Exactly the opposite of escaping it.

I read it because it's the epitome of a light-hearted, cute series.

Haha, you got a little too philosophical with that question. I'm sure every one just read this manga to experience a masterful coming of age tale.

I read it out of curiosity, but finished it because of my ability to relate to the feels

I personally find this work to be a masterpiece and the emotions it convey are far too human to ignore.

To escape. But then Punpun comes around at the end and shows us all that there is no escaping life.

I get the feeling that you've read translations for a couple of interviews with Asano.

I did read some, but this thing of "escape reality or to fight" is something I found first on the manga.
According to Asano, he just wanted to imply that nothing goes on Punpun's way (the ending).

I read it simply because it's an amazing manga tale.

At first, with most manga and anime, the art really caught my eye. It's very graphically pleasing and the idea that the main character is a simply drawn bird (or doodled), drew me in even more.

This type of story is tremendous and extremely saddening. It really reminds the reader of how life is. Whether they are in a world of fantasy or not; it still reverts to something we all know. there really is no escaping reality and this story hits hard!
