Like there's one sad song that has a deep meaning in your life. Some shit that happened to you is connected to that song so every time you hear that song, your inner emo protrudes out.

No, I'm not talking about just that one song. I'm talking about sad songs in general. Even if you can't relate to them. How do you feel when you listen them? like you've never been in a relationship but there's this one sad song about a relationship ending, will that song make you feel sad? you're imagining someone else's story while listening to it and that instantly makes you go all emo. Or you just start imagining your future self and that makes you sad.

Sad songs easily make me sad. I just start imagining someone else if I can't relate. I blame my vivid imagination.

So what's your way of getting into the mood of the song?

For tl;dr fellas:
Are you an emo?
[i]"Yet each man kills the thing he loves,
By each let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword!''

Depends. Some songs make me feel sad because they trigger an emotion that I had when I listened to it before, or just because of the lyrics.

It kind of determines the genre. Some sad songs make me feel sad but only if its digging up actual emotions of personal things usually. Sometimes sad songs make me feel better if i am sad.

Nah, I don't really empathize with the lyrics of the song even though it is relatable. At most, I'll just feel melancholy :| or nostalgic.

sad lyrics can touch a chord

there are some terribly melancholic melodies, but they don't really make me sad

Yeah the Hungarian suicide song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEbXnWbwjLQ

The myth is that people kill themselves because of that song, and it is fairly depressing.

Other than that dido - white flag. I love that song, but it can make me feel a bit sad.

Its not really the lyrics for me. Just the melody or tone of their voice.

Don't really listen to songs,
But just about any slow paced piano piece can put me in a pretty melancholy mood.

Sad songs can make me sad. It usually has nothing to do with the lyrics but more the feelings and emotions that are conveyed through the melodies.

They make me sad, but not "Clannad: After Story" sad...

A few songs I consider to be pretty sad are "Hurt" by Johnny Cash, "Tears In Heaven" by Eric Clapton, "Everybody Hurts" by R.E.M, and "Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead.

I think it depends on the lyrics
Like the melodies and the tune of the song could be touching but if you add funny exciting lyrics it can change the whole mood of the song.
But I guess if you add sad lyrics to a happy, jumpy song it won't seem that sad.. You might not even be able to hear the lyrics...

Stan by Eminem feat. Dido can really get to me sometimes. He did a really good job conveying the emotions within the song. The music video does the song great justice, in my opinion.

There's even a Dango Daikazoku version. I really like mashups, kay? :U

And then there's Who Wants to Live Forever by Queen. Gosh, listening to it and just knowing that Freddie's not alive anymore is just... wow. For some reason it just means so much more, as if someone's coming back from the dead just to sing a song about death and what forever even means.

Ich bin der Welt by Gustav Mahler, sang by Janet Baker (who has a wonderful mastery over her voice), is amazing to hear. The song is so beautiful that it made me tear up a little the first time I heard it. Not too many bells and whistles from the composing and the singer. Really great.
I had the pleasure of hearing this song performed in front of me just in a beginning voice class which had been combined with a more advanced class. One of the more advanced male singers sang it and I just couldn't stop myself from crying. Wow.

I feel like if you can feel the emotions in the song, it has a greater power over you. Maybe.
Though, I wonder if this should be in the Music and Entertainment board or...?
