| Title, I know some that learned Japanese in college mainly for watching animes asap. Is it stupid or worth considering? |

| Japanese is a pain to learn from scratch. Don't bother if you don't have enough free time and willpower. People are giving up on Japanese before even remembering the Hiragana and Katakana tables. |

| It's a lame reason to learn a language for!-_- why I'd read it in Japanese when I can read it in English/Arabic(my native language). It's really great to read raw manga/watch raw anime but to learn such a complicated language for that ? nah thank you. I'd only learn Japanese to date a cute Japanese girl with little tiny body from the elementary school. I started really learning Japanese as long as other language ( I'm fond of learning languages BTW), I know Hirigana, Katakana, a few Kanji (isn't enough at all) and some grammar. 5 minutes per day for Japanese isn't a big deal at all. |

| I would only learn it to broaden business options but I don't see that coming at all in my foreseeable future so nah. Learning it for the sole purpose of making my secret hobby a tiny bit easier would be ridiculous. |

| Learning Japanese gets very tedious I'll tell you that. Sure, grammar and their syllabary can be fairly straightforward, but trying to grasp on the concepts of Kanji-pronunciations and context-dependent usages can be extremely difficult. As you watch more and more animes your brain starts to build up semantics for those sounds with the aid of visuals. So if you watch enough animes, eventually you can understand 80%, 90% of them. Then it's fair game to watch without subtitles. (Unless the piece you're watching has many unusual or made-up words) Thus IMO I don't think I would learn it just to understand raw. |

| If I was to learn Japanese, I would actually have to need it for something. The Japanese they use in Anime is what most Japanese would call "retard-Japanese" anyway. So hopefully no one's actually learning from Anime. |

| Who's to judge people's motivation behind learning a new language? If someone finds learning Japanese wortwhile for the sole reason of reading raw manga and VNs then more power to them. Learning a new language would have benefits anyway regardless of their initial motivation, and they're actually being productive by learning a new skill. It's ridiculously stupid to criticize someone for learning a language for whatever reason. |

| Absolutely. I'm currently around 200 Kanji learned. I read/watch so much stuff originating from Japan I find it to be worth it. It's a lot of work though. You really want to have a good reason for learning another language before you do so, purely because of the time and commitment involved. I think I would enjoy learning many more languages someday. |

| I've often felt the desire/really wanted to, but I try to be a realist and just know that even if I somehow did master it enough to become fluent(which I don't exactly have confidence is something I could accomplish) if I didn't speak it or hear it frequently everyday I'd just forget it overtime anyway. Plus just learning it for that one reason, which is definitely the only reason I'd wanna, doesn't really seem strong enough of a reason to attempt it. |

For the people who wants to learn Japanese for the soul purpose of dating a Japanese woman, Heed my warning : If you think asian women are submissive, cute, and kindhearted well you have been watching to much anime they're almost like "tsundere" (I'm not saying all but mostly) You should see my mother smack me with a hot pan when I told her I forgot to pass my homework. |

| lol this question is shallow. To answer your question though OP, I'd rather go with LN/VN since they are much more in-depth than anime/manga. Truth be told, yes I did start out interested in Japanese b/c of anime. Naive? Maybe, but at least anime has peaked this person's interest. Now 5+ years in learning the language, Japanese has broaden my horizons in general learning and overall view of other cultures. Anime can be the reason in starting, but it will not be your reason in finishing. |
