This is a topic i wanted to discuss for some time. But i think i may be the only one on the planet who hates these things, anyone else feel the same way? I also realize this is a anime site, and i'm fairly certain almost all anime watchers love AMVs. I'm probably alone :(

I hate them for several reasons, the people creating them think their the most creative people in the world, when all they do is link a bunch of random clips together and then add music like death metal. Yeah, your really creative. Add the fact that most of the people respond to these videos like the creators have done something truely amazing-- worthy of worship.. it just adds to my hate.

Whenever i voice my opinion on these videos i get attacked by a posse of AMV fanatics or have my comments deleted by the author who can't take negative feedback as hes the most creative person in the world of course. But i guess i'm a bit biased to be commenting on random AMVs, the mass majority of them are horrible though. Some are almost tolerable for me.

When i'm searching for a very specific TV or anime clip on sites like youtube, i have to rephrase my search quite a few times because a bazillion crappy AMVs pop up, and i still end up wading through shit tons of them to find what i wanted. Annoying and adds to my hatred.

So, is it wrong of me to hate AMVs? Does anyone hate them as much as i do? Is this threads responses only going to be flaming me because all anime watchers are AMV fanatics? Is someone going to attempt to convert/brainwash me into the AMV religion?

Not every AMV is the same. Some are really outstanding and more than just pasting random clips together and slapping music on them.

Oh yes, to answer your question, no I don't.

This is the first time I heard about this so as I stated before your own personal opinion no valid grounds I might add

If you don't like them......why do you watch them until the end and comment? Or wait a second you comment on them without watching the whole amw and of course you offer feedback without watching it

yep you have summed up all AMVs you see on youtube. and all the kids who listen to this are bad at making AMV. See the strong correlation? You are not the first to figure out.

So basically you dont hate AMV's, you hate the people that make them...

IMO alot of AMV's suck. But ONLY because I dislike the song or audio. Not everyone likes the same kind of music. I think the one thing that gets under my skin with AMV's is the people that line (or try to) the lyrics of a song so it looks like the character is singing the song.

AMV's are great for finding new songs that you may have never heard of before.

And to answer your question... Ya, your probably alone...

EDIT:

I might add that if you add "-AMV" into the search bar it will exclude anything with AMV in the title.

Depends, I have two AMV's made by Nostromo on my computer. They are high quality and pretty good actually. As for the rest of the AMV's, yes, they suck completely.

If you want to list 80% of all AMV's on YouTube, simply search "bleach in the end" (that is, Bleach the anime, and the song 'In the end').

Hm...I don't really watch that many "AMVs", I watch more of the AMV Hell sort of stuff (as well as make those kinds of videos).

I have to agree though, that some AMVs are absolute eyesores, for example:

- The ones with the subtitles still on the video.
- Redundant music (IN THE END, IT DOESN'T REALLY MAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTUUUUUUUU-URURURRRRRRRRRR!)
- Too many effects
- Too LITTLE effects
- Forgetting to modify the sound and you can hear the original audio in the background
- THE NARUTO ONES, MY GOD.
- etc. etc.

It's pretty much a hit/miss when it comes to AMVs, but the good ones I enjoy.

I hate those things too. I do not watch anime online but I have sometimes weed through that shit trying to find real music videos just because some douche bag anime fan decided to make and AMV and some other douche bags decided to just upload a video with just the audio. I think the video with just the audio is more annoying because if I just wanted to listen to just audio then I wouldn't go to youtube in the first place.

I find most of them pretty crappy, but I have seen some exceptional works, so I can't condemn the entire practice, even in a great deal of it is crappy Linkin Park songs with Sasuke or the likes.

Also a lot of people don't know how to use DVD source and/or obtain raws, and leave subs in. Or crush 16:9 video to 4:3 instead of cropping it, etc. Really, really common to see idiotic mistakes like this, even with "experienced" creators. I could forgive people the first time or maybe two at a stretch, but when they say like "this is my 11th AMV, wat do u think?" and it still has subs in the video or something, yeah, just give up already.

Really, I don't -hate- AMVs, or the creation of them in principle, but I do find the vast majority of AMV creators very distasteful, so I can fully understand the hate as a whole.

I only hate AMV's when i'm trying to look for a certain scene in an anime on youtube and i get spammed with AMV's as search results.

Overall though, I love AMV's. They can be pretty creative and amusing. They're low budget: pretty much anyone can make them, but there's plenty of fun to be had with the interpretation of both the song's lyrics (or music) along with the visuals from the Anime.

Obviously -- you haven't seen the ones where people actually did put work into these videos -- other than simple random pasting of clips glued to music.

Plenty utilize visual effects. Random anime clips -- in mini-windows. A flurry of color and text. And a whole mess of other stuff people can actually do creatively with these things.

And yes. I hate the 99% of AMVs that are random clips with music behind them. Any dumbass can make those.

Anything that isn't in sync with the audio doesn't count as an AMV in my books. It's like fanfiction to a novel. I just think you've been intoxicated by all the crap that you rarely see the gems. A good AMV incorperates the lyrics by either lip syncing it to the anime or follow the "story" of the song through the visuals. Hell this stuff is on par with the Anime Opening/Closing videos.

Winners or even Finalists of "AMV" contests at the major conventions, like Anime Expo, especially the more creative works. The competitive aspect puts entrees into a higher standard.

Now, about the random clips glued to music -- even this style CAN be done well -- just as long as the purpose is filled, like the reason for using certain clips at certain times are obvious. Yea, I managed to rethink about a couple that fit the "random" category but aren't actually that bad.

Personally, I'm not a fan of AMV's. I'll admit that some are high quality, but that's just like anything. You'll have your low quality and then you'll have a few who are talented.

I just don't like the idea of an AMV. I watch TV shows, anime, movies, etc because they contain a story. An AMV, to me, doesn't contain a story. It's clips from an anime (or multiple animes) with some music added. Now sure it's not that simple, but I don't think AMV's add anything.

To me, it's like a music video. I enjoy music, but I find music video's pointless. A lot of them don't even have anything to do with the song, though I'll admit some are good like Serj Tankian's Empty Wall's.

I don't have anything against AMV's or people who make/watch AMV's. People have different likes and dislikes.

If you wanna see good music videos look at some of the stuff More then Toast does. Some videos actually can be considered Art. Like I've seen ones where this guy edited cowboy bebop and trigun together to make it look like Spike was hunting Vash. It was really good. Another I saw was gundams attacked Nerve in evangelion, he did it mostly in photo shop frame by frame and it came out amazing.

If done right, AMVs can get really creative. If you take the time to actually plan it out and put it together, it can become extremely amazing. There's a reason different AMVs get different ratings. Some are just bad and some are really amazing and well put together.

So they took clips from an anime. Oh well. Doesn't make it bad and not creative. It's actually alot harder than you would think to take clips together, add effects, etc..and make it look good. Let's not forget that some go above and beyond and take it into programs such as After Effects and add a wide variety of effects that are absolutley gorgous.

Oh yea. Let's address that part:

There's a difference between praising and giving compliments -- vs -- false praise to avoid hurting someone's feelings.

In fact, you can see this pattern in the fanfiction and fanart circles. I don't even write fanfiction or draw my own fanart, yet I'm aware of this kind of behavior. These are the kind of people who likely do their own set of "work" just to get praised. At the same time, they do not want to be criticized (you suck) or critiqued (you can do this and this better). Anyone who can't handle that has no business making anything.

If anything, withholding critique or criticism to anyone is a disservice. It prevents them from actually getting better or from having the motivation to become better. I'm not saying that it is good to "discourage". Give credit where credit is due, after all. If you critique or criticize with the intent of helping someone, that's fine.

By the way, I got criticized for my posting style around here. Well, to that...

As somewhat hinted before, there is absolutely nothing wrong with AMVs in general, and no real reason to hate all of them based on a single segment, no matter how prevalent that segment is. While it's still subjective, gross generalizations do not make an effective argument for anything. That's just being discriminatory.
In the end, AMVs are like any other media. More than likely, you will dislike far more of what's out there than you will like, so it simply becomes an issue of sifting through.

That being said, there is indeed an issue of improved technology making it easier to create and "market" AMVs, thus allowing legions of fans who would otherwise never get to square one to churn out something and distribute it. That's life, and it's not unusual. It happened with fandubs too, and I've seen the same phenomenon with low-budget films - now video store shelves are flooded with abysmal DVR releases that wouldn't rate MST3K treatment, when it used to be relatively easy to find something at least passably entertaining. That's all just one more price of progress.

In the old days, it required a great deal of knowledge, and even specialized equipment, to create an AMV - the concept and practice have existed since the VHS era. People would often spend weeks working on a single project, making sure to get things just right. The product thus became a display of skill and talent, and, of course, became competitive. And for those who dislike the "junk" on sites like youtube, you need only look in the places where these old-school creators have historically prevailed, and the degree of competitiveness found among such technical achievers remains. Conventions are a good example of this. You can also go to sites like animemusicvideos.org, which are more specialized and have several features to make finding a jem that much easier. While a minority even here, you will still almost certainly find a very large number of AMVs worth watching.

As for the flood of AMVs in youtube crowding out what you want to look for, there are several search tricks to filter them out with a significant level of success. I've never had significant problems, even when I was looking for a specific AMV. After all, I don't search for DBZ/Naruto to Linkin Park.

Just off the top of my head (and solely using youtube), I can bring out a decent-sized list of AMVs I like, though in every case, I admit I found it elsewhere and DLed a much higher quality version. Some of these directed me to artists and songs I'd never know otherwise, and a few, like the Angelic Layer and Noir ones, introduced me to a series.

OP, I see where you're coming from. Terrible mediocre AMVs are a dime a dozen. There's nothing I hate more than a friend telling me "WHAT THIS IT'S SO CUTE, YOU'RE GONNA LIKE IT~" when it's a badly strung together sequence of scenes that doesn't even sync with the music. >.> Plus subtitles. Plus non-coherent.

There are however some good AMVs out there. :3 I don't wanna link them all so I'll just link my favourite.

A good example of this is Whisper Of The Beast by Scorpions ULTD. It's a AMV winner from long ago.

Which took the effects part to the next level and beyond IMO. Thought there's plenty of other examples here... I just especially love this one.
