ichi said. "I'm glad good ol' Star called me up for this" END |

Chapter 9: Part 7: Rook Vs Enemy Pawn Music: "Blasted confounded creatures! Get away from my men!" Mikhail Herlock was in a foul mood. Even the coin remained silent, not bothering to speak a line of wisdom. His men were dwindling, with few remaining from the original six hundred. At best, he estimated that he had somewhere from two hundred to three hundred left. The creatures relentless strode forward. Another pirate fell, head ripped from his shoulders by one of the particularly large beasts. These new threats resembled mythical creatures of old. They had multiple heads and long stretching arms. "Mikhail Herlock!" Shouted one of the remaining pirate helmsmen. "It seems one of them out there is human. He's walking forward calling for ya." Mikhail froze in his boots, disturbed beyond words. Could this be the mastermind of the crawlers that faced them? Mikhail knew if he wanted to make a bargain he'd have to be quick. The helmsman took a double take, noticing the black spikes that sprung out every now and then to the anger of the creatures. Maybe it wouldn't be best to mention this to the captain... Mikhail on the other hand had rushed backwards, calling out to each man: "All remaining men with pistols, line up with me!" "All of you sorry lot that want to live, line up behind me!" With that, Mikhail tossed his coin. Thought silent, the fact that the coin had landed head's up told him that all was not yet lost. Maybe this unknown figure could be bargained with. Mikhail strode boldly forward into the creatures, never once fearing for his own death. The black cloaked figure strode forward as well, revealing his face. "I'm Null, designated Bodyguard. You're Mikhail Herlock I assume?" The pirate captain nodded, appreciating the greetings. "Welcome Null. I believe this suitcase could accommodate you greatly." Said Mikhail in his most hospitable voice. "Ahhh, the documents which include the outer fortifications. I would be obliged if you handed those over." said Null. Mikhail replied, "But I believe I could assist you more than just these documents." Null raised an eyebrow stoically. "And just how might you help me?" Null looked around at the rag-tag group of pirates, most of whom were weary and injured. Mikhail smiled then, twirling his hand about his sword. "If you could provide us with a vessel, then we'd most assuredly be able to come to your aid in the main battlefield." Null smiled condescendingly, looking at the motley crew. "Well then, I suppose I could lend you a vessel. There is but one condition however." Mikhail beamed, glad that the matter had come to a quick resolution. "And what might that condition entail, Mr. Null sir master." Null waved towards the creatures before speaking, "You'll have to take these monstrosities with you. They've been ordered to follow my commands so they won't attack you -- at least not until you land." Mikhail's smile faded for a moment, the realization crushing his spirit a bit. "But but...surely, there must be another ...way?" Null leaned in, smile plastered all over his face. "There is none." Black spikes began to surround Mikhail, swarming with killing intent. Mikhail gulped, nodding reluctantly. He walked back to his pirate brethren, calmly explaining the situation. Null waved back at him, as a red gate opened behind him. "Zenith... what a pleasant surprise?" Null asked hesitantly. Zenith fell out of the gate and collapsed, with Apex lifting him up. Apex smiled, saying "We're glad to be back. A little assistance Null?" Null shrugged, wondering if this too was part of Apollo's plan. The three all walked through the red gate, heading back to Dissonance Temporary HQ at the cube. Mikhail on the other hand was stuck, waiting for the ship to arrive to carry him and the creatures to that main battlefield. His hope was that his original ship would be waiting for him. After all, Yore and Tonio should be in the area. And if he knew one thing, it was that those of the Herlock blood always returned to meet each other again. END |

Chapter 9: Part 8: Thoughts of The Rooks Music: The nine enforcers had finally landed on the planet of Canicus from their massive star ship, built by Crank. They arrived alone, with a mere squad of 5 backup soldiers, whom at the moment were staying by Walker. Darshan as well remained back. Crank had activated his starting gates, setting up a one way gate from the star ship down to the planet. The first to leave was Walter “Blade” Emory, the third greatest of the Enforcers. He was first to leave, given that of all of them he had the greatest warm-up time. The Enforcers had decided on a quite simple deployment plan. Emory would finish off the weak group troops that Dissonance was rumored to have. Then, Crank would teleport down and create a fortified communication station. The station would have the most distinct signal of all and would provide the position of back lines. After Emory would mop through the initial troops of Dissonance, the #1 Enforcer would immediately take the stage to combat Dissonance's #1 sound. The remaining Enforcers would group up to finish off the other Dissonance members. Emory would engage the bottom tier of Dissonance's Sounds, and regroup with the #1 Enforcer as soon as possible. Walker wondered at the thoughtfulness behind a plan that involved nearly no planning. Although these were extremely capable individuals, she couldn't imagine them being able to work together well. Despite her misgivings, she had assurance in the fact that at the very least: Emory would definitely be able to shred through all of Dissonance's shock troops. Emory landed and so did Crank. Up to the beginning, everything went as planned. Dissonance's undying troops had been slaughtered left and right. Their mangled remains laid strewn throughout the plains where Crank set up a large encampment. It was a square fortress, with mechanically programmed cannons standing at the ready. Robotic soldiers patrolled the areas, shooting the few remaining survivors to pieces with specially engineered organic degrading bullets. Crank was particularly proud of that modification, as it made him feel a bit ahead of Apollo. Emory reached the waypoint, and returned back to base. A swath of land was burned sterile, as gates opened and deployed the remaining enforcers. Each took in the alien surroundings and sensed the area around them. Thirteen particularly strong powers stood out, parallel to their position. The enforcers took into account which had what strength and headed to the different locations, ready for action. Operation In Progress. END |

Chapter 9: Part 9: The Queen Awakens Music: A thought popped into the head of Dissonance's #1 as she walked out towards the battlefield. "How long must this day last?" She frowned, the thought of all the work ahead annoying her to no end. After all, her policy was to use the least amount of effort possible in order to completely eradicate her opponents. Yet, given Apollo's strategies, she surely would be stuck doing most of the dirty work. Every time she had to meet that unpleasant man, he gave off the strangest suspicious aura. On most of her previous conversations with him, he had acted subservient all the while taking detailed notes. He had even managed to get each member of the Dissonance sounds to accept a small communication accessory, which somehow managed to appeal to each in different ways. She herself had received a set of communicators that were built into fashionable and ergonomic shoes. Yet the man couldn't even remember the simplest of details related to each person. He couldn't even remember her name, and it was short enough. Emi Deirdre. She shifted her weight, moving quicker as she began to pick up her pace. Thought she wasn't quite rushing, she was simply aiming to get a quick warm up in. As much as she hated to admit it, Apollo had made her job much easier. Preferring to rely on time to location rather than actual directions, her mood was much improved when she had complete geographic knowledge. She had been given the main location of the Enforcer's camp, at 5 minutes straight left. Apparently, the mechanic of the Enforcers had set up base with some pitiful mechanical cannons and a small barrier. From the details, nothing concerned her. In order to reach her location, she'd have to blaze past the 6th Enforcer. All the details about her target had already been gained. The 6th Enforcer was a weakling who controlled the power of the elements as well as had the power to turn invisible. The only difference from that meddling Governor Protaku was the additional ability to create barriers. "Clearly a person not suited to close combat," she murmured. At the very least, she would be able to take out at least one enforcer, break their communication station, and then end the most powerful Enforcer. Although the day was bothersome, it also was a lucky day for her. She was wearing her favorite blue leather jacket and was holding her two favorite ice-blue daggers. "But enough thought about the details," she thought. Time to end them. Emi flew forward, her steps now becoming massive dashes. She jumped through a forest, snuck through a volcanic plain, and hustled past the remains of a few unlucky mutated soldiers. Reaching her destination, she looked about with fierce determination. The sharp white glint of a unnatural stone structure acquired her interest. Taking a short breath, she jumped forward. Spinning the daggers in hand, she cut a haphazard slash into its outer shell. Her daggers sought the presence of an enemy, moving quickly until it reached blood. The bewildered face of the 6th enforcer revealed itself, as well as the bloody stains of two dagger holes through his heart. "But...how? I.. was... Invisi..." - The words of the 6th enforcer trailed off as he bled to death, dropping his hammer and nails. She yawned and stepped past, wondering why someone like Apollo had even deemed the man a threat. Almost letting down her guard, she stepped forward only to jump backwards. To the outward viewer, there was nothing there, nor even a trace of enegry. However, she could see a deadly trap made of energy similar to the 6th enforcer. Gates to various unsavory or life-threatening worlds had been rigged all around, set to activate if a person were to step or walk near. She sighed, figuring that Apollo had wagered such obvious traps might have caused trouble. Activating a small portion of her ability, she crushed the trap. Cutting through each of them was a pain, but she managed to dismantle all 70 within her rest period of 10 seconds. Emi took a moment to start up running form again and once more headed out. She activated her comms, reporting in the situation and moving forward. ETA to Enforcer Communication Station: 3 Minutes. END |

Chapter 9: Part 10: Expendable Pawns Removed, On with the Game Music: Crank was relaxedly tinkering with the setting on the base cameras. All the enforcers in combat were equipped with state of the art communicators that were built into their weapons. Suddenly, a loud blaring alarm was set off. All the machines in the area as well as the entire fortress was on red alert. Crank skidded forward in his movable chair, examining the cause of alarm. The hammer monitoring Selhání' life detected rigor mortis. "Bah, that failure had it coming." He thought. Crank tried to recall why Selhání' had even been chosen an Enforcer and failed to recall anything. The fact that any of the enforcers had fallen was a mild state of alarm then. He dragged up one of the data files on Selhání', reviewing Selhání' 's powers. Marveling at the fact that someone who could go invisible had already been wiped out, Crank had just about enough time to sit himself at the main control panel when everything went haywire. First, the robotic sentinels patrolling about all went silent. Next, the cannons firing at the supposed intruder all seemed to malfunction and cease functioning all at once. Just as Crank was about to chalk it all up to coincidence, an alarm went off that the outer perimeter's armor had been breached. "Nothing ever goes as planned because nothing ever gets planned," grumbled Crank. He slammed his hand on the big red button marked exit gate. Mid-teleport, he got a quick glimpse at the intruder. "Blue jacket and double daggers...? Something about that seems familiar..." thought Crank once more. He figured he might even be going senile, given than he had just landed down there. He had only been down there for 10 minutes. As he walked out of the gate onto his star ship, he sort of felt oddly out of place. The whole event had been rather disorienting. In any case, this meant he was out of the fight. Given that the only reason for a communication station was for a coordinated retreat, Crank figured that things would work out just fine. "All's well that ends well right?" He said somewhat frustratedly to himself. Crank walked over the spectating room of the ship where Darshan. Walker, and the 8th Enforcer was. "What's the situation?" Crank asked. Walker concernedly looked up at him, saying "You're bleeding all over." Crank wobbled a bit, saying "I am?" Darshan rushed over, helping the weakened old man reach the medical bay. Walker returned her attention to the monitoring screen, watching over the progress of the combat. Emory had engaged a number of Dissonance special ops teams, ranging from assassination crews with snipers to bounty hunters with electric net traps and beam sabers. The #1 Enforcer as well had cleaved his way through most of his enemies, heading forwards towards the Dissonance base camp. He was attended by his second in command, who was communicating back and forth to get details on the large scale battle. She relayed the news about the 6th enforcer and on losing the communication station. General sentiment was for the main three to continue their operation with the remainder of the enforcers regrouping on the ship for a new vantage point. Once the #1 enforcer confirmed Dissonance's main base, then they could all be sent down through gates in order to siege the encampment. Walker just wondered if whatever had taken out Selhání' was so small a threat to ignore it. True, the strongest energy reading was coming from the location to the north, but something seemed fishy about the whole matter. And above all, Walker wondered if any of her friends would show up eventually. The absence of Protaku bothered her the most... END |

And I thought the previous day was really long. I'm in the middle of rereading at the moment so I can't comment on that. I guess in times like these things happen really fast so it really could be just one long day or several restless ones. On a side note I appreciate the story more through the reread, some things are making a bit more sense now that I know what happens down the track. Or maybe I'm just not up to the confusing parts yet. |

Heya still reading this! I'm super slow on things when I really should be faster but I find I need to be in a certain mood to read these. I'm on chap 9 ish and things are looking very interesting! I hope I can finish it soon! edit; got it all read finally, can't wait to see how this all concludes! |
