Why are there so many complaints about fanservice when there's just as much manservice too?

Fanservice needs to focus more on the curves and boot.

Like Rail Wars and Bebop did.

Because that's bull crap, females are much more attracted to the distinctly masculine parts of males, those being the bulge and male butt shape, which are focused on significantly less than female butts and breasts. Muscle, being something both genders have, isn't as alluring in comparison. By your logic, if a woman's muscles were the primary focus compared to her butt and breasts, that should be enough fanservice for males.
The reason there are more male anime fans is because there are mostly males working in the industry, so cater to what they want. You know how we get more female fans, have more women work in anime to even out the fanservice. I know that's not all females want from anime: I'm sure more action shoujo would be welcome by female anime fans, but we are strictly talking about sex appeal.

its called double standards, people in the US don't care if men are sexy but theres outrage if women are, its fucking ridiculous

if we want equal rights, everything should apply EQUALY to both sexes

men with their shirts off = no one cares

women showing skin = WHAT ARE THEY DOING?

Fanservice is needed, asking for less.. pfft, those people need to get a grip.

Generally, people just need to sip tea or coffee while watching, eat a cookie and chill the fuck out.

'Fanservice' also includes sexy men sporting their abs. However, we're more familiar with the heterosexual point of view, we notice the sexualization of females more.

Maybe because you're a damn liar, OP.

The very fact that you and all the other users who agree with the premise of this thread only ever use Free! to support their argument pretty much goes to show that they could hardly name a show (that's NOT an otoge or yaoi mango adaptation) from the top of their head that provides sexual fanservice that's clearly oriented towards a female audience.
However I'm sure even the most hardcore fujoshi out there could give you at least ten non ecchi animu that do this for the male audience without even thinking hard about it. And from memory (even though that's not necessarily related to fanservice), some of the most virulent and common complaints I've heard on this site were about male characters (especially mains) acting a little too 'gay'.
So yeah, excuse me if I have a hard time believing in that double standard everyone seems to be crying about.

But if I'm wrong and the amount of sexual fanservice for women is even remotely close to the amount of fanservice for men, then please provide me with a recommendation list because I'd be glad to watch these shows you're talking about.

Any reverse harem usually has a lot of fanservice - most sports shows tend to have a fair amount too, let's also include series like D.Gray-man and Owari no Seraph since they have a large female demographic - I probably couldn't give you 10 non-ecchi anime that do fanservice ONLY for the male audience.

The problem is that fanservice is a large, wide collection of things - not nude guys and girls, it kind of extends beyond that. Loads of the series which seem to be female oriented have two male characters that get right up in each others fave and stare at each other a lot - that's still fanservice really, it's catering to them...fanservice for males is usually more blatant though, showing skin, erotic noises etc - but again these can all be found in series aimed at females too.

I would never go so far as to say that there is an equal amount of male to female fanservice, but I do think that there a noticeable amount of female fanservice which has grown over the years. It's also worth pointing out that fanservice is really more often used as a punch line to a joke, rather than eroticism for the sake of eroticism - For example, Shokugeki no souma uses both male and female fanservice as a joke and not much else. Again, in that series there are clearly more instances of female fanservice but...I mean part of that is just because the male chest isn't seen as being as inherently erotic as the female chest - which is a problem with society, not so much anime.

What I don't understand more is why fan-service like girls with large breasts is considered bad, especially when sexualized. If it was done with regular people there'd be no complaints, but since it's anime, it's perverted. Look at good ole' Game of Thrones. They have sex just about every episode in that show, yet no one complains about "fan-service" or how women are shown in the show.

I agree that things are slowly starting to change, I originally wanted to point it out in my first post but after I as done ranting I forgot lol
Maybe you couldn't name them but there's quite a ton of it out there: just this season there's Grimgar, Dimension W, Dagashi Kashi, Musaigen etc. you catch my drift.

But honestly, it seems your reponse is in line with what my argument rather than going against it, really. I know fanservice is not sexual per se, and that's why I made sure to properly qualify it (because even though the OP didn't do it, one can safely assume this is the type of fanservice he was talking about). To me reverse harem is to put in the same category as 'regular' harems or ecchi anime: they're made serve their target-audience with (usually) sexual content to , so they don't really count.

And about what parts of the male body can be viewed erotically, I can assure that the chest is not the only one. @EricBreaux already talked about it in his post; so yeah, I would hardly see that as a valid excuse.

tl;dr I'm not saying sexual fanservice geared toward either gender is bad in any way. I just wish people who discuss this topic would stop being intellectually dishonest.

Well OP, it's because it just so happens that there's FAR more fanservice for men than women in anime. I mean, look at all the ecchi anime that come out every season and tell me that it's not 90% for men. That being said, I think both male and female fanservice are equally as off putting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (with some exceptions of course. Hehe). There's a way to portray sexuality right, and it's not by cramming risque shots of every attractive character's panties/abs/cleavage/muscles just for the purpose of appeasing the viewer.

Oh well, it's not like any of this will change whether we like it or not. Anime studios will continue to produce what their targeted audience wants if it's what makes them money. I doubt fanservice will be going away anytime in the near future, if ever.

After a few first posts, I got an impression that pretty much everybody here is being intellectually dishonest and (not very) secretly laughing at what they write. This probably has something to do with the fact their (potential) opponents aren't very honest themselves. Well, that's MAL for you.

GoT is supposed to be a tragic show where everybody is some kind of evil. Or something like that, because I didn't bother to watch it based on what I heard about it. As a result, no matter how bad the characters are, it doesn't reflect on the morality of the show as a whole.
(that's a really good get-out-of-social-criticism card, I'd say)

I don't know about "enough", but women's legs are quite attractive, and often showed off in anime with their short skirts. The problem is, it's not that unusual to see nice legs and short skirts IRL, so it doesn't give much fanservice.

Because those are shows aimed at men in the first place and the fact they don't wear shirts isn't intended to sexualize them? You have shows like Free!, yes, but Goku's shirt ripping is not a sexual gesture in DBZ. It's a male power fantasy. The story doesn't zoom in in the middle of important scenes to show Goku's rippling abs or dick bulge in his shorts, lol.

I've read almost all the replies to this discussion on from my judgement it seem that people hate fan service because there isnt enough man service. Ive seen a lot of "That is as close to manservice","there isnt as much manservice in the world compared to fan service".

Thats the main reason I would believe, They want to see more.

All these harem/ecchi shows put some fujoshi characters fantasizing about the 2/3/few male characters of the entire show.

Haganai - Rika(quite disgusting btw);
Utawarerumono False Mask - Rurutie;
Oreigaru - Hina;
Oreimo - Sena;
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - Fujiyoshi Harumi;
etc, etc, etc...

I always imagined that man-service was a subset of fanservice (in the sense that fanservice was not gender specific).

In any case, since you brought up Fairy Tail and Bleach which are shounen series, how meaningful is it to discuss manservice when most of the audience is male?

Society arguably sexualizes women more than men, as a result of which we subconsciously notice 'awkwardly dressed' women more than we do, men.

I think it's because when it comes to women, things are just a bit too risque compare to men - considering that we have waaay more private body parts. It's with the people too, they should just learn to shut up and appreciate. Let the ladies have their muscles, let the men have their oppais.

The true problem is that if we over sexualize things too much and lose touch. Looking at you - thousand seas of fanservice/manservice anime releasing...

This is important. Aside from Free! there is no famous anime that has fanservice for women.

Ecchi is huge. Haganai, High School DXD, Date A Live are all pretty well-known. How many fanservice-for-females are famous?

Anime is all about pandering at times as far as art and attractiveness goes. Even in anime where the audience isn't necessarily women, there may end up being many bishonen characters for multiple demographic appeal. Likewise some anime with female fanservice may have a good looking or cute guy among the cast. It depends, though.

If we're talking about Bleach and Fairy Tail, those anime are targeted at male audiences so men ripping off clothes at the course of the battle are no big deal. It could be seen as an indirect fanservice for women but could not be interpreted entirely as fanservice.

Whereas the only relevant manservice anime out there is Free. Even shoujo and reverse harem don't have that much manservice in them. Bless KyoAni for Free.

Please, the amount of anime with fanservice is so much greater than the amount of manservice. It is not even a viable comparison. In fact, the reality is that much of the community will call something "manservice" or "Shoujo AI" just because the series has handsome males.

Well likewise lots of people are quick to draw the "fanservice!" card, just because a female character is wearing a skirt for example, doesn't make it automatically fanservice.

More often than not, it is fanservice since those skirts are being used to do a "pantsu display," which is quite disgusting. This is clearly pandering to the taste of overly meninist pigs.

What's funny is that shoujo anime tends to always have hot girls, while male-fanservice anime tends to have empty male designs. Look at magical girls like anime like Mermaid Melody and then look at all the harem. Somehow shoujo goes both ways.

You do realize that meninism isn't a real thing, right? It's satire taking the piss out of feminism.
