Oda Nobuna no Yabou made me refresh my memory of Oda Nobunaga and his conquest of Japan. Other than that, no, not really.

When I watch Aria I sometimes Google the Venetian sightseeing spots they mention in the anime to see if they really resembled one another. Kinda fun. :3

Not sure about historical things or stuff like that, but I have learnt a lot about japanese culture. For example the game called Shogi (first saw in Naruto), their traditional clothing called kimono and stuff similiar to that.

Oh! Edo Rocket presents some events like the Osaka riots that made me dust off my Asian history textbooks.

I spent some time reading the history of the Sengoku period when first watching Hyouge Mono. For the Japanese a story about Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi would be like me watching a show about George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, though without the swords and assassinations of course. For a gaijin like me, I needed to do some historical research first.

I read Tale of Genji while watching Genji Monogatari Sennenki.

Showa Monogatari does the research for you. At the end of every episode, they provide a brief travelogue that visits the actual places depicted in the anime both in 1964, when the story takes place, and again in 2011.

Psycho-Pass got me to look up a bunch of literary figures.

Upotte got me to look up the information on various rifles.

The Daughter of Twenty Faces got me to look up Edogawa Ranpo and various stuff featuring Sherlock Holmes.

Bartender got me to read up on cocktails.

Stuff like Haruhi Suzumiya, Aria, and Hanasaku Iroha got me to check out their real-life locations by online photos.

...Huh, this happens a lot more than I realized.

Anime wise, I think I started reading more on Japan's history after Ninja Scroll (the movie) and Rurouni Kenshin. The greatest treat for everything however is still Gintama.

Manga - Lone Wolf and Cub, enough said.

Saint Seiya made me look for greek mitology.
Rurouni Kenshin for japanese history.
Samurai 7 for the Akira Kurosawa film by the same name.
Shaman King for more legends and history.
