Trying to start my collection, i am not quite sure where to start (not even sure if i am allowed to mention light novels here).

I don´t if i should start buying Spice and Wolf Light Novel or the One Piece manga, SaW because i loved the anime and wanted see where it goes after the anime, and One Piece well because it is One Piece and it seems pretty good.

In the end i think it comes down to preference but what do you guys think?

Buy the spice & wolf Light novels. 17 volumes and finished whereas One piece is almost at 80 volumes and still far finished. So you can on top of SPice & wolf buy lots of other nice things, whereas if you buy One Piece you won't be able to buy anything else for a while.

Furthermore, Spice & wolf is far better as a novel than One Piece is as a manga. So no brainer here.

At the current rate the final Spice and Wolf volume will be released in English on April 19th 2016.

This hasn't yet been officially announced, though.
There is no such thing as shit taste. Only idiots who think everyone should have the same taste as they do.

No not really the Light Novels are not completely translated in english yet (Officially)
I also disagree on a that second statement, SaW is a completely different thing than One Piece, dont compare Cucumbers with strawberries.

S&W is finished in japanese since years ago so it IS finished. It's only a matter of a short time before the translation catches up, like kuuderes_shadow said. Whereas in One piece's case, the japanese version is not finished at all and is already at 80 volumes. It may takes 10 more years before One piece finishes in japan, not event talking about the english official translation.
Also, I compare the two because that's the op question. If you don't like the comparison, complain to the op, not me x).

Manga for episodic, comedy stuff.

LN for serious stuff.

However, for LN, I need to watch the anime first. I can never get into a LN unless I see the anime first.

It depends on whether you re-read books or not. I usually don't re-read books, so I'd opt for manga. For example, I have three volumes of the Haruhi novels, but I haven't re-read them once, while I've re-read all the manga I own at least once or twice.

I prefer Light Novels, being able to picture a scene in my mind, slowly adding more details as i read each new sentence... i really like that.

Plus a few other things like lenght and dialogue (or should i say text?) structure

LN are "real novels" you know. Well, rather, you don't know, obviously. Man, trying to look cool can really backfire at times.

Don't mind that kind of remark; besides, it's true that that kind of LN exists. Just like erotic and pornographic literature sells quite good in the west, erotic and shallow literature can also be found in any category of novels in Japan as well. Only idiots would look down on novels as a whole just because of this anyway.

I'm just kidding, don't worry. It's sad that most anime adapted from LN are trashy.

Well, yes prose it's prose at the end of the day, but there's a difference between Welcome to the NHK! and Brave new world.

I'm not trying to be cool, stop projecting, light novels are mediocre and it's true

As far as SF goes Biscuit Frankenstein is better than brave new world. So no, sorry. Trying to compare a very reputed western novel to a random LN isn't going to prove your point. Western novels have stuff like twilight. If I were to use your way of thinking, twilight is far bellow a lot of LN I've read so western novels are shit compared to LN. See?

Most light novels are your typical romance comedy like Maburaho (known for having lots of ecchi) and I do not see a shoujo or josei equivalent in a light novel. I prefer manga most of the time.

True, it's always supernatural/fighting/fantasy with ecchi...
That's why I wrote one that is different.
The writer who penned Clashing Feelings. You can buy the light novel on Amazon.

Err no. Rom com isn't especially more frequent in LN than other genre. Nor it is especially ecchi oriented. Just like any literature, there are rom com, and there are novels with erotic content indeed, but that's only a part of the whole stuff published.

As for shoujo/jousei, obviously there isn't. Just like ther eis no shounen LN either. Shounen/shoujo are demographic tag that are only used in manga. They aren't used in anime, and aren't used for novels either.
It doesn't mean that there is no girl/woman oriented LN around. They are there, although, minus a few exception, it seems like they don't sell as much as boy- oriented and no gender oriented novels.

As for LN with a female lead character, there is a lot of them around. And I actually think (maybe I was just lucky) that it's easier to find good titles among those than among those with a male lead character.

Here are some websites of light novel labels that are specifically aimed at women.

Get the light novels for Spice and Wolf if you really love Spice & Wolf. If you love to read additional details, the LN is a great addition.

If you are starting your collection anyway, I have a feeling you'll be buying OP no matter what. It's best to buy that S&W first while waiting for One Piece to keep piling up. That's because Viz might do boxed sets/3-in-1s for OP, and they can be pretty cheap deals.
