It will have been 25 years prior to tomorrow or today, depending on your time zone. That Voyager 2 made it's encounter with the neptunian system. Being the first and only probe to have visited the gas planet, along with Uranus. It captured and transmitted us info that broadened our view and understanding of the planet(s). On this day at this very moment the space probe New Horizons will be hurtling toward Pluto and crossing Neptune's orbit, signifying this 25th year anniversary event.

The probe launched 19 January 2006 from Cape Canaveral. Launched directly into an Earth and solar escape trajectory with an Earth relative velocity of about 16.26 km/s (58,536 km/h; 36,373 mph), it set the record for the highest velocity of a human made object from Earth. Traveling close to a decade now it's current position is 29.55 AU from earth with a heliocentric velocity of 14.69 km/s (52,884 km/h; 32,860 mph). AU being Astronomical Unit or the distance from the earth to the sun.(about 150 million km, or 93 million miles) Converted from AU, New Horizons has covered roughly 4.4 billion kilometers or 2.7 billion miles!

Closing in on it's target Pluto it should arrive around July of next year. NASA will be having two events to discuss New Horizons mission and it's connection to the Voyager spacecraft. 1-3 p.m. EDT airing live on NASA TV which I'll give a link to. 1-2 p.m. event will feature a panel discussion. 2-3 p.m. event will include several New Horizons science team members giving personal accounts of their work during the Voyager Neptune encounter and their new assignments on the Pluto mission.

Excited?Curious?Questions? Share them along with your opinion if you have one.

This is interesting indeed, we have very little knowledge regarding the outer bodies. Although I would not hope too much about pluto, it seems like a giant dead rock unlike few of the Jovian satellites. I'm more interested in the space volcanoes and geysers thing. ;)

While true it mainly seems like a dead rock, we'll be able to learn more about it and possibly get a better clue of it's origin. Space volcanoes and geysers are quite cool =P.
