that's true. there ARE extreme law abiding people out there who only know about the whole saga from Odex's point of view. and they'd probably want the "thieves" to be caught because of all their conservative insecurities. but well. what're the chances of these people being on MAL? almost none...the result's probably gonna be a landslide "No" unless someone decides to be cheeky. nice attempt to clear up the little mess from the first poll, ahockz. but i must say that "do u support odex" and "do u think odex is right/wrong" are actually slightly different. it's possible that someone might think that odex is correct (legally or whatnot), but wouldn't support odex out of self-interest. maybe "do u think odex is correct" without the "wrong" part would be better. |

Wait, so does that mean you TriBnitylade voted a no??? If that is the case, then now we have eight members posting in this topic, and 8 total votes in the poll. Including that one yes vote. If we were to assume all eight of us voted, that would mean one of us is the culprit of you-know-what. Oh noes~ |

nah, the trick is to play with words. if u read my posts, i've never said that i downloaded anime myself. when the results of odex vs pacnet came out, i didn't say "we're not safe", i said "anime downloaders are not safe". if they don't have conclusive proof that u own copyrighted anime without paying for it, you're pretty safe, i'd think. (what happened to that old forum, anyway...did it get deleted?) oh but that doesn't imply that i download copyrighted anime and i'm trying to hide it of course! i'm just giving advice to those downloaders (if any) who're worried! :D |

erm. they can only sue us for defamation if we say something untrue about them and it harms their reputation. but seeing how the audience on MAL is so small and so against odex already, they wouldn't be able to ask for much and it wouldn't be worth paying for a lawyer just for a miniscule amount of cash from us. so the answer is "likely not". anyway i don't think you were talking about this. :x if you're talking about suing us for downloading their copyrighted anime, then no, i don't think they can do it anymore ever since they sorta lost to pacnet. all they can do is pass your particulars to the studios in japan and you'll have to wait and see. although they might still be able to send u a letter threatening to take you to court like evil businessmen. they could be lying about it, but u could settle it out of court by paying up if you don't want to risk it. though i think u'd win if the particular episode still isn't out in singapore. i've got 14 odex anime boxes myself. won't be much help though sigh. no choice but to download safely i guess...avoid all the licensed anime and all that stuff (especially if u use bittorrent). i know of ways to get licensed anime but of course that doesn't mean i use those methods. :) |

@TriBnitylade oh and i don't THINK it's illegal to download copyrighted anime in singapore. it's just that downloading copyrighted anime gives odex/japanese studios a good reason to try to take u to court. just between u and odex/studios that is. and if the japanese studios did take u to court u'd probably lose out too. so it's just paying money to them and paying the legal fees if that happens. it's a lot though, don't get me wrong. if it's "illegal" it'd mean that it goes "against the law", meaning stuff like police, prosecutors, fines, jail terms, etc. odex was trying to make it illegal to download anime (as in get the judge to admit as such) but i didn't hear anything about it happening. as far as i know only selling pirated anime is considered illegal. hmm but i could be slightly mistaken. does anyone know if downloading music, for example, is strictly considered illegal in singapore? i spent about 15minutes searching it up on Singapore's Ministry of Law website and the Singapore Law Society webby but couldn't find a thing about it. mostly they just talk about prohibited websites (mostly pornography). |

downloading music is definitely illegal in singapore, however they only caught those who used limewire or other clients. they have yet to caught others and btw there are countless of music downloader in singapore. my friend download chinese music through those website like haoting or baidu more worse he download album by album lol aiya the safest way is DDL. XD |

@nero DDL is safer. but it still CAN get u into trouble. what if odex/jap studios got permission from local police to raid a website's servers like they did with fourzerofour.com? would it be possible to check (or to demand from the server administrators) which IP addresses accessed the server? or they could search online for "DDL" and find this forum on MAL by accident. and voila, there's this person called "nero", and he certainly implies here that he downloads copyrighted stuff using DDL. or at least he doesn't deny it...maybe we can find out who's his friend here who downloads streamed chinese albums from haoting probably using a download manager, or just add this to our growing list of proof that haoting and other streaming sites should get closed down...hmm better take a picture of this website before any posts get deleted... sorry about that. don't think that'll happen. :) i think. :| anyway i might sound like your boring old parents here, but u can never be too careful on forums and blogs. even one as relatively obscure as MAL. if you're trying to make it big, things like these can come back to haunt u sometimes if you're not too careful. i'll admit that my own precautions probably won't be very foolproof too (not that i'm trying to hide anything >.<). but we're all pretty young here, so let's not let things like these destroy our futures, huh. |

nah u will never know what's gonna happen the next minute maybe there is really people tracking DDL or maybe someone like me who say out loud that lm downloading things through ddl. but then i have already quit on downloading (: so to those people who is still downloading, its better to be more careful with their words in forum or other website. |

As of this forum post, i'm the 2nd person who voted "Neutral" in the polls. Can't really "blame" them that much if they push the blame of their poor sales to downloading... it's juz that they are too blind to their own faults... This saga is juz a stupid act by them, i don't mean to insult but they are actually killing themselves by getting rid of people who actually watches anime in SG. Though i believe that they should try to do something about downloading, but not to the extent of not giving people any warning at all. They should juz be the exclusive japanese dvd import distributor or something along that lines instead of licensing anime. I think this way, they'll at least have more people wanting to buy their stuff... |

@twilightWizz erm. sorry...i think you would've had good reason to say you're neutral for the previous poll. but not this one...i think you're a little mistaken. "should we blame Odex"/"is Odex wrong" is a little different from "do you support Odex IN THIS SAGA". this saga, of course, means this whole episode of them trying to get downloaders' IP addresses and threatening to bring people to court in order to receive thousands of dollars from them. so, phrased in this way, would u really not care either way if they were to succeed in getting all the IP addresses and succeed in suing every suspected downloader in singapore of their money? and then they'd be happy that no one is downloading anymore and go back to the current status quo - where most anime titles are licensed but NOT released on vcd/dvd...or they'd release it on TV for one run and if you missed it it's gone for good...and the titles are poorly subbed either way. the thing is, i actually support an end to downloading, personally, and would be happy to buy dvd boxes from odex. PROVIDED they were of decent quality, decently priced (about $2-3 per episode) and most of all are actually AVAILABLE for purchase. but with respect to this saga, i definitely wouldn't support them and would try my best to persuade the neutrals (yes, dark_koji, you too!) because i think Odex winning in this saga would be very unfair to us anime viewers and would be a classic case of misusing the power of the law. |

@greckoboy Hmm... Having studied about the basics of Intellectual Property, Media & Ethics (IPME) law as my elective, in which the particular chapter, took up less than 2 chapters... The shocking truth of SG having no privacy is revealed to all those who had originally thought that SG's quite a safe country in terms of security... and fyi, copyrights are like trademarks, patents... they ARE protected... and what's worse is stuff like anime or even just still photographs which you take using your handphone... are automatically protected... it's juz a hassle trying to prove that it belongs to you, tat's why we don't see many court cases about IP stuff unless protecting things like trademarks or patents... So, in actual fact... SG isn't really that safe in terms of guarding the public's info. Everything that's important is really reading the contract you have signed... (Contract laws really suck, coz even the grammar you use can make something mean nothing...) It's not that i don't care, it's juz that i can't blame them if it has come to this point. Well, you would have to pity them for sinking until this level... by that i mean blaming the DL-ers for causing them to have poor sales... They've started to point fingers at people who will browse through their products and have a higher possibility of helping them in bringing up their sales results. I can count using less than 10 fingers how many people around me bother to watch anime or just sit down with me to watch one episode... not to mention going for cosplay conventions or even just going into a bookshop to look at manga. They are forgetting the fact that there are not many anime viewers in SG, almost all of my friends don't even know what Odex was before this stupid thing happened... In the end, all these boils down to the fact that they are suing the DL-ers in SG for money... all of a SUDDEN without warning. Juz as an example, if they got my details of my IP address from my internet service provider and tracked me down... As long as they issue a warning like what they are claiming to do now, i'd gladly comply and stop DL-ing... if i didn't stop and continued to do so, suing me for monetary compensation is the correct thing to do... anywayz, i won't be that stupid to DL anime after they issued the warning... Poor quality stuff they provide plus the lack of on-air anime in free channels is one issue, but what concerns me most would be cash. It's not like i have a lot of spare money to throw around... Factoring in the actions which they took in this saga (getting the IP addresses and suing people) here's a breakdown of what i support and what i don't: Support -------------------- Get IP address from internet service providers Suing people for $$$ after they are warned Don't Support -------------------- Suing people WITHOUT warning Poor quality stuff I'm trying to say that the only thing i mind is the fact which they are doing this too sudden and without any warning... in the end, my points cancel each other out and it becomes my "Neutral" stand in this case. Of course, when i first heard of it i was angry like shit and almost burst a temple... but after cooling down and thinking through things for a while... i can't blame them for the anime they bought and can't produce or air... such things really really don't come cheap, especially in SG... A little off topic example: one small advert in straits times can cost as much as $100 depending on which section you want your ad to be in... not to mention they are trying to get a 30minute show on TV... |

@twilightWizz u make a good point for the most part. the way they reacted to dipping anime sales seems like quite an angry knee-jerk reaction to me. rather childish too, to blame everyone but themselves for this whole thing (although singaporeans CAN be quite cheapskate at times haha). as a sublicensee, they should take responsibility for their product quality and availability and only have themselves to blame if anime viewers are unsatisfied and decide to look for alternatives online. but i feel quite a lot of pity for them too...sometimes i think they should just close down and restart again. it's pretty sad sometimes to see companies on the verge of going bust...the people in there are, after all, fellow regular singaporeans like us. i can see what u mean by the support/don't support thing; sadly some of these things come together at the moment. if they can sue people after warning i'm quite sure they'd go back to poor quality stuff as well. what i don't really agree with, though, is that suing people for $$$ after warning is the correct thing to do. in any case, when they announced their intentions on the news, wasn't that like a kind of warning to ALL of us already? maybe their first few cases WERE without warning, but now, we can't really say that there's no warning if we keep downloading, knowing that Odex is tracking us, and suddenly get a letter from them. it's like we know someone's trying to catch us, but we still demand the right to play hide-and-seek with them. a little odd, isn't it? so, to me, even with an EXTRA warning, i wouldn't agree with Odex. next time, they should ensure that they can get those titles and episodes available before they try suing people. UNLESS they can avoid sending letters to people who download stuff that is still unavailable in vcds/dvds. for example, i don't think u can really blame someone for downloading the latest episodes of bleach (which HAS been the case, so far). unlike, say, pop music cds which are available at so many stores and are only leaked on the internet a week before release dates here, for anime we'd have to wait for a year before a small fraction of them get released on vcds/dvds, and new episodes are quite expensive too. other examples would be erm, titles like bust angel OVA, fate/stay night, devil may cry and darker than black. and so many more. how do u get to watch them unless u do something that violates the copyright? even if they did warn me before suing, it wouldn't change the fact that these titles are just nowhere to be found in stores. the full list of licensed anime is here. |

@twilightWizz hmm wait now that i think about it...there would be a scenario where u'd require a warning from odex first. that's if you feign ignorance and say that u haven't heard anything about odex before 'cos u haven't read the news or talked to people, etc. something like that might possibly even be the truth for some people. so i suppose u'd be correct to say that a warning should be sent first. :x |

Lol at that, grecko. I hope they do, since it will be a huge victory for the voodoo magicians around! :) Seriously though, I hope it proves as a wake-up call for ODEX. Not just the voodoo magicians, but all anime fans around SG will rejoice. Maybe they would start giving, at the very least, decent subs. Best would be that their video quality improves too... |

thanks for posting the link here, twilightwizz! :) man but to be honest i think these people're are pushing it a little bit after things've already died down...still, maybe i'd think differently if i was one of those who lost thousands of dollars and didn't even have much cash to begin with. and lost it to a company like Odex just so they'll "forgive" me for past transgressions. and in the end those people who paid the "penalty" might have their names sent to the Japanese studios anyway to get a double whammy, though it's quite unlikely of course (partly because of shu's point). |
