Why aren't we seeing anime in a first person point of view?

Visual novels are almost always in first person so it's not a particularly foreign concept to the Japanese. IdolM@ster pulled it off (for a bit) and it was probably the most interesting part of the series. Why aren't we seeing anime in first person? It would wholly change the way we describe "self-insert" characters.

I would definitely be interested in how that might turn out...

There's not many films or ordinary TV series in first person either. Or many books written in second person for that matter.

Cloverfield is one of the worst movies in existence.

I think its probably just hard to do right if its first person the whole time, we don't have very many movies/TV series that do first person perspective anyways.

Probably pretty hard to animate right, especially if you're going for the more realistic route. I wouldn't mind one, I think one has the possibility to be great, especially if they use binaural sound. It would be much easeir and sort of a better way to give you more of a perspective regarding height, with like child roles, and could possibly make a great horror anime especially if they use binaural sound for that.

1st person view only works in vidya games because you're the one in control. You don't get that in anime, well besides this which was an amusing gimmick for FullMetal Alchemist (spoilers)

The second season of SAO did it in a few scenes and I thought it looked cool. It probably would get old soon though.

And yeah, if Cloverfield is anything to go by, it's not a good route to take.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

With visual novels you usually have some choice in what happens. With a show it would be hard to actually insert yourself because they would be choosing for you. It would be more like looking through someone else's eyes than looking through your own. Though all flaws aside, I think that a first person anime viewing experience would be pretty interesting.

It would be boring.

It would be too difficult to animate.

If it's not somehow part of the narrative device (plot relevance) it's not needed.

Please.

It's not that it can't be done, but it's not interesting enough to keep in a long run in mediums that rely so much on visual information to introduce and develop the characters or the story. Other than that, I'm sure it has been done many times already for short sequences and meta jokes.

Nah thanks. It'll look dull after a while. First person is only occasionally an interesting angle, doing a whole show in it would look boring after like five minutes. plus, any conversation scenes were be just a drag.

It would be expensive to make a whole show like that. It requires to animate not just the characters but the whole backgrounds too. Most often the background is still and drawn separately from the animation of the characters.
In 3D video-games it's easier to make because the backgrounds are ready, preconceived and the point of view of the camera can be placed anywhere.

Anyway, it's the pretext to post this wonderful piece of Tezuka. One cut and 4000 drawings.

Did it seem particularly high budget? If a hentai can pull it off I think a good trip A anime studio can pull it off. I feel like it would be too experimental to make a profit though so I doubt any studio would try

It wouldn't be a problem in a low budget production like this hentai or in a slideshow, the animation is very limited in the first place.

It's probably very hard to animate, at least harder than regular stuff. Need to pay much more attention to realistic camera movement and angles etc...

Try Flag if you like that kind of stuff, it has that kind of feeling because the whole narrative is done through the lense of a camera.
I probably regret this post by now.

So true, also I agree with other people, that it would just be boring and weird. I find it more interesting to watch the people interact than actually being the person.

Cloverfield and....that other superhero movie Chronicle?

Both of them were just bad, but....iono. I would just think it's hard to pull off well.

What are you talking about?

Chronicle is like one of the few decent films as far as footage films go; the other one being End of Watch.
It even references Akira.

I'm like 99.9% sure you didn't actually watch it.
Please do!

End of Watch too.

And yes Cloverfield, Paranormal Activity, etc. and most found-footage films in general are bad.

An anime shot entirely in first person would only be relatable to a select group of people. Since you are seeing everything from the main characters point of view, you are pretty much expected to relate to that character, because for all intents and purposes, you ARE the main character. If you don't relate the the actions and personality of the MC, it would just disconnect you from the entire experience.

Of course, if you managed to make a first person anime where the MC is just a spectator watching something unfold, it could work very well, but it would be hard to construct.
