like berserk - Monster- cowboy bebop......

Are we going to act like if Cowboy Bebop is for adults when a lot of kids watched Bebop?

You have a point. But i personally think there's a pretty decent amount of mature shows nowadays, it's a matter of searching. The right amount of mature anime for the right amount of people out there who actually likes them.

I would argue most animes nowadays are targeted toward more of an adult audience. Even many shonen/shoujo now often have content that one could argue is for an adult audience. In terms of theme, I think a strong portion of modern anime compete with "adult" shows in the west.

Ah my bad.

I'm talking in general
People think cartoons are for kids and that is universal, japan is probably the place with the least people with that thinking though.

There's plenty of anime for adults -- all those latenight moe/ecchi/loli/harem/high school/in-joke/slice-of-life anime are aimed at the core consumer base for anime, Japanese otaku ages ~18-35. They are aimed at adults, just at Japanese adults with different tastes, values, and life trajectories than many adult Western anime fans. SRSDeep/GrimDerp/2Mature4U stuff hasn't done too well financially ever since the Western fanbase largely stopped buying anime and decided to let Japanese otaku subsidize their anime consumption. Now everyone's all surprised that the anime that gets made skews towards Japanese otaku tastes.

I don't think this is true as many western cartoons are watched by adults.
But we're on MyAnimeList here, not MyWesternCartoonList, so the rules of Japanese society apply. And since all the "normals" over there still associate "otaku" with "some deranged serial killer from 27 years ago," you can be seriously ostracized and suffer diminished to nonexistent employment and romantic opportunities if the wrong people find out about your hobby.

Well they make a huge amount of them, they broadcast them even in prime times, in almost every major channel.
They have build an industry around them.
And manga are really common, more common than any other form of comic anywhere in the world
So it woudn't be weird for many people to not think that its for kids.

There are less adult anime viewers than teenagers and companies only exist to make as much money as they can, which is why average moeshit/fanservice releases dominate every season

If we are talking about actual adults and not manchildren, with how stressful the Japanese society is most probably don't have time for anime and anime aimed at them don't sell well. There are plenty of manga for adults. Read them.

If by adult you mean non-pandering and mature themes it's because studios are only interested in what sells.

Well, there's at least 5 this season, probably more that I'm not watching, I wouldn't call that lacking.

Most adults buy anime, they just happen to buy the really bad ones. So yeah, you don't fit in the demographic.

There are anime that are targeted towards adults, you just need to look a bit harder for them. It's also the fact that anime that are targeted to children and teenagers just tend to make more money, so companies focus on those more.

Yep, Akame ga Kill!, Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, The Fruit of Grisaia, Parasyte: The Maxim, and Psycho Pass 2 all carry R ratings here. You're watching all of them....

I guess it depends on your definition, there are two seinen manga adaptations this season so that's kinda cool.

in japan the whole 'otaku' affiliation is generally seen as negative, and there is a lot of manga for adults, but still not very popular i guess. and in western society, there is an even smaller audience, so i guess an adult being seen watching something like that is viewed as negative.. yeah..?

because adults actually have to think about where their money goes. they choose actual needs over entertainment, unlike teens who use their parents' money however they want ie. drugs or in this case, buy anime merchandise

If you need recommendations, just ask around.

But "adult" is a very vague category. There are shows that barely qualify, and shows that are quite excessive.

Anyways, my working definition is, if it were a live action movie/TV series, would it be rated R (though there may be some exceptions)?

Anime doesn't have to be dark to be mature. Why are people thinking that?

It has to have more maturer themes instead of just blood, gore, violence, ecchi, grimdark and 'people die when they are killled'.

This OP is basically just saying "why is there a lack of anime catering to my tastes"?

I don't see any lack of anime marketed "for adults". Most of them are just like many in this thread have pointed out. In fact, Death Note is considered shounen and was serialized in shounen jump, and it has some pretty mature themes in it which any adult can enjoy. Get off your high horse and open your eyes.

It's all about the money. Younger demographics have more time to spend on entertainment. That said, I find that there is more than enough great mature anime.
