I learned English very early as I played a lot of MapleStory when I was at a very young age.
I picked Chinese as my 3rd language to learn in school, however the class got pulled 'cause too few students chose it and the class would have gotten too small. So Spanish was assigned to me.

I was introduced into other languages early on, I was around 3 when I first started learning English and Spanish. I was also taught french by my mom. She is also multi-lingual so she taught me the languages she knows. In school I had german classes but I already knew german from my mom.

In fact all languages I know come from my mom, dealing with people from several different nationalities and a little influence from school also.

If you want to learn any kind of language you always have to start with the basics, from the simple hello to the most complex and well structured phrases. IT will take time but start with the basics, basic phrases, grammar, names of objects, popular expressions, simple phrases to get you on the right track. I would say that if you really dedicate yourself in around 4-6 months you can speak french at a near fluent level and maintain conversations. You could also learn french in a school or ask for private lessons, if you can't do that search for help around the internet, there's tons of "guides" around.

I grew up speaking Cantonese and English, I don't know which one I learnt first.
I went to Chinese (Mandarin) school for years but I didn't learn anything and eventually stopped.

I'm only fluent in English(Like everybody in my area.)

I have studied a little bit of Russian, Italian, Japanese, and Esperanto, but I am not fluent, nor can I even conduct a conversation in any of them, and I can't get any help because there's nobody except monolingual English speakers where I live.

I've been trying to learn French and German mostly. I tried tagging on Irish too. I was thinking of others like Russian and Old Norse or something. I dont know enough i could consider myself bilingual yet.

Been using Duolingo and it seems to work for me just fine to learn some things.

By this websites i'm learning japanese with people who's learning english or spanish. If you are trying to study a language by yourself, this is a nice way.
In my country, for example (Argentina) you have public schools with free language courses (Italian, French, English).

English is my native language, but I also speak fluent Spanish. I don't speak any other languages fluently, but I've studied many languages and writing systems over the years. I Just never stuck with any long enough to become fluent (well, I can read and write in Korean, but that's pretty worthless considering I never learned much of the *spoken* language, lol). I studied Spanish, French, and German in school. I studied hieroglyphs as a hobby for years, but only remember some of the basic alphabet, and dabbled in Arabic when my dream was to become an Egypologist. I can only remember how to write my name in Arabic XD . I studied runes when I was studying Wicca, and tried to study Celtic and Gaelic but it was too hard to study on my own without assistance for pronunciation. I can only remember one verse of a Gaelic song, and that's it.

I was also an English Second Language teacher for a few years when I lived in Latin America. I can give you a few tips. I don't remember much French, but I was good at it when I took it and won 1st regionally and 11th nationally on the National French Contest. To me, it was very similar to Spanish. As it's your native tongue, you may not see it as easily.

So a few things... everyone learns languages differently. Some people have a natural talent. While I love languages, I have to really study them to pick up any decent amount. My husband, however, speaks amazing English without ever having studied it a day in his life. He doesn't even care about languages. He learned from music, customers (he spent a lot of time at his grandparents' house in a VERY touristic town), anime that wasn't available in spanish, and video games. Some people pick up a language pretty well like that. Some people REALLY don't do well in classes. On the other hand, some people need one on one help to really learn a language, and others do very well in classes.

Try a few different ways. If you struggle one way, move on to the other. Personally, I found my students learned best when they really immersed themselves in the language. We'd have class, but the ones who picked up on it faster were the ones that listened to me and listened to English music, or watched more movies without subs/dubs in their native language. I'd have them find music they really liked, and we'd go over the lyrics in class so they could fully understand it. Then they'd try to learn those songs by heart, and I'd correct their pronunciation.

But if you want to get your foot in the door, there are some great websites that you can go find with lessons, worksheets, and tests all for free. I'd highly suggest you find a website with audio files so that you get the pronunciation right from the start. You'll fall into habits as you study any language, and if you pronounce things wrong for so much time, it will become more difficult to correct.

I'm like the worst bi-lingual in the world. Fluent at English, shit at Cantonese. I can understand Cantonese semi-fluently. Speaking? Worse than a 3 year old. Also learning Mandarin which I can speak better than Cantonese at this point, but I don't understand as much. So kinda almost tri-lingual I suppose?
