| Tiger & Bunny - Entirely different plot but shares the fact that they both have a moment of crisis in need to have someone to help, the difference is that NHK begins with it while Tiger & Bunny uses it as a final trial. Beck - The main character is a really average person that in contrast to many other anime mc would be definitely pathetic, at least looking from the start. Similar to Planetes's protagonist, it is almost like a self-improving journey where he would get encouragement to bring forth his courage. Aura: Maryuuinkouga Saigo no Tatakai would fit the theme you want too. |

| Not exactly what you want but your description reminds me of the relationship between Kyon and Haruhi so I'll recommend The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Haven't seen it but a + on that Tatami Galaxy |
