Pleading suspect dies in police custody: 'You can breathe just fine'

Chief Charlie Beck has declined comment on the death of a suspect determined to be due to asthma.

From the moment Los Angeles police handcuffed him, Jorge Azucena told officers he needed help.

"I can't breathe, I can't breathe," he pleaded. "I have asthma, I have asthma."

In the half-hour or so after his arrest late one night last September, Azucena said over and over that he was struggling for breath. Numerous LAPD officers and sergeants heard his pleas for medical attention but ignored them even as his condition visibly worsened.

"You can breathe just fine," one sergeant told him. "You can talk, so you can breathe."

Azucena could not walk or stand by the time officers brought him to a South Los Angeles police station for booking. So they carried him into a cell, leaving him lying face-down on the floor. He was soon unconscious. When paramedics arrived shortly after, Azucena's heart had stopped.

"You can talk, so you can breathe."
At some point, people need to understand the air may be getting into the main wind pipe, which is why we may speak, but it is NOT getting into the smaller air pipes and alveoli. This is why we say we can't breathe, sure it's going past our vocal chords, but not very far into our lungs.

Ignorant cop.

Be a cop for 10 years, once you've heard every excuse in the book you too will no longer give a fuck.

Being an asthmatic, I support this proposal.
It's natural for a person to deny he's a failure as a human being. That's why he searches for somebody who is more miserable than himself. That's why so much animosity exists on the internet. Those who aren't able to find a more miserable person, turn to the internet and call other people losers, even though they've never met. Just to make themselves feel superior. Isn't that pathetic? There's a sense of security that comes from speaking badly of someone else. But that isn't true salvation. — Tatsuhiro Satou

That's how it works. They might have had something happen if the guy was white though.

Since this is the LAPD, I totally agree.

So, the fire department shouldn't respond to a fire alarm anymore if that same alarm has been malfunctioning several times in the past? What if it's working right for a change and the FD not showing up means the building burns down?

Or how about paramedics sitting on their asses when a guy, who pranked them 9 times about having a heart attack, actually has one, thinking it's just another prank?

IMO, no police officer should be this callous by at least not checking as to whether or not the guy was right, because in this case, he was actually right and they left him to die, even though they had all the means necessary to prevent that from happening.

The inner social Darwinist in me is saying 'so what, the guy was a criminal'. If he had a prior medical condition that could be triggered by stress, why the hell did he think getting into a pursuit was a great idea?

You fail to understand the point. The point isn't to ban the government. The point is that the well-being of the average citizen is inversely proportionate to the power of the government. As the power of the police grows, so do the abuses.

Don't ban the police. Just reign them in. Don't ban the government. Just neuter it.
