I'm totally shocked there isn't already a discussion topic for "Key the Metal Idol". I've just finished episode 7 of 15 and am already getting blown away by the visionary camera story telling.

I was hooked from the get-go by the sure-footed story telling. We're oriented immediately in this re-telling of the Pinochio story: cute wooden-looking robot created by kind grandfather inventor whose dream is to make her human. But the rays of Disney sunshine go dark fast in this smart anime: the storage units in Grandfather's rural tatami laboratory contain the remains of dozens of failed attempts. The walls are lined with soulless mannequins, heads bowed, blank stares focused on the middle distance.

It's presented more subtly than this, of course, the darker shades masked by Key's kawai and the floppy-boob fan service of her side kick _____[name?]_______. I shouldn't talk as if I'd recognized all these thematics early on. The layered intertextuality comes to you in a rush around Ep. 3 or 4. Once the accretion of backstory piles up, the homages hit you like a brick: you suddenly recall Alien Resurrection and the zoo of grotesque botched Ripley clones; . . . . . . [finish this later]
