[Spoilers] If Clannad After Story would have ended at episode 21

At which episode do you think After Story should have ended?

We are arguing with a friend to know whether or not episode 22 was necessary.
I believe that yes and he says no.
He says "A drama isn't supposed to have an happy end"
But I feel like this end is really what makes this anime so beautiful.
What do you guys think?

Kind of true and kind of false. For a show to kill off two main characters and then revive them is kind of an asspull and forces the happy ending at the viewer which I think was a bad move. Some drama have happy endings like Itazura na Kiss which was very suitable considering all of the mishaps between the relationship. I think Clannad AS's positives were that it went into the tragedy zone.

episode 22 was necessary.

it connected the "illusion world" with the real world while completing the theme of family. it even gave season 1 reason for being there.

The other world sequences wouldn't have been needed in the first place if they just ended at 21. Depressing, but a very good ending. As much as I enjoyed seeing everything work out in the end, it felt out of place and quite ridiculous.

Like superhero x being sucked into a black hole and travelling to another dimensions instead of dying

Partially episode 22. Only partially. Ending it at

Ushio's death

would have been far too tragic, even if it meant for it being a more respectful ending than the one it has now. A better ending would be

where Tomoya reunites and hugs Nagisa on the hill saying he regrets ever saying that he wished he never her.

Just ending it there would have been perfect. Then we wouldn't have needed that sudden cop-out.
