I'm writing out a story right now and was wondering whether it'd be appropriate to use Japanese honorifics, more specifically words that indicate brother/sister relations, such as onii-chan or aniki.

My story is obviously not japanese, but many of the characters might end up being japanese, and I am endeavoring to right it out with a sort of light novel feel more common in japanese literature (i.e. light novels)

I've already got the plot layed out and some of the story posted on fictionpress, but would it be okay to use such honorifics?

Then why would you have your characters speaking Japanese?

Do they have a legitimate reason to be speaking Japanese? Then yes, if it's context appropriate.

If they don't, and it's just for weeaboo jerking, then don't.

I think it depends on who you would be marketing your story to and where your characters are living.
I own several light novels and many of them use no honorifics at all, mostly because they are translated in the English language where we hey little sis and so on and are marketed to non anime fans. That being said, light novel adaptations of anime or of manga typically preserve the way the characters would speak in the the show as presented to American audiences. A light novel is just a YA novel really to English speakers.

If your characters are not living in Japan do not have them use Honorific period.
