THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
If she didn't come back at all, that probably would've been by my account the most tragic episode ever, although there are so many sad ones.

To be honest, I was expecting her to return but in a Jumanji "look I've aged" kind of way... I guess this works too ;D

Why are there five options in the poll? There should only be one.

Yeah, but I figure few people write opening posts for near every episode in a series (especially one with no one else posting), so I guess I was kind of asking for it :P

Very good episode.
So the older sister didn't age a day, and completely forgot everything (it seemed like it), but I'm glad she managed to reach home.

great episode, but im not sure if i understand correctly:

the younger sister put a letter in multiple cocoons, hoping that the uro-san of that cocooon was connected to her sister, and therefore sending it to her?

Arghh! I'm a bit confused. It was not said what time it is when Ito came back? Is her sister still alive and kicking? and still on the same age or in that time where Ginko guided him in the Uroan? Arghh! I think this episode is not complete. I just get the part about those kind of Mushis, but the story of the 2 sisters didn't make it to my understanding. Or am I just missing some thing? Can someone just answer the questions I have? LOL!

^___^

oh yeah fair point. i kinda assumed it was around the same time ginko showed aya the tunnels. but being mushi-shi and all it couldv'e been years later. sorry babykeiji im just as lost lol

another thing i liked about this episode was seeing how ginko knows where to go to see people about their mushi problems..when he said he had mail and looked up i was expecting to see a bird or something..the cocoon caught me off guard a bit lol

Happy endings have been few and far between. It was nice to see this story end nicely. Even if Ito now has no memories of her sister or their childhood together.

Awww that was sweet. ><.... They got to see each other again! =D.... But I wonder where the letter came from. I think it was from the cocoons that Aya put letters in right? I think ><

I wonder if Aya still expected Ito's homecoming after she saw the Uro-Ana...well on the other thought..it have to be so...otherwise, the letter wouldn't arrive..? *takes a second look on the letter she's carrying* not affected by time or anything else...almost good as new...

conclusion: Aya never gave up hope AND is still alive as Ito returns...

btw would be nice to get your mail on this way =)

Great episode, as usual. I don't see how some people who responded to this thread didn't get the timeline of the story. The narrator specifically said "years later (after shown event), a girl came out of a cocoon" or something to that effect.

"You've got mail" was what a strange voice in my head said when I saw Ginko picking up his vibrating cocoon.
I was surprised that there were actually mushi with a practical use as well, although they don't lack danger, and that the mushishi seem to be using them frequently.

one of my favs
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

Maybe since she was so young when she came out she was on "mushi time", so it wasn't so many years for her?

the cocoons were beautiful and -- oh -- so fragile and scaring
buti couldn't understand what's going on since Ginko and Aya went to the caves

This episode wasn't as sad as you all say, but still, story in itself is rather beautifull.
Ending was... Well, let's say full of hope.

Exactly what I was thinking as well. ^^

Tbh I got a little confused with this ep, I think I might watch it again tomorrow. Either way it was a great ep, I really wanted to see the reaction of the sis!!

Hmmm I only understood the ending after reading this poll... Yay!! Niiiice.

But... since the girl had not aged, the letter didn't age with her... I hope Aya was alive when Ito went home... But, since she didn't remembered anything... It's sad anyway... Well, at least she's back ^^

If it's that easy to get taken by the uro-san, and you're not supposed to ever close/open doors, why even have them in the first place? Or maybe just a front door for when you're away from the building for awhile. I found this mushi to be one of the most interesting so far though. Great reaction by the old woman at the end of the episode too.

Not always true, it depends on the mushi's lifespan.

Think I missed something in the end. Did the girl end up in her childhood house or somewhere totaly random...? Anyhow I think it was a good ending. :)

The narrator says it was "a few years."

Real neat episode, was pretty tragic even with the somewhat "happy" ending. Even from the moment the kids were taken from their family it became a sad story.

I'm repeating this all over again but this is just so brilliant.

The Mushi mail system is really fascinating though it was something harmful.

The story of the girls was so tragic but the ending was unexpectedly funny due to the

old woman's reaction yet it gave of some sense of happiness and hope.

Once again, a life-fulfilling episode. :D

One of the most beautiful episodes I’ve ever seen.

It was truly a remarkable and unexpected epilogue; the prospect of having another disheartening ending was almost assured, but it was set aside, made a wonderful, touching and hopeful finale. I’m torn between wanting to see Aya’s reaction, or staying as it is now, implied, leaving us with our faith and imagination.
I think, then procrastinate.
Therefore, I am.

Aya's age was mentioned I believe. If I can recall correctly Ginko said to her "It's been five years" so that would make her fifteen?

I was totally freaked out when Ito got taken away. It was like a horrific magic trick. The Ora(?) looked lke little baby sting rays. xP

Re-watching Mushishi and gotta say this episode is just so powerful.

The girls were forced into a dangerous situation and then Aya had no one to blame but herself, and no one to comfort her.

Perfect show for a nice Fall evening.

... I'm still waiting for Ginko's modern clothes to be explained, or at least someone commenting on them. Like he forces the Mushi to open a portal into the future where he does his shopping... or something.

I think I would have liked it better if Ito came out after Aya was really old or died or something, even if that would be like a billion times more depressing. Well written episode either way.
