I got really into street fighter 4 and to lesser extent 3 and now I'm just confused. I wondered who the hell oni was so i looked it up and I was just bombarded with terms and character events that never seemed to happen and now I want to know how the story goes but I don't know where to start. Am I supposed to read something or watch something or play the games on higher difficulties or what?

You don't. I think nobody besides the crazy Japanese developers actually know what is going on with the plot

Watching the Street Fighter Assassin's Fist web series might give you a good idea about the main character backstories.

Street fighter does have a lot of story but it is mostly fragmented. Not that it matters since the point is to pick characters and fight since it is a fighting game.

ArcSys can't write plot for their fighting games at all.

Street Fighter's story is none existent. It's like the call of duty of fighters

If you care for the story, just read the wiki or go for the anime/manga. Barely any of it appears in the games.

I love my Street Fighter, but I hardly follow it for the plot. I do own most of the anime and the manga, but a lot of it branches in different directions and some are one offs that don't really tie in.

If you want a fighting game with a story to follow, play King of Fighters.

I'm not looking for a fighting game with a plot. I'm wondering how the hell any story details are in the wiki when there doesn't seem to be any info to draw from. I love street fighter. I grew up with Street Fighter II on the snes because my parents were cheap and I broke our modded ps1 and we didn't get a ps2 til 2005

Street Fighter is dead to me now. I use to play it religiously until I saw the trailer for Mortal Kombat X.

Street Fighter hardly has a plot, and it's a good thing too. Blazblue tried that shit and it's so convoluted it hardly even makes sense.

No offence to Blazblue though, because it's like the best fighting game out there, but that story man, what a piece of shit.

From official guides?

SF's story is pretty simple anyway. They don't put as much effort into it as compared to Mortal Kombat, KoF, or even Tekken. At least they tried, I love to see an ending scene every time I finish an arcade mode of a fighting game although SF is probably the worst when it comes to it.

Just watch that Street Fighter Assassins Fist movie. I think that's pretty much the whole plot. Or atleast the somewhat interesting part of it.

Fun fact: Cody is actually godlike. I think he was actually as strong as Akuma.

Assassin's Fist just chronicles the early years much like Street Fighter Alpha and Alpha: Generations did. Don't get me wrong, I loved it. I was hype ever since they did the Street Fighter Legacy short film, but it's nothing new really.

I think the writers lost track of how many things they've retconned. 'Sup Bison.

It's really Mortal Kombat that has a comparatively good story going for it. Well, MK9 and prolly X at least.

There is a plot there...sorta. But its basically just a bunch of mini ending seniors you gotta piece together, nothing more. Heck I been playing Street Fighter since the very first obscure arcade edition back in the 80's, and even I don't really know much about the connections in the storyline.

Afaik the only fighting games with a decent story are Persona 4 Arena and Blazblue. Don't bother with other fighting games plots because really those are nothing but a bunch of pretext for the sake of the characters kicking each other's butt. Just like porn, except it's "kicking" and not "fucking".

The story is kind of out there as of right now.

Oni is actually very easy to explain though. It's essentially just Akuma letting go of the last of his humanity, becoming Oni which is essentially kind of like him becoming 'evil' itself. This usually happens after he takes off his prayer beads which

This DOES happen within the plot, but of course Gouken is so ingrained into the game even with the past events he'll continue to be a playable character.

The rest of the plot is as said, just a bunch of strange endings mixed in, but I believe they do have some sort of manga that illustrates it better. I think the only characters with a solid plot funny enough came from a different game. Cody, Poison, Hugo, etc. came from Final Fight and I've got to say for a 2D side-scrolling beat em up game the plot has a lot more going on for it. Needless to say though, the transition to Street Fighter has made their storyline a bit dull, but they've got to be the more 'exciting' ones from the bunch.

TL;DR, Street Fighter focuses more on fighting than the actual plot. They play around with story loosely, so it comes out to be more confusing in more cases than it should.
Touch me, you filthy casual~

Just watch the Street Fighter movie from 1994 starring Van Damme and everything will make sense.
