i wonder how smoking can keep mushi away?

I think he discussed that in the first episode...remember the smoke binding the mushi "ghost"? Also another ep (can't recall which at the moment) he talked about how he's always attracted mushi and how the smoke helps keep them away.

Character development in progress. This episode is amazing for showing the progress of the characters and their interactions with people similar to themselves

One of my favorite episodes. The ending with Kuchinawa was really cool and totally unexpected. More so because the largest and perhaps most powerful Mushi is also the one with the least info.

Not just the kids, but all the one-shot characters are pretty similar. All the young men have dark hair and a goatee/5 oclock shadow, for example.

Yeah. The faces are kinda similar but it's not important though.

Again, another wonderful episode.

We got 2 and half Mushishi's in this ep. :)

Mujika's backstory was kinda sad :(

I don't how to say this but a different Ginko here is really great.

About the smoking thing, I just realized it and find it interesting :D

Kuchinawa being at the mountain peak is just a magnificent view.

So I guess we know why Ginka is always smoking (although I guessed it was for that reason). That kuchinawa at the end looked amazing too.

Fantastic. I felt something was slightly distinct with this episode; I don’t know how to explain it, but it certainly felt so to me.

I’m impressed at how character development can be included in such a subtle way, but still be noticeable enough to acknowledge the changes. Ginko showed more of himself this episode; they way he acted when the Master was calling for the Kuchinawa to leave it his place… It was different from the Ginko we’ve seen before. Probably reminded him of his past experiences, maybe before becoming a Mushi-shi. And the fact he solely smokes to prevent attracting Mushi reveals simply how selfless he truly is.

The Kuchinawa at the peak of the mountain is surely one of the most grandiose sights I’ve ever witnessed.

Pretty cool episode. With the Masters of the mountain and how Ginko acted differently.

Awesome ending too.

Pretty good episode.. But am I the only one here who wishes that Kuchinawa was a dragon?

Each episode is just so good. except all the little kids look like they're the same character, its a little frustrating.

i hadnt picked up on the smoking thing though.. thats pretty funny :P

haha yeah i have noticed all the kids look the same.
the smoking thing is interesting to =]

I second both remarks... I guess I'm slow on the uptake when it comes to subtleties like the smoking habit. I like how subtle the creator is, though, in including that. Makes the whole series seem even more well-thought out.

Yes... the kids do all look the same. .___. Only downside. Some of the guys that Ginko runs into tend to look the same, too. I guess there's only so far you can go with adhering to reality (Japanese people usually having black hair and dark eyes) and making anime characters look different.

yeah, the characters look very similar, but that applies to all cultures, ya know...

But I get to hear awesome child voices!!! So it doesn't matter to me. XD

nice episode.

Loved the episode, one question though, what was with the hole in the mountain at the beginning?

Why did the master want to sacrifice himself anyways? I never understood that. Did he think that he could not handle the role of guardian? Or did he think his role would disrupt the growth of vegetation? Or was it related somehow to the girl who killed the boar?

Exactly my question.

The hole in the mountain was visible, not only to Ginko, but to regular people too and after a few seconds it disappeared. If anyone understood that part, I would appreciate a reply with the answer.

And one other thing that confused me is related to Ginko's fear for the villagers. I mean, sure the Mushi-Shi Mujika taught Kodama everything he needed for survival, but apparently the villagers are in danger from Kuchinawa. Ginko said it himself, Kuchinawa couldn't care less about humans (although it looks like a majestic being, I see it as an evil beast which could destroy the village if provoked in any way).

This episode was confusing and left a lot of unanswered questions... Unless I just wasn't paying enough attention. I was wondering why he had to sacrifice himself too. Was he just getting too old and weak to fend off Mushi? And (who I assume is, since it's only implied) his wife killed the previous Kuchinawa or Master to get him to stay?

And as someone mentioned before, the hole was also still left sort of a mystery.
