I thought it was going to go to credits right after they failed to catch the girl in the net...

Ending was still just fine though.

I think maybe this series resonates with me the way it doesn't quite others, because I find myself teary eyed at some point during almost every episode so far. This episode was beautiful as well, especially the narrator's final words as the episode closed.

Gosh, this series is amazing, but I think I can only take it in small doses.

I think DalPuri describes this episode best:

DalPuri said:
The convo between Ginko and Adashino in this episode is a real treat. Looks like Ginko has some friends after all.

It's interesting to see how closely bonded the girl was with the swamp. I think part of it came from being "rescued" by the Suiko after being sacrificed by her family and village... but she still fears her own death, unable to die with the swamp and ending up living near the place where it died.

I thought this episode's story was probably the least interesting so far, but it had its moments. I liked how they showed some continuity with the reference to the first episode, and it was cool to find out how Ginko gets by (that is, selling the memorabilia to the doctor).

people are missing the point by saying "the mushi weren't bad this episode". mushi are neither bad nor good. they just are.

anyway, i totally thought this was going to be another sad episode, but the girl was saved :D

and they tied in the other episodes! i was beiginning to think this series was going to be completely episodic, so that was a nice touch :P

Overall, decent-ish episode. Calm and peaceful.

Decent enough episode. Actually one of my fave things about this show is watching where Ginko travels. I don't know if it sounds weird, I can't really explain it.

Nice monocle Ginko's friend has.

At least we didn't get back to back episodes of people he tried to help dying on him. One thing they didn't go into detail was how she went from a jelly state to her normal, solid form. Did Ginko do something to help her return to normal or was it really that simple of a solution? (just waiting it out).

Oh, interesting story again. And I am liking the girl. Adashino as well.

Ginko got a bit regretful there a bit. Glad the girl turned out to be alive.
Her sacrifice brought fish in the town. She became the legend she was promised to be. So beautiful.
And man, I want to sink into the scenery of this show.

This show's main theme is definitely teaching its viewers the importance of living, to learn to move on. Brilliant episode.

Aww. Ginko is sharp. I was worried she might get mad at him for saving her when she wanted to be one with the swamp but deep down, she wasn't ready to die. Good work agan, Gin! ;D

That episode made me kinda uncomfortable where when you drank a water from the swamp then you'll dissolve or dry off or something. But the way the swamp Mushi travels across the mountain then it dies when it reaches the sea then they able to save the girl from dying though she looks like a jelly at first was awesome imho. Haha.

At least we get to save the girl with the help of people.

Ginko's facial expressions, though. Hahahaha!

this is a very old topic but i couldn't help to get bothered by the unsatisfied replies about this episode.

it's clearly about a person who stopped living, meaning they are conformed with death - a state related to depression. the good side of the story: this person finds a reason to live again. somehow, the mushi of this episode was capable to help the girl find her reason. she relied her poor life on that entity, but in the end, she found her very own happiness because of that.

mushishi is a gem and i love to watch something that makes me think how beautiful it is to be alive.

Western bias coming through: Io is supposed to change into a cow, not become part of a swamp. Also Arethusa blablabla, lol.

Transformations, river gods, All mythology and folklore seems to come from the same wellspring. That feeling is reaffirmed when I watch this.

The Travelling Swamp had led a long life in the span of its existence throughout 10000 years and Io successfully tagged along at the very last second. She was given another chance at life when she was saved at the time she was used as a sacrificial maiden but she had to be one with the swamp as the price. It had left its mark in the world by welcoming a new generation of swamps and she had experienced something no other person would fully understand.

Ginko being more serious about saving her from being trapped in the slowly maddening state of living between life and death and having others help him out is nice to see once in a while.

Felt like this episode lacked substance, it was just missing something, something important. So, the girl didn't die the first time, she was in fact, saved by the green-swamp-alike.

One of the episodes that I adore most: in it there is comedy, poignant, dramatic moments and the charisma of the protagonist Ginko, who recognizes what the girl covertly confesses to him, in their brief chat; moreover, another very amusing character is introduced.

Jesus christ thats horrid what they did to the girl before she got swamped. A sacrifice because of beliefs, religious or not, is such a waste of life. Tradition (more like peer-pressure from your dead ancestors) is a messed up thing, people thinking sacrificing a human to some "higher-up" will solve a problem are a lost cause.
On a happier note, it's not everyday you see a girl emerge from a swamp but tis a good thing the girl survived in the end with a third(?????) chance of life.
yep these storys are bloody amazing at hitting you with that hook-line-then-sinker effects

What an absolute gem, this episode. I'm surprised I completely forgot this episode (then again, its been 9 years since I watched the show).
The girl was sacrificed by one family, only to be adopted by a new family. I love how she said that she now wanted to live independently at the village by the sea. A'int that the dream, sister. A'int that the dream.

And my brother Ginko was so on his feet in this episode. He knew he was racing against time and really wanted to save this girl. I love how they brought up the first episode and the story to show the change in Ginko's thought process and approach to this problem. Wonderful writing. The music, art, sound, everything...oh my God. I love this show so much.

Adashino and Ginko interactions are such a treat. More to come in future episodes and I'm looking forward to experiencing that again.

10/5
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

Either the episode had its moments that were confusing or I'm stupid, but since the comments are about my opinion, it was an episode I didn't like. I wasn't captivated by what was presented regarding the girl in the lake, but I understand and admire Ginko's concern for her. He didn't want the girl to have the same end as Shinra's grandmother (a character introduced in the first episode), where she would stop being human.

The first two episodes were fantastic, something out of this world. Meanwhile, the third one was good, but not like the previous two. The fourth and fifth ones have declined significantly.
