I don't know if this is a troll but I'm going to make a comment anyway so here it goes: Filler referce to anime episodes that have almost no character development and aren't relevant to the story. A lot of people hate these episodes because they just want to go further with the story itself.

"Filler" in anime, are the episodes of an anime series that do not have anything to do with the main story or plot. They are simply episodes to either reiterate certain things or so the producers can throw something that could potentially be enjoyable for the audience.

Examples:
Romance anime about a male protag and female protag. The female has a problem and the male proceeds to help her in finding the solution to her problem, but randomly somewhere in the middle of the anime there is an episode of them either in the beach not having anything to do with the girls problem, or the episode is basically a recap of some past episode(s).

Fillers are non canon episodes which are used to help the manga go more ahead of the anime.

Their story can be created by the author, but most of times the anime studio makes them.

Most of the time it sucks, but it can be enjoyable.

Fillers are non canon (they ain't part of original story) episodes or part of the episode. But it's not necessary bad.

Filler doesn't have one set definition, but my definition isn't only episodes that stray from the main plot. If the episode has worth by whatever means and isn't simply a comic-relief episode, than I don't consider it filler. I consider filler an episode that feels of less quality and effort than normal episodes while also being completely meaningless in the continuation of the story in any way (not just by following the plot).

One of the purpose of filler in anime is to give time for the manga, if adapted and still ongoing, to get further, so the anime doesn't proceed pass the manga. This can be seen in Fairy Tail and Naruto (correct me if I'm wrong). But in other case like Fullmetal Alchemist (not Brotherhood), the anime went beyond the manga as the manga didn't finished yet at that time, and they didn't made much fillers, so the anime made its own story independently from the original manga.

Filler is an episode that is used when the anime is catching up to the manga. It is not written by the author of the manga, nor is it important to the main story.
It is like a side story that either you watch it or not makes no difference.

It is used so that the manga has some time to produce new material to be adapted.

Well, if we'll be totally honest, pretty much everything that isn't in manga should be considered filler, even if it's adaptation of story from manga - colors, voices, movements that weren't drawn in manga...

Personally, I prefer main story, but I never minded fillers too much because it often gave more screen time to some characters who seemed interesting to me, but weren't included too much in the main story.

If it's a good director, filler parts of the main story can often be better than its manga version.

In other words, they're anime-original episodes, that didn't occur in the source material (non-canon). They don't progress the plot, and are usually inferior in quality compared to canon episodes, but they're not always bad. They can range from being an entire episode, several episodes long (a filler arc, like the Bount arc in Bleach), a few minutes of an episode, half an episode, or they can be semi-filler (like the final 2 episodes of Shingeki no Kyojin).

some say its anything not from the manga- relevant to the plot or not.

I say it is an episode where the plot nor characters are developed in any way. regardless of if it was In the manga.

the previous is based on the logic that every anime is based on a manga, which is not the case.

Fillers are Boku No Pico episodes which you need to watch to understand the progressing plot in the future of say Naruto, One Piece, KHR, Bleach and Fairytail.

It's actually not that bad though so I recommend it like everybody else.

Isn't detective Conan a episodic show? You know where a small story begins at the start of the episode and ends in the same episode.

well general there are two types of filler

1. anime orginal episodes/arcs of an adaptation that are not present in the manga

2. some people consider episodes that do not progress the plot as filler

Like the others said, an episode that doesn't progress the plot or doesn't have anything to do with the main plot at all.

Kyoukai no Kanata's ep6 is a sterling example of this.

Well Naruto (not Shippuden) is actually 42% filler. The rest is legit.

Content or characters invented for an anime version that wasn't in the manga/LN/other source material. Not "material that I don't like because it isn't interesting or action-packed enough."

It depends on your interpretation. I consider it any footage in an anime that is based off of a source material that does not appear in the source material. You could argue that it's anything that stops the flow of the plot even if it's in the source material, but I don't.
