It's been awhile since I watched the show, but I think the whole Spike-Julia-Vicious love triangle is actually the main plot arc. Everything revolves around Spike's past and his "destiny" if you will. It's the same basic story as the Lion King. Spike is Simba, who doesn't want to accept the burden of becoming the new ruler of the pride/mob, so he runs away and lives a carefree life doing other things... but eventually he has to come back and clean up the mess he left behind... namely killing the villain. The moral of the story is that you can't escape your destiny. Even though Spike dies, it was his job as the rightful heir, to defeat his rival, Vicious. The love triangle involving Julia just brings the grandness of the story down to a more personal level. Maybe Spike still doesn't care about the future of the organization, and maybe he doesn't care if Vicious corrupts everything and takes over. But he still has the responsibility of fighting Vicious for Julia's sake. He has to "man up" and fight for his "princess" etc.... Anyway, that's the jist of it from what I can tell. Bebop is a very layered show. |
