I'm looking for something with a really dark atmosphere, and has a really strong force pulling you in, where you say after an episode, "I must watch more!"

lemme hear what you got, thanks!

EDIT: for those who are recommending rainbow, the first half is exactly what I'm looking for

I 'm still recommending Black Jack 1993 OVA but Terra E http://myanimelist.net/anime/2158/Terra_e... might be more what you are looking for because it isn't episodic and has a main story that pulls you in . On the downside though it doesn't have a super dark atmosphere.

It's not like Shinsekai, but it's a dark story hidden in lightheartedness.

Mawaru Penguindrum.

These as well:
Serial Experiments Lain
Texhnolyze

I'm not sure if I'd recommend Texhnolyze considering what he said (the part in bold). Depending on the type of the viewer you are, you will either find it boring as hell and a painful watch or really enjoyable.

Anyway, @OP, just check out the first episode, and if you didn't like it then it's probably better if you drop it.

ghost in the shell stand alone complex - extremely compelling. It has a similar structure to x-files in that there are some stand alone episodes and some that tell a serialized story. The stand alone episodes are not really stand alone though as you learn more about the characters and world. I dont normally marathon anime but this series really drew me in. it seems you like dubs, and this has one, though i did not watch it dubbed.

+1 penguindrum - starts slow, but around episode 7ish it gets awesome and stays that way til it ends.

tokyo ghoul - I thought it was pretty fking great.

[size=200]RAINBOW: NISHA ROKUBOU NO SICHININ
Why are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel my leg... and my arm... even my fingers. The body I've lost... the comrades I've lost... won't stop hurting... It's like they're all still there. You feel it, too, don't you? I'm gonna make them give back our past."

dark shit huh?

Anime:
-Another
-Wolfs Rain
-Blood+

+1 Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku
+1 RAINBOW: NISHA ROKUBOU NO SICHININ

Manga:
-Dragon Head - THIS is dark as fuck!
-Higanjima
-I am a Hero
-Gantz (Theirs an anime but Id say Reading the manga is better)
-Tokyo Ghoul - TOPS the anime in every way possible. Anime while good, was rushed as hell. I found out only after reading the manga. so much content cut out, arcs and scenes switched around, many unnecessary changes and ceratain characters are much colder and slightly darker than their anime counterparts. ditch the anime in my opinion. The OP and ED tho are god damn insane tho! perfect fit for it.

Webtoons - You wont find most of these on MAL:
-Afterschool War Activities
-Dead Days
-Distant Sky
-Hanged Doll (bad translation but a better one is currently in the works. 7 chapters up for better TL)
-Superior Day (Hanged Doll Sequel) - I read this 1st lol had no idea about Hanged Doll
-Trace
-Shards Of Sin

While not EXACTLY what you're looking for, try Kaiji. It's dark and deals with a real life problem.
