I'm also going to have to agree with all of this. I've really struggled with this show up to around the beginning of this match. Honestly I don't think the show is that great but THIS MATCH was extremely good. Full of tension, finally giving some back story and character building after 20 hours and after all that, just as the show finally finally FINALLY got good, they go and fucking lose.

Sorry it maybe expected that the team you follow wins and all that but I can't excuse this outcome myself. I mean 62 episodes and THIS is the result. They lose to the same team and the same guy as they did the year before. That is just bullshit, it's lame, it's depressing and it sucks.

As someone who does actually follow sports quite actively it's not like I don't understand the realities of how things can play out. But this is fiction, fantasy.

I mean seriously how BADLY paced is this series. Like the next season then is going to add a bunch of new characters and we go through all this buildup again? GREEEEAAAAATTTTT can't wait for that /sarcasm. If they were only ever going to lose than get that part of the show out of the way so we can get to the proper story. I was beginning to love this show but I feel like in this one moment my prior disliking of this series up to around episode 49 was totally justified.

I'm super pissed by this series right now. Surely losing at the Nationals would have been a better outcome for this story but no the asshole Mei gets to go again. As a viewer I'm so pleased /more sarcasm.

... Man I've like super ranted haven't I. Well at least the show got some sort of reaction out of me. Fuck man 62 episodes, I could have rewatched Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and to think the amount of story thats crammed into that compared to this garbage.

Just finished this episode after watching for like 5 hours straight.... once u start an arc/game, you can’t stop watching btw. The ending was devastating but realistic, gna be feels next episode.

Ah, fuck.

I usually don't mind when the main team loses just for the writing sake and keeping it real, but this team totally deserved to win! No way all those third-years won't go to Koshien. So frustrating.

This was an intense game and a lot of pressure but just one out! Seriously, this was such a great chance for Kawakami to shine, so far he was quite bland, to be honest... it was only logical to finish with a perfect pitch from him and win the game. But I guess it's not his fault for not being a main character who's supposed to shine and bring victories.

It was a good game nevertheless, very emotional. And more enjoyable than quarterfinals, that game felt too stretched out, here at least we got to see lots of nice moments or maybe Inashiro is just a bit more interesting for me than Yakushi.

Anyway, gotta keep watching. Actually shouldn't even be surprised at the outcome with how many episode are there still and Koshien is kinda the end goal usually in such anime. Huh.

Exactly. This is bad storytelling. After 6 2 episodes, they lose without at least entering the nationals. HUGE wtf watching episode 62. This happens in haikyuu too, but at least it wasnt 62 episodes. Inashiro lost with mei in his first year too, but inside the nationals. Inashiro team is disgusting and should lose. Seidou already lost to them before and the entire 62 episodes were built around the idea of revenge, school name cleanup, etc... Then the as***les win and everything else falls apart.

Tbh I was watching this with my pessimistic side knowing that they would probably lose because japanese anime writers are cowards and love to follow recipes,but I still had hope that the story would be decent and that i was wrong given the good impression the past episodes gave me.

Unfortunately, I was right and another japanese writer showed to me how predictable he can be. Really disappointed.

What made it bad was how they did it. They added too much character development to make this episode a loss. I'm late I know. But it may be one of the worst episodes just based on the result.

Sure the anime.. quality, production and feels were alluring but the story made it unbearable to watch. I knew they were going to lose as soon as it took 7 mins to pitch. That is what pisses me off the most. Did it do its job yes. Do i love the characters yes. But to throw everything under the bus. Really makes it stupid.

There was no reason to end it so terribly. The point of the last pitcher was to put everyone at ease. But another anime down the drain..

I'am so dissapoint, even if I didn't watch the emission of this anime, I was so emotioned since I start it...
I was truly hopping a glorious win, but it didn't happen, not even that, they made an coward of Sawamura with that end.
I wish he will be able to be the as of the team but not to count with the senpais will be really difficult.

10/10 for the whole show until ep61-62.

The twist ruined the serie, period.

The Mc became the opposite of what is was at the beginning, it's a backward narrative, simply retard and amateurish.

A waste of time. A complete waste of time.

Ps: in every sport anime the MC must lose so he can be stronger after that. This is a strong character becoming weak because the writer forgot to think about the way to make him lose.

I'm f*cking pissed for wasting my time watching this. (u_u)

The seniors are too good to let go this early honestly. I wish Seido actually won, rather than the obvious outcome of losing your first tournament then coming back from it. It would've been okay if Seido lost in the Nationals.

No matter how many times I rewatch this, this episode hurts so bad. As much as I was expecting the loss, I love the third years so so much.
This episode.. and the next 13 episodes are all so painful...

Side note: I cannot understand how the tying hit gets like 100% focus, while the winning hit gets like a 10 seconds slide show? lol~ At least show the battle to the loss, so I can feel that they loss with dignity.

Side side note: There's an OVA on Isashiki POV after this game, it provides like about 15percent of closure for this loss. Watch it after the end of season 2 though.

Probably them winning the Koshien title would have been less emotionally impactful - seeing the heroes who were built up over a season fall (and get up again) was quite something. The way they lost also underlined every important thing connected to the MC (Sawamura) as well: how important the ace is to the team, how even giving your all is not enough sometimes - yet our loveable idiot continues to strive on -, how there is always another fight coming up (win or lose this one), how experience counts, how green the first years still are and so on and on.

Also, love how even Mei is affected by the fact that Inashiro actually won.

That's true! :) I also feel that the retiring of the seniors after such a defeat gives good direction to the upcoming team.

Yes, Sawamura certainly is the one (and probably only) character that is always "busy" with all those issues/situations that the creator threw at him~ I do enjoy "seeing" him develop and grow (though I don't think the creator did a great job in showing us how Sawamura overcame his problems, these storylines are usually implicit with little focus, felt like I only ever got to see him getting into bad situations, then after some dialogues and focus on Furuya, he got out of the situation) , but the lack of development for the other characters are by contrast jarring. The psychological wall and lose of the Ace number for Furuya is really a long overdue character development~ I mean 100 over episodes of focus on Furuya without giving him any character development and just some depth from some dialogues literally hurts me~ Hahhaha, since I do love Furuya too~ LOL~

Oh, and the first name addressing of Sawamura, I seem to have a slightly different take on it:
Well I kind of relate to Furuya a lot, in particular his behaviour, given my character and personality trait (literally the quiet kid in the back of the class). I think the first name basis is pretty common for Japanese when they are the same age. And Furuya ever only have to interact with the senpais and Kominato (Haruichi) and Sawamura~ I am expecting him to address Kominato by first name too when he opens up more. So, I do actually think that is impactful he addresses Sawamura, not because he uses the first name, but because he actually uses his name.
This is probably going to sound ridiculous, but I was once in a class that I knew absolutely no one (New school, new classmates, new curriculum, new everything). It was my firsttime being in such a foreign situation, and given how I was, I actually interacted with my classmates without addressing them by name. It was just like how Furuya interacts with Sawamura and Kominato, I just go up to them to talk/ask them about things (keeping the conversation short), I hardly initiate conversations, and I tag along them for lunch and breaks. *Feels like Furuya is based off me...* hahahha~ I actually like the people, but I just can't open up enough to even address them by name. Well, to cut the story shorter, I eventually took a year or so to open up and begin addressing some of them (the slightly closer ones) by their names when I wanted to interact with them.
So for me, it feels more like Furuya is willing to take their friendship/ rivalry a step more intimate/ closer. And the fact the he said it out loud is a sign that he is consciously aware of Sawamura's impact on him. I have always thought that he respected and is inspired by Sawamura since the beginning, like how he follows Sawamura to run WITH a tyre~ But given how he is also an airhead, he could have just being unaware of his views on Sawamura.

Well yea just a slightly different POV here. hahah~

Anyway~ I really want Kawakami to get some well-deserved pitcher focus~

Yea, it is indeed a long drawn out development, and I am starving for the next season.... Want to see Sawamura shine brighter than the Sun in Summer Koshien~

Also I love how Haruich is able to replicate Ryousuke menacing look after he cut his hair~

I somewhat disagree with your take on Sawamura's development - I feel like it's pretty consistent on how he deals with crises from the time that he almost managed to shed his career as pitcher way back in episodes 3-5, through the first intrasquad game, the yips arc and fear of Todoroki, finally failing spectacularly as ace in his first try in Act II. He falls down, there is a crises where he really has to come through for the team and his own sake, he jumps into it with his indomitable spirit, then gets a pointer or two from Chris, Miyuki or Coach Kataoka and overcomes it in a great moment. Btw, Terajima really likes characters to have "all or nothing" growth moments on the battlefield (the diamond). What alters I think is that he gets the experience and emotional maturity that his junior high career really really didn't predispose him to get (see the difference between the first time he is taken off the mound in S1 against when the same happens in Act II).

I feel that the format really constrains Daiya. I mean, it's what, a ~ 20 page weekly manga? Add to it the shounen and sport parts, and the focus will naturally be on the games, it basically lives or dies on how interesting the individual battles are. Also that we basically have Sawamura's POW (Daiya no A) and the other characters mostly get one point of development in a short scene or dropped comment / arc (or if you really want to focus on the salient points, season). Like with Haruichi: arc 1 (~ first 25 episodes) introduction to team, arc 2 (~ up to Inashiro game) some details on his relationship with Ryousuke, rest of season: going at it again to avenge his and his brothers' loss, S2 arc 1 (~ first half) growing into a regular on team, arc 2 (~ rest of season) coming out of Ryousuke's shadow. Act II first half: becoming self-assertive and feeling like a 2nd year, Act II second half: looking ahead to being a senior and leading with plays and beyond. This might be too reductionist and maybe even incorrect on some specifics but I really feel that every character has that kind of rythm. [just to insert it here: yeah, the mighty Kominato genes are showing there!].

Your points on Furuya is probably valid, and very illuminating too! I must say I didn't consider from that point of view up until now, just vaguely felt that Furuya saw Sawamura as truly akin to himself at this point, and that he gained a new level of understanding after he had his own slump like Sawamura had multiple times. It always buffled me that after he had been shown as having been left over by his peers in junior high for being way above their level (making probably that he didn't participate in high profile tournaments, especially as winner either), that he was so good at batting got the hang of fielding quickly, even though he probably didn't have that much more experience, than Sawamura who only begins to hit the ball in Act II. My personal take is that Terajima took the lazy way and used Furuya - and usually others as well - to juxtapose Sawamura (as in: if Furuya was not super OP, the clear ace favourite after Tanba left, then Sawamura would have been too competitive as the hero not to be ace, and the author just wanted to prolong that). I get it that this is Sawamura's story mainly, but there are titles, like SnK (Attack on Titan), that shifts agency around its characters way better, without losing its focus on its themes. Probably the saving grace is that the individuals mesh into a team really well, I see everyone's point of being there and they all have distinctive enough personalities to carry the show. This weakpoint gets more salient as the time passes though (like how Ochiai is basically just a prop in Act II after being the "villain" in Season 2).

That being said, like you, I'm still really hooked and looking forward to seeing my favourite team go forward. ^^

....that was heartbreaking to see... I kinda want to punch the umpire for saying Safe instead of Out there even if he's right. I feel bad for Kawakami as he was the only pitcher left to replace Eijun, the latter who sadly now feels some immense guilt for indirectly causing Seido's loss.

Not surprised but also not disappointed. I like the third years but if they made nationals while Sawamura was a 1st year I feel like this would just end from there, the main goal has been accomplished. The development of the third years and backstories are necessary so you actually care about them. If we didn't have that you wouldn't feel invested in them winning or losing. Also we get more development with the first and second years (going to be second and third years) for more tournaments until the next Summer so we have so much time.

I think the worst part of Seidou losing isn't them losing, but Inashiro winning. That annoying arrogant asshole doesn't deserve to win, even if he's indeed skilled.

Actually, Inashiro has been the only team so far where I just couldn't end up liking its team members, they all just feel too full of themselves.

Oh good lord... a fielding error by Haruichi my boi, not really an error cause that was a nice catch but the throw was too... weak. Kuramochi was too flustered he forgot to throw the ball back home right away (and again there was that delay). Every millisecond counts. And they messed up big time. Ryou-san's injury came to bite them on this most crucial moment of the game. My heart breaks... my boys had a lot of regrets.

I hate Inashiro. :') I like Masa-san and I respect that annoying Mei but I just don't like their team. But they were strong. Gosh, lemme cry for the third time. I wanted the third years to advance to Koshien. Why did I watch this series for the 3rd time again? Only to cry? T_T
