Yeah. Think of it as Groundhog Day (If you've seen the movie. Is there anybody in the world who hasn't? Seems to be on TV a dozen times a year.)

Each arc is a 'reset' and a different turn of events. It all starts to make sense the longer you watch.

Groundhog Day is an amazing movie :p

And ......that's what I was hoping; I too am watching Higurashi at the moment .. but it confuses me a lot. I feared I needed to rewatch it eventually to understand stuff, but I've still had some hope left that it would make sense at some point in future episodes!

Dont you think this is what happened in between? To me it seems like they have rewinded it to before the festival, to explain things. i dont think the story "resets", they just fill in the holes.

Every arc, time resets to before the festival and a different story is told. The sequel, Kai, really makes this clear, so if anyone is still confused after finishing the first Higger, it really explains it. While posing more questions, of course.
edit: rereading that, it seems kind of vague, but I think if I said something to make it more clear it would be a spoiler. Just know that each story is independent from the others nearly 100% of the time.

This episode is so confusing it just makes me want to watch more to find out what's happening. It doesn't seem like it's back in time. Maybe its a different scenario of things to show how it could have ended differently perhaps?

Ahhhgh, this is very confusing...

Some people are saying that this is a story that's not related to what we saw in the first chapter...but I don't get that. It seems more like, what someone else said...it's sort of "filling in" for part of what we didn't see last chapter....

Hmmm....well next ep....hopefully some clarity...

Alright then. I guess each "reset" will go on for 4 episodes, in a contineous loop, but with each new "reset" different events happen.
I expect to see more bloody scenes then! xD

from wikipedia:

In the Higurashi games, there are several story arcs, the original eight of which are referred to as either Question arcs or Answer arcs. The Answer arcs generally recapitulate the events of the corresponding Question arc, but from a different perspective, using the change of protagonist to solve various mysteries and come to a different conclusion. Each of the eight original games for the PC represented separate arcs of the overall storyline. Although apart from the main Question/Answer relationship the stories of the arcs are not directly connected, a multitude of parallels exist which allow the observant reader to gain extra insight into the mystery.

It's not that confusing. I'm guessing every four episodes is a new scenario and everything is reset. Everyone's still crazy though.

I was hoping that they were going to show different sides of the story. One chapter on what Mion experienced from the first chapter. I guess that this sort of works.

okay WTF!

So there's this whole "different arcs" thing going on? I'm not sure how I feel about that. I didn't intend to watch an anime that starts anew every 4 episodes but I'm still interested in how it all turns out. I just hope that each new plot ties together in the end, like some weird ass horror movie.

Good thing I read the replies though cuz it would have made me even more confused if I just kept on watching. I initially thought it was either deja vu or what happened inbetween.

Well first off I loved the disturbing knife stabbing in the very beginning and that insane laughter (^_^)

Though WTH!? So everything is back to zero again and we'll get the please to see another disturbing twist and blood bath with the same characters?

Hope they aren't images of some real life persons the writer knew when he was young, would make me think he really, really hated them, having them suffer and die over and over again =P

Wtf, the stories are not even related? That sounds kinda lame imo. =/ But Ill keep watching it and see what happens.

This clears most of the confusion up, thanks. So basically this 26 episode series is made up of continous time loops involving several parallel universes which all connect together in the end to tell one final, complete story of events... The protagonist(s) role's differ in each respective "chapters". Since it was mainly Rena's actions in the first chapter; I'm guessing Mion/Shion will be used as a catalyst for all the gory stuff happening in this chapter.

From what I can guess, each chapter is a different scenario (which is stated in the description on the MAL page). So yeah, it does kind of "reset" but there's going to probably be some sort of tie-in of all the scenarios at the end of the series. Also, the very first few seconds of each scenario seem to show you how that one is going to end.

That's really helpful. I was confused.

Um... the very first part of the episode is nuts! It totally shocked me that she was stabbing her own head. It gives me the shivers. I've never watched anime like this before though, so that might explain it.
