New to MAL so I hope this topic is in the right forum. If not, I apologize. Anyways, I am in no way bashing the show, I just want to know why it is rated so highly. What makes this show special for you? Maybe you can give me a new perspective on it. My problem with it was all of the fight scenes seemed repetitive in the way team gurren won. This made less interested in the outcome of every battle because more or less, I knew how it would be resolved. What do you guys think?

It was an edgy new mecha that appealed to fans of every genre. It had style, fanservice, and refreshing characters.

I'm not sure what you're looking for here but it goes without saying the protagonist usually wins in an Anime. This is no different.

Idk. People loved the stupid over the top nonsense and illogicality of it all, but I didn't.

For me at least all I can say is it that it was just fucking awesome, and I rated it highly because of the sheer enjoyment that I got from it. It's one of those things that is just good because it is, the characters may not be the most fleshed out and the story may not be that deep but neither of those seem to take away from the show. Why? I couldn't really tell you and I don't feel like spending a lot of time thinking about it.

Because knowing how it would be resolved and still being awesome makes it even more awesome.

Of course you are right, the hero usually wins in anime and that is fine. However I feel that usually, the victory is justified with logic and if not these shows do not tend to be the highest rated. I felt in Gurren Lagan, they always won because they "kicked logic to the curb". Again, I enjoyed this show a lot so I am not bashing it. Just want to know if anyone else agreed or what they have to say.

Because it serviced a generation of Western tween and teen boys who needed motivation in their lives with loud speeches and huge robots.

that is oversimplifying things OP, its not all about the battles, gurren lagann also has great memorable dialogues and scenes that are motivational and will get you excited , music is great, the animation and art style are unique, its story starts from the simple wish to get out of the caves and escalates and escalates to galactic and universal level of threat, the character ages so well too that is rare for a lot of anime, they started as teenagers and then at the end become old people

if you only see the battles as the focus of gurren lagann then i can understand how you think its repetitive and bad

I think some of the appeal actually comes in the fact that it had no pretense of logical battles and constantly drilled in the fact it was kicking logic to the curb. The show was exactly what it made itself out to be, and in the perspective of the masses didn't try to be something it wasn't. Of course Kamina and the hokey speeches made up most of the fanbase anyway.

Simon's character development was the most enjoyable aspect of the series for me.

I didn't really care too much for the rest of it

Enjoying illogical over-the-top nonsense is a thing that exists.

Though the second movie is dear to me and I prefer it over the series because it cut out some less than impressive parts (basically the first half of the series) but still kept the galaxy throwing, and like xDarkrai said- that is all I ever wanted.

Gurren Lagann is the only anime I watched so far where I disliked every single character in it.
Even Leeron Littner ? That's quite surprising since you're both faggots sophisticated.

-great fights
-fantastic music
-likeable characters (for me)
-great ost
-one of the few series where being so god damn cheesy actually works and makes the whole thing even better
-the series is a celebration of everything over the top in anime
-it has one of the best god damn finale ever

It's literally the only over the top show that keeps topping itself. Even jojo doesn't get this over the top. The ending was phenomenal. It's one of the few animes with a good compilation movie
